My adult son went to the movies last week and saw 'The Benchwarmers'. It stars: Rob Schneider .... Gus David Spade .... Richie Jon Heder .... Clark Jon Lovitz .... Mel Craig Kilborn .... Jerry Molly Sims .... Liz Tim Meadows .... Wayne Nick Swardson .... Howie Erinn Bartlett .... Salad Girl/Sarah Amaury Nolasco .... Carlos Bill Romanowski .... Karl Sean Salisbury .... Brad Matt Weinberg .... Kyle John Farley .... Swimmer Boy Reggie Jackson .... As Himself
it is produced by Adam Sandler's company. Jon Lovitz plays a multi millionaire (just like in Las Vegas). David Spade in his best role (apart from Dicky Roberts). Very enjoyable with a nice message.
Superman Returns opens nationally in Aus tomorrow (29/06/06)... so excited!
They've said it's going to be good AND besides The Matrix this was the biggest Hollywood blockbuster to be made in Aus so that’s at least a reason on it's own to go see it.
To be honest the trailers haven't really suckered me in but I still wanna go and see what all the hype is about ... I hope it doesn't disappoint!

Oh my looooooooooooooooooooooord! I'm hanging on for dear life to see this movie!
It took me (stupidly) forever to actually see "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" but after hearing all the hype about it and having a boring sunday arvo with nothing to do I finally watched it! From the moment I heard that entrancing ‘yo..ho..yo..ho' I WAS HOOKED!! From the second I saw Johnny.D working the black eyeliner - I was in love!
I caught the teaser for the 2nd a few months ago and FINALLY it’s only a week away from opening!!! (opens the 06/07/06).
If you haven’t yet caught a sneak of what I’m on about – do yourself a favour!!
Just read a review on Rotten Tomatoes about it and it's all good. Can't wait to see it - I hear Keef may turn up in the third but the 2nd and 3rd were shot back to back. Really hope it's not just a rumour.
I've heard that if you haven't seen the original Superman movies with Christopher Reeve then this movie will be confusing for you. Such a shame the Writers decided to do it this way.
I saw it today and you really don't need to see the first two. It's pretty straightforward, over-overlong (2 1/2 hours) and because of that a touch tedious. Kevin Spacey is great as Lex but the poreless chap that plays Superman (Brandon someone) is as dull as dishwater but then Superman was always a bit of a wet blanket. Christopher Reeve is still the definitive Superman. Anyway, that's what I thought of it.
I loved it- probably my fave comic book to film adaptation now(actually seen it twice ). The opening credits with the font similar to the 1978 film was awsome(if you have seen both films you will know what I am talking about).
Johnny Depp has said he will act in as many 'Pirates' movies as they care to make! I love him. My daughter, 29, used to have posters of him all around her room as a teenager. He was in 21 Jump Street at the time. I'm waiting for school holidays to end so I can go to the Cinemas and see this movie.
Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest Sandra Hall, Reviewer July 6, 2006
A blockbuster worth watching for the flair with which the cast plunge into the action. Genre Action, Adventure Run Time 150 minutes Rated PG Country United States Director Gore Verbinski Actors Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgard, Bill Nighy, Jack Davenport, Kevin R. McNally, Jonathan Pryce
LURKING under several million dollars' worth of digital effects in Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean sequel is a sadly missed opportunity.
I'm talking about the film's arch villain, the spectral buccaneer Davy Jones - captain of the ghost ship the Flying Dutchman and Ruler of the Ocean Depths.
Condemned to a waterlogged form of eternal damnation, Captain Jones has been partly transformed into an octopus. His washed-out countenance is encircled by waving arms, and a pulsing membrane has colonised the back of his neck.
It wasn't until the credits rolled that I realised that somewhere within this convincing computer-generated cephalopod was the British comic actor Bill Nighy.
Fans of Nighy's jaded old rock'n'roller from Love Actually will understand how cheated I felt. Special effects buffs won't - which is fine. But they should know what they're missing in having his face hidden.
If ever an actor was equipped to convey the infinite world-weariness you'd expect to find in a member of the undead, he's the one. And worse, we lose the chance of watching his brand of high camp shape up to the equally elevated variety displayed by Johnny Depp's celebrated antihero, Captain Jack Sparrow.
Sparrow, too, is a mistake. The name, I mean. If we're going to stick with the bird analogy, Depp's creation is something between peacock and bowerbird. He has acknowledged Keith Richards as his chief inspiration. Captain Jack's addled grace, his tipsy eye-rolling, his beads, rings, plaitings and piercings are all borrowed from Richards. But the mincing walk is pure drag queen, and the foppishness is less Richards than Jagger. The sense of fun, however, is Depp's own work, and it's still keeping the series afloat.
Despite Nighy's effacement, Pirates is one of the most human of blockbusters, and its crew of supporting players, with their blistered skin, mossy teeth and uncertain command of dry land, are still worth watching for the flair with which they plunge into the action.
The least of the film's attractions - or worries - is the plot. Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman are loosely cobbled together. We also get a spectacular add-on in the form of the kraken, the giant squid of 12th-century Norwegian mythology, which is recruited to play the part of Captain Jones's pet, popping up regularly to embrace a ship and sweep it to the ocean floor.
For Sparrow's ship, the Black Pearl, things are tough. And that's not all. It's also being pursued by the East India Trading Company, depicted as a greedy multinational out to rid the seas of happy-go-lucky freelancers like Jack so it can go on committing its 18th-century version of white-collar crime without interference.
A sneering Tom Hollander is the company officer, and caught in his machinations are the heroic lovers, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Blandness, however, is a far more serious threat to these two. They're still pretty and pretty dull - even though she gets to handle a sword and he's awarded his own subplot.
His estranged father - played by a barnacle-encrusted Stellan Skarsgard - turns up among the Flying Dutchman's crew of lost souls and Will, ever ambitious, decides he's going to liberate him from the undead world.
The computer-generated stuff has a seductively moody sense of solidity. Verbinski ( The Ring, The Mexican) has always had a talent for putting life's shady side on screen, and the Flying Dutchman, with its sinister overlay of seaweed and heavy mildew, is a magnificently gloomy creation. So, too, are the mouldy mermen who make up its crew. And the stunts have the wicked ingenuity of the most exuberant slapstick, with much sword-waving but next to no connection between cold steel and warm flesh.
It's not so much of a tale of derring-do as derring-don't-want-to - especially when it comes to Jack, who is always eager to avoid a fight. This is probably because the effort of remaining upright under the influence of whatever he's just imbibed takes all the physical co-ordination he can muster.
The film's main flaw is its running time. At 21/2 hours it's straining the friendship. And no doubt the next sequel, which has been in part-production alongside this one, will be along soon, packed with yet more computerised miracles.
Rumours that Keith Richards is to appear in the role of Captain Jack's father have been confirmed, so it's to be hoped he doesn't get the Nighy treatment, too.
Keith Richards may star in Pirates film Wednesday Jul 5 06:13 AEST
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards looks set to play Johnny Depp's father in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film, a fitting role for the man upon whom the American actor based his character Jack Sparrow.
"We're all looking forward to the idea of Keith coming in and doing a cameo and it's looking very, very good," Depp told reporters on Tuesday, the day after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man's Chest, the second film in the franchise, had its London premiere.
"The one thing is you just never say it's definite until, for me, the guy steps on the set and the cameras are rolling, but it's certainly something I'd be excited about," the 43-year-old added. Depp won his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Captain Jack in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the first in the lucrative Walt Disney Co series that earned $US654 million ($A882.17 million) in worldwide box office receipts. The movie database IMDb lists Richards in the cast of the third Pirates film due to be released in 2007, although the rocker's London publicist could not be reached for comment.
Richards, 62, is currently preparing to resume touring having suffered a head injury after reportedly falling from a palm tree while on holiday in Fiji.
Orlando Bloom, who stars alongside Depp in the film, referred to the incident on Tuesday, saying he would love to see Richards play the role, before adding: "Well, if he doesn't kill himself falling out of a coconut tree."
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest raked in a lot of doubloons at North American theaters over the weekend, making a record $132 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates.
Walt Disney Co.'s adventure sequel, starring Johnny Depp as the flamboyant Captain Jack Sparrow, surpassed industry expectations of an opening in the $100 million range. The previous three-day record of $115 million was set by Spider-Man in May 2002.
The Pirates haul of $55.5 million during its first day of release on Friday also set a record for single-day sales, beating the $50 million earned on a Thursday in May 2005 by Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
Pirates played strongly across all age groups, Disney said. The studio said people were buying tickets for multiple screenings on the same day.
By contrast, 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl opened with $46.8 million, and ended up with $305 million domestically. Both films were directed by Gore Verbinski. Also returning to the cast were British actors Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. A third film is scheduled for release next year.
As has been the case this summer, there was a wide disconnect between critics and consumers. A New York Times review said the film "batters you with novelty and works so hard to top itself that exhaustion sets in long before the second hour is over."
Superman Returns slipped to No. 2, making $21.9 million in its second weekend and taking the Man of Steel's 12-day tally to $141.7 million. Distributor Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc., said it expected the movie to reach $200 million.
The two film franchises helped the overall box office post higher year-on-year sales for an eighth consecutive weekend, according to tracking firm Exhibitor Relations. The top 12 films earned $206.5 million, the sort of figure usually reached during a four-day holiday.
Rounding out this weekend's top five were Twentieth Century Fox's fashion industry satire The Devil Wears Prada with $15.8 million; Columbia Pictures' Adam Sandler comedy Click with $12 million; and Disney's Pixar-produced cartoon Cars with $10.3 million.
Love his eccentricities, love him. He is sooo clever, underappreciated, and now very French. I'll be off in a week or so to see it. When all the school holidays are finished.

I could of posted this in the Celebrity thread BUT thought since we are on a Johnny Depp bender I would put it here.
The Exotic Appeal of Johnny Depp
It's time to praise Johnny Depp. And examine how he's become such a big star while apparently not wanting it ... at least on the evidence of the roles he's chosen over the years.
Depp has never been as big a star as Tom Cruise (whose role he reputedly turned down in Interview with the Vampire) or Brad Pitt (whose role he turned down in Thelma & Louise).
Until the first Pirates of the Caribbean, he was always one of those actors who didn't seem to crave stardom. Instead of an action flick or a surefire commercial hit, he chose Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man and Sally Potter's The Man Who Cried.
He had a reputation for being a talented maverick who was more interested in being a character actor than a lead.
True, he looked like a star and had a gossip column romantic life with the likes of Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. But his choices - both in his roles and how he played them - always seemed bold.
Sometime bold gets you trouble in Hollywood. Bold can be director Ang Lee making Hulk a grown-up movie.
But when Depp went that way to play Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, he created one of recent cinema's most endearing heroes - a strangely fey, tottering, comical pirate. That role has now paid off in a big way.
The first Pirates took $25.4 million in Australia. The sequel had the biggest opening since the final Star Wars with a very handsome $11.2 million last weekend.
Depp's appeal goes well beyond androgynous good looks and charm. As well as being equally good at romance, comedy and heartfelt drama, he's prepared to risk looking ridiculous and, unlike some Hollywood stars, effeminate to make a character memorable.
So what are Johnny Depp's best performances? Here are my top five ...
5. Cry-Baby (1990) It's hard leaving out Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dead Man, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Finding Neverland, Donnie Brasco, Ed Wood, Blow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and others ... especially for a pretty crappy movie. But Cry-Baby revealed Depp's comic talent and screen presence as juvenile delinquent "Cry-Baby" Walker.
4. Chocolat (2000) Depp shone as the gypsy Roux in this strangely entertaining romance. With what one critic described as a whisky brogue, he had a relaxed charm that won hearts and suited the movie perfectly.
3. Edward Scissorhands (1990) One of Depp's five movies so far with director Tim Burton. What's not to love about his portrayal of a lonely and gentle young man with scissors for fingers?
2. Before Night Falls (2000) Some stars would have run a mile from a supporting role in a drama about a gay Cuban writer. But Depp memorably played both a sexually manipulative prison guard and a tottering transexual with an interesting way of smuggling documents out of prison.
1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) Captain Jack Sparrow earned Depp his first Oscar nomination (his second was for Finding Neverland). The genius was the adventurous decision, especially in a Disney-Jerry Bruckheimer movie based on a theme park ride, to base a pirate captain on rock star Keith Richards.
Why is Johnny Depp so appealling on screen? Do you agree about his five best roles? And do you have a favourite moment from one of his movies? Garry Maddox July 13, 2006 01:16 AM

I didn't/don't see the similarity myself. Johnny, like Michael Jackson, is quite unique and they broke the mold after each of them were created (separately). I don't think Johnny has had ANY surgery whereas I don't think there is anything of the Original Michael Jackson left (on the outside at any rate). heheh
My kids (29 and 21) went to see this movie on Friday. Daughter (29) has loved Johnny Depp since she saw him on 21 Jump Street. She owns many of his movies. She laughed so hard in this movie, she said, more than in the first one. She and my son thought this movie was great.
Does Pirates of the Caribbean deserve all this success?
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has had three terrific weeks at the Australian box office.
Last weekend, its takings reached $28.8 million. Even after a 48 per cent fall from the previous weekend, the action-comedy had a very healthy screen average of $7,600.
That means, in only 18 days, it has ...
* Overtaken the original Pirates of the Caribbean ($25.5 million).
* Overtaken The Da Vinci Code ($27 million) as the highest-grossing movie released this year.
* Blown away Superman Returns ($12.8 million in one more week).
Overseas, the movie has been performing spectacularly.
* In North America, it has grossed $US322 million ($425 million), which makes it the fastest movie to pass $US300 million. That mark took just 16 days. If it reaches $US400 million, which now seems possible, it would be the seventh highest-grossing movie in that market.
* Around the world, it has taken $US543 million ($717 million), which already puts it inside the top 40 all-time grossing movies with plenty of tickets still to sell.
Now that it's been widely seen - selling close to 3 million tickets here - it's time to ask whether the Pirates sequel deserves all this success.
Yes, it's a rip-roaring adventure. As Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp could do with more screen time but is still very appealling. The rolling wheel action sequence is great fun. The visual effects are spectacular. It feels like a cinema experience rather than something we should wait for on DVD.
But now that it's a runaway success, let's step back and compare it with, say, the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Shrek and Spider-Man movies.
Against those standards, the plot of the Pirates sequel is too complicated, it's too long at 150 minutes and director Gore Verbinski could have done more to make the young lovers, played by Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, more appealling this time round.
My least favourite feature is the ending. You might remember the outcry when Back to the Future Part II offered a weak ending that set up the third instalment? Viewers felt cheated.
There is a touch of that in the Pirates sequel, leaving us dangling for the third movie next May.
What the sequel's success shows are two things. Despite the competition from DVDs and piracy, we'll still go to cinemas for a good experience. And there is huge goodwill from the first Pirates. Now that was a great movie.
I found it boring, frankly. I went to see it with our entire year 8 grade, and nearly fell asleep. Number one was so much better, it was actually funny. Johnny Depp looked hot though. =P
Welcome xDeadlyxButt3rflyx, what a mouthful that name is! So Bathurst... how warm is it today? I come from around there originally (Cowra) and lived in Orange for two years. Where I am now is wet and humid. The Sunshine Coast Queensland is not living up to it's name! Welcome to our friendly boards where quite a few people are under eighteen as well as us older members. Cheers Suzi
Hey! Thanks! I have to say, this is an awsome site! I don't know exactly how warm it is today, but it's pretty cold! There's sun, but it's really bad weather! Especially when I have to go to school [not today, though, practicing for my Australia's Got Talent audition]. The last few days have been rainy, too. I wish i lived up in QLD! One word- BEACH! =P.
Hey! Yes, I'm in year 8! I'd love to be in year 10, you're lucky! We have to do Science, Mathematics and PE until year 11. I can't wait to drop them. I hate PE. It's so pointless for me. When am I ever going to need the skills to kick a ball when i want to be a singer? It's freezing here! I have to wear a dressing gown over my clothes through the day at home, even when we have the heating on. It's horrible.

Ohh cool! Nah trust me stay in year 8 it's way easier. I have to pick senior subjects now and I don't even know what I want to be! Oh wow sucked in we chose 2 subjects for yr 9, I picked drama and art.. and in year 10 we picked 8, I did web writers, programming, environmental studies, accelerated science 2 semesters, robotics, who wants to be a millionaire and law. Our year 11/12 subjects are boring though, well the ones that give you an OP are and I need an op to go to uni.. PS- We have to do maths for all of yr 8-12! I'm doind maths a year ahead at the moment but my dad wantsme to do maths c next year as well but I think too boring maths is dull... pps- yea im glad i dropped pe , it was fun though, bludge!
Yes I liked it! I'm not usually a fan of sport related movies, but I was surprised with Benchwamers! Jon Heder is hilarious. Very funny movie. Hope it comes out on DVD soon!
I have to say I really liked Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. And thanks to Channel Seven to refresh my memory of The Curse of the Black Pearl.
After watching the movie, I bought Pirates Remixed - EP from iTunes Music Store. Still love the music

It is amazing how well this film is still doing at the Box Office here In Aust, when you look at Movie Marshal.Com and the figures for the week ending August 06th and the top 10:
After 5 weeks it is still romping in the dollars and almost 34 million in 5 weeks is amazing, long way to go to catch Titanic and Shrek 2 (needs another 24/20 million or so), however it is sill going real well considering those were Christmas Holiday time releases (as was Lord Of The Rings).
Who enjoyed the film "WHAT DREAMS MAY COME" and why? I'm in the US; this is the only chatroom I could find with a non sexual slant. I realize many of you folks are in Australia; hope we can find many things in common to discuss.
Appreciate hearing from you! Robin Williams stars. His wife dies and he goes in search of her. Gorgeous colors and quite a spiritual theme, also many of the afterlife scenes were closely modeled on famous paintings. Another fav. movie of mine is "Fluke", about a man who dies and comes back as a Golden Retriever. Morgan Freeman plays his companion doggie in the film. It has a very loving and important message. On another note, not sure how I feel about this, but I understand that some Brits have made a movie about President Bush being assasinated. "Free speech" and all that, but there are so many sickos in the world I hope no one gets an idea. Also a film about Bobby Kennedy is just coming out. Sad to rehash all that, as I lived through it.
Welcome to eBlah Devantha. I did see a little of the movie you mentioned and actually thought it was weird. Maybe if I sit down and watch the entire movie properly I may have a different opinion. I thought the colours were wonderful in what I did see of the movie. 'Fluke' sounds like fun and everyone loves Morgan Freeman, I am sure. The movie about your president being killed sounds in very poor taste! Are you meaning Bobby Kennedy Jnr with that last sentence? The Kennedy curse and all that! Think he married the wrong woman there. We do make sure our terrific forum stays clean, well mannered and respectful of others. This, to me, is what makes this forum so great. Happy posting Devantha
Hello again! The new film Bobby is about Rbt. Kennedy, Sr. and imagines what might have happened if he had lived. The night he died, my son Matthew was a new born baby. His dad and I were watching TV and had it on when he was shot. I still automatically leak tears when that scene is shown, and don't think I care to see the film. Ditto the World Trade Center movie. Its still too painful. Do you watch much television? Or like to play games on the Internet? Just wondering. A bit about me: I'm the mom and grandma of 6. These days its just me and the cat. I live in a small town in the NW USA. and volunteer at a nearby library. I LOVE books...always say I'm just like a drunk in a bar when it comes to acquiring them. Thats enough about me for now. Appreciate hearing from anyone interested to write. Would be glad to hear about your life (s) Have not been to Australia, but my oldest daughter, a real globe trotter, has, several times. Also I have a friend named Jonathan Isaaks (spelling?) who lives somewhere in your country. He built his own home and is a professor these days. All the best to you Music, Suzi, and Norm from Devantha PS What is a double thread? Will check out the forum---thanks.
Just to clarify, Devantha is in no way related to me
Welcome to the board Devantha, there are alot of terrific people here to chat to.
With the 9/11 anniversary just around the corner, there are alot of documentaries appearing on Australian TV. I don't know about you, but I just can't watch that footage anymore. It's too disturbing and dare I say it - a touch exploitive.
Is American TV doing anything special this year for 9/11, Devantha?
Hello, Devman-I didn't think that you were. My cat sends greetings to all of you down under! Devantha PS How do I add a smilie? I'm new to this computer business!
Devantha, to add a smilie you need to reply to a post by clicking on the 'Create a Reply' button on each post. You can't use smilies by entering your reply on the bottom of the page, which is only for quick replies.
There was an very interesting topic on tellie the other day here about " the falling man" very interesting to here the story and the subsequent follow up.
I had a Para Lt. friend that attended as a first responder - I'm amazed and when she finally talked about it what her first reactions where and the jobs she was dealing with.
On a more personal note it was by shear luck that my Cus. David had to attend a meeting 4 hours before the 2nd plane hit the sth tower. He considers himself lucky but unfortunaley lost the rest of the staff in his office
Hello Alley Cat and Devman! Love the kitty avatar; love my own kitty too. Yes the Twin Towers rehashing is too much, way too soon. So much tragic stuff is always going on and we don't need to be reminded I don't think. So fortunate Alley Cat that your cousin got out when he did. Its time for a good, clean, funny film! I used the love the Monty Python nonsense; might rent a film or two for this weekend. Its our Labor Day 3 day holiday. Hope you have a great day there! What is your average daily temp. this time of year? We are now in the '70's-low '80's F. I live east of the mountains that separate west from east Wa. state. Not near Seattle or the ocean, unfortunately, but in a small town. Well I'm off to pay some bills. Must take care of that. Devantha PS Must feed Nena Fat cat! She's a tuxedo kitty.
Clerks II - Was freakin' brilliant... I laughed so hard I nearly vomited... I couldnt breathe.
You have to see this movie, run, dont walk.. cinema tommorow.
Cant wait for Clerks 3 - Return of the QuickStop (see the movies, you'll get the joke)
-------- Jedi Mind tricks never work on our customers... they work on the weak willed, not the completely stupid..
How you know your girlfriend wants to break up with you... she spikes her own drink so she can meet the Ambo's that rescue her and the cops who come to arrest you. That or she spikes your drink so she can go home with another bloke.
I think they should have renamed this film "Samuel L Jackons: Snakes on a plane" since he's all we ever hear about about when we see a trailer. Im a fan of alot of his films but when I first saw the trailer for this film I thought to myself wtf is he doing? I might give it a go but any signs that I might be waisting my time then I'm bailing halfway through.
I am going to find the time to go and see Garfield 2 this school holiday season. I loved the first one (being a cat lover helps) and I think this new movie looks just as funny. It's a play on Prince and the Pauper; corny probably but corn is good!

Aussie animated film tops US box office Monday Nov 20 10:58 AEDT
Australian director George Miller and his troupe of fluffy tap-dancing penguins have topped the North American box office, knocking off James Bond and sending Borat back to Kazakhstan. Miller's animated musical comedy, Happy Feet, earned an impressive $US42.3 million ($A55.13 million) at US and Canadian cinemas at the weekend to claim the number one spot. It relegated the much-hyped debut of blond James Bond, Daniel Craig, in Casino Royale to number two and ended faux Kazakh journalist Borat's two-week reign as king of the US box office. The coveted first place is a triumph for Miller and the Australian film industry. Happy Feet, made for a reported $US100 million ($A130.34 million), is the first full-length animated feature film produced in Australia. It features characters voiced by Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, the late Steve Irwin, Anthony LaPaglia, Hugo Weaving and Magda Szubanski. US film critics loved the film and reactions from audiences at early screenings pointed to a big US opening. "People tell me kids were dancing in the cinema and there was lots of laughter," Miller, who has been in the US the past few weeks promoting Happy Feet, told AAP. "I've also been told there's a lot of feeling and emotion in the movie. "That's what you are always aiming for." The large opening and positive critical reviews will also confirm Sydney-based special effects house, Animal Logic, as a new force in the animation world. Happy Feet is set in Antarctica and follows the story of Mumble, a tone deaf emperor penguin who can't sing like the other penguins in his colony. Mumble's talent lies in dance, but he is considered a freak and is ostracised. Lord of the Rings star, Elijah Wood, voices Mumble. Miller, the 61-year-old film veteran, has a strong reputation in the US for films including Mad Max, Babe and Lorenzo's Oil. American movie critics, tired from Hollywood's recent avalanche of mediocre animated films, were overwhelmingly positive about Happy Feet in their reviews, ensuring packed North American cinemas over the weekend. "The many musical numbers are brilliantly choreographed and orchestrated through some of the best motion capture ever employed in a cartoon," Hollywood Reporter critic Kirk Honeycutt wrote. USA Today's Claudia Puig wrote: "The film features some of the more endearing animated characters in recent memory". Casino Royale finished second at the North American Box office with $US40.6 million ($A52.92 million) while Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, was third with $US14.35 million ($A18.7 million). Happy Feet opens in Australia on Boxing Day. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=163966

I have just seen "Death at a Funeral" very very funny, British comedy at its best, the Brits do comedy well , worth a look
I love British comedies. This is the first I have heard of this movie but I'm always the last one to see a movie so this isn't saying much. I will have to make time to see this.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.
I just saw Jumper yesterday... wow, has this got a lot of MIXED reviews!
I've heard both sides and I've got to say I see why it has. It has excellent special effects that make your jaw drop.... HOWEVER, the plot literally jumps all over the place and gets lost within itself and when you've finally finished watching it - you sit back with an... 'okay...well that’s just stupid' and it’s more than obvious something was changed to try very hard to make this movie try for a sequel but because it’s SO forced… I don’t know how well that will go down if it ever does come out.
The acting is bad… and female lead (forgot her name) was exactly her character from the OC with the little head wobble… ditzy lines – all of it. The movies also has everything any ‘has to be a blockbuster’ movie of the summer must have … great scenery, sexy actors, fast car, sex scene, weapons – and I mean ALL of it – from a school crush to high school bullying. God, I don’t know what else they could have thrown into this movie.
In my honest opinion - I felt like I was watching an idiot’s movie that had great potential... these people can jump wherever they want to go... but with consequences - excellent but the plot got lost really quickly and with bad acting and a stupid Hollywood future money making must ending it didn't work!
Sad really… the effects were great though. Lol – see there is a pro to the movie!
Went to the movies last night with some girls from work...saw TAKEN Ex CIA operative ( Liam Neeson) uses his skills to track and save his daughter (Maggie Grace), who has been taken into the slave trade in Paris. I always wondered if I agreed with 'torture' and thought not until seeing this movie.... now I think (a parent) one would do anything to get back a child they loved, especially if they had the means!!!!
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
I've recently watched Futurama : The Beast With A Billion Backs, Office Space and Idiocracy. I still have Lost in Translation waiting to be watched.
Office Space 1/2 It was a pleasant satire on the goings-on of a mind-numbingly boring office environment, however, some of the recurring motifs really a little thin, and the ending just seemed a bit abrupt and made the movie feel shorter than it was. There was a lot more ground they could have covered and I felt that this movie was a wasted opportunity. Still highly recommended viewing though. Stars Rod Livingston, David Herman (Futurama), Stephen Root (King of the Hill), Jennifer Aniston (Friends).
Futurama : The Beast With A Billion Backs 1/2 Word of warning... this is the single most bizarre Futurama episode/movie ever created. If you're not into overly wacky, absurdist, outlandish storylines, this movie is not for you. I for one really enjoyed it. I found the storyline to be completely silly, and the jokes plentiful. Basically, the film begins where the last film left off, where the universe ripped open to reveal yet another universe, which houses a planet-sized monster within abducts the entire human race with it's "tentacles" (which are in fact "gentacles"). You don't need to have seen Bender's Big Score to understand the movie as the only aspect that this movie carries over from it's predecessor is the cliffhanger ending. Stars Billy West, Katey Segal (Married With Children), Brittany Murphy (Sin City, King of the Hill), Stephen Hawking and Dan Castellaneta (The Simpsons).
Idiocracy While Fox continues to fund absolute sh*t like Date/Epic/Superhero/Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans, they left this enjoyable comedy by Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Office Space) in the dirt, with complete disregard for the 30 million or so (U.S.) dollars that it cost to make the film. (no thanks to lack of advertising, advance previews or ANYTHING, this film only made $700,000 domestically ).
With that said, this film wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't that bad either. It's an aquired taste to say the least. The storyline revolves around a man (Luke Wilson) who is frozen in a hibernation chamber, and wakes up in the year 2505, where society has become so incredibly dumbed down that he is easily the smartest man on Earth. The humour is frequently crude, but it is done so in a way that it accurately satirizes modern society more so than the post-modern. Like Office Space, I felt like there was a lot of wasted potential as the film ended on a rather abrupt (and formulaic) note, leaving very little ambiguity as to what will become of human civilisation post 2505.
If you can handle 80 minutes of "dumb" humour (regardless of whether or not you'll "get" the more subtle jabs at contemporary society), then you'll probably end up hating this movie, however, for what it's worth, it's a decent film, but not worth rewatching IMO, and falls pale in comparison to Office Space. Also stars Maya Rudolph and Terri Crews (Everybody Hates Chris).
I recently watched ‘Gone Baby Gone’ directed by Ben Affleck with his brother Casey starring. Link to IMDB…. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452623/ I found the movie really interesting and well written and acted. It was not a joyful movie but it made you think. It was a lesson in life.
I watched a little over half of Body Heat last night, but I missed the first 45 minutes or so of the movie so the plot was kind of lost on me.
And all I can say about Kathleen Turner is WOW. She looked and sounded so different back then. Her voice was nowhere near as husky as it is now, and her facial structure seemed a little odd (well, it was primarily her teeth that stood out for me). I wouldn't be surprised if she had plastic surgery over the years [I'd be extremely disappointed in her if she did] (or if her crippling arthritis had something to do with it), but for an adult to change that much is a touch freaky. With that said, I'm a huge fan of hers (despite seeing very few of her films, although I'd like to see more of them), and it's such a shame that her career ended so prematurely.
Similarly, Wendy Richard (Miss. Brahms from Are You Being Served?) has also aged rather drastically over the years (to the point that she was unrecognizable from her days in AYBS).
Saw The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor tonight (thanks to Myspace's Black Curtain got to see it 3 days before official release date and for free ).
I thought it was good. The acting was decent. Special effects good as always. Still in shock as to why they replaced Rachel Wiesz, or why she didn't want to be apart of the movie. Storyline was predictable as it pretty much follows the same way the other two in terms of plot development. Good one to see if you're a fan of the series.
That’s great Matt. I love these kinds of movies. Jet Li is one of my fav actors ever. I watched Hell Boy on TV the other night and immediately acquired the second one. Fantabulous. Loved it.
Saw The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor this arv and loved it. Rollicking good yarn. Brendan is so goofy looking but I loved all the moves. Jet Li looked fabulous when he was fully restored. Just a heap of escapist fun. Watched 'Wanted' the other day and loved it too. Great escapist fun. Not a bad story line and blood and guts in almost every scene... my kinda movie.
I can't wait until Wildchild and Angus, thongs and perfect (*cough* full-frontal*) snogging comes out, plus I want to see the dance one and the bunny one.
I saw The Mummy today and thought it was terrible. I was a massive fan of the first, and especially the second. It just seemed to lose all its spark whether it be the 7 years between films or lack of Rachael Weisz (IMO it was a mix of the two). Not to mention the extremely poor dialogue, I know its action and not meant to be golden globe winning but it was beyond cringe worthy and left me very dissapointed.
sounds like my english teacher.. the best mark in our class last time was a b- :O people fail and she tells them she was generous. it's like.. thanks.. lol
I watched The Mummy 3 on Friday (and not by choice). I thought it was absolute sh*t. While the special effects were executed well and all, and it had some cool action sequences, but it wasn't enough to mask some of the most POORLY written and acted dialogue I've ever heard in a movie. It was blatantly obvious that Maria Bello was NOT British (she sounded like an American putting on an accent), and don't get me started with the embarrassingly lame "one-liners" (e.g. "I hate mummies! They never play fair!" ).
LAME! LAME! LAME! Can't believe some schmuck actually got paid to write this piece of sh*t.
I'll give it 1 1/2 stars. 1 for the special effects, and a bonus 1/2 for that gorgeous "mature" Chinese lady.
I guess you can do worse than The Mummy, and I suppose there is a market for this kind of brain-dead popcorn flick, but it's just not for me.
I watched Never Been Kissed today. It was pretty good, even though it's one of those totally predictable movies, but it still managed to invoke tense-ness near the end =D The flashback scene when her prom date throws the paint on her was so sad, (easiest way to get to me, stories like that xD).. anyway, I rate it... 6.5/10
My housemates went to see 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'. He went to sleep and she was bored to distraction. It was a late morning screening so it wasn't like they were tired. Overlong, stupid story she said.
I watched the 2 episode long pilot of Firefly and the first 2 or 3 episodes again.... for the 10th time at least. Anyone who has not watched all the episodes (13 or 14 of them) of the series should do so immediately.
Edit: Fark.... not the DVD thread, but the movie one... Fine! I also saw part of the movie Serenity again. It kicks arse too.

I read a blog saying it was really sad, they cried the whole time. It's 3 hours! :O
^^^ the premise of the story is Benjamin (Brad Pitt) is born old and grows younger. Falls in love with Kate Winslet's character as their ages become close to each others and of course it's going to end in tears. Cry all the way through a 3 hour movie? OMG.

"I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be.
LMAO it was sad!! We were all almost crying but then our friend was laughing so it ruined the mood
Ok guys, should I watch "My Spy" or "Pretty Persuasion" tonight? (Rated M and MA15+ respectively for those interested ) I wanted to watch Caligula but then I changed my mind :O
Edit- Omg, I just looked up "My Spy", and in the US it's called "My Mom's New Boyfriend". Why change it! That's like, "Suddenly 30" vs "13 Going on 30"
I watched Iron Man today..twice, back to back. Its a great movie. I wasn't a great fan of the comic book, but I think the movie is amazing. Robert Downey Jr was the perfect cast as action hero (though never in a million years would I have thought of him). It is nice to see a hero who is mature. Also there is the phenomenal special effects...mixing 'real armour' with CGI which looked real. The plot was usual but the humour made it interesting...I can see a sequel coming.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
My Fem-HM went to see Seven Pounds yesterday at the movies and was utterly bored, again. Her 18 year old daughter was also so disappointed that she wanted to walk out on the movie. They stayed because it costs so much to attend these days but were sorry they did.
I'm surprised at 'the above' Suzi...the movie has good rating and Will Smith is a polished actor. It is a story of giving and atoinement...I think I will still see it.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
Just watched Meet Dave, staring Eddie Murphy. About a crew of miniature aliens operate a spaceship that has a human form. A comedy, romance, family Sci-Fi. Not bad...had quite a few laughs and a good time.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
I saw Seven Pounds yesterday. I didn't know anything about the movie before I saw it and I was kinda forced into watching it but I'm glad I was because I enjoyed it. The moral direction in which the film takes you may not be agreeable to some, but if you simply take the film for what it is, and that is a story being told and not taught then I think you will enjoy it.

Samson and Delilah
A tragic 'love story' set against the harsh Australian desert. Surprisingly there is little dialogue in the story, the audience just watch as the teenagers plight unfolds. The scenery is brutal , yet beautiful, their lives seemly meaningless as they interact and seek out each other. Samson never speaks, but loves music and is beaten by his brother when he tries to play his music. Delilah cares for her aging Nana and is accused and beaten by her Aunts for not caring enough, when her Nana dies. Samson steals a car and takes the comatose Delilah away with him. When the car runs out of petrol they become 'street kids' and live under a bridge in the town where they stop....and worse things happen to them. It is not a happy story and does not have a happy ending, but there is some hope for them.
The movie theatre was unusually quite as the film progressed. The story is about the plight of homeless teenagers and addiction (petrol sniffing). The director takes you to another world were you view what is happening but he makes no judgement and he says he didn't feel obligated to make us comfortable there. It is tender film, a honest story but tough in the telling and I left the theatre feeling depressed but glad that I had seen it.
My son has. He said it starts out great and about 70% of the way in they stuff up the entire story line and ruin it. He said it was an excellent sci-fi in his opinion (his fav genre) but at 25 he is very discerning He is going to send it to me and see what I think

I'm not sure I'd even classify it as science fiction
"To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable; only unexplained. " The Doctor
I would put it more in the fantasy column. My feeling is that regardless of the setting the storyline needs some realism in it to be considered science fiction. With todays dumbed down audiences and the types that lurk around the IMDB I wouldn't worry about the tags they apply to movies!
"To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable; only unexplained. " The Doctor
Released: 24 September 2009 Genre:Action | Sci-Fi | Thriller Rating PG Staring Bruce Willis as Tom Greer (FBI) Rosamund Pike as Maggie (his wife) Radha Mitchell as Peters (his partner) Ving Rhames as The Prophet
Plot
In the world of Surrogates, most humans interact with society from within the safety of their homes, through attractive robotic stand-ins. Bruce Willis (Greer) appears with thick, blonde hair, and wrinkle-free skin that quickly identifies him as the "surrogate" while the more recognizably aged, bald haired Willis, you know to be the wireless operator of the android. Bruce Willis stars as an FBI agent who after, his own surrogate is destroyed, must venture out in the community to investigate a murder and discovers a plot to rid the planet of all humans and their surrogates.
From the beginning of the movie...I was totally entertained. The surrealism of the story is not too far-out...I can see the not so distant future being like this. There was not the usual action, we have come to expect in Bruce Willis movies...it is more murder mystery. I loved it and will have to see it again soon.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
Just come from seeing AVATAR today...and I didn't want to leave the theater or break the spell of being in an other time, another world.....it was magic.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
OMG!!! I am soooo with Candy!!! Saw Avatar yesterday, it was so awesome!!!! Best movie I've seen for a very long time, great strong characters, great strong storyline, and yes, the effects on this brilliant new world of Pandora ...Amazing!! 3 hours and I didn't want it to stop!!!
It is the best movie. OMG how could anyone not fall totally in love with it. Its was so mesmerising in its beauty.
And Taz....did you notice that the avatar bodies mimicked the actors.....I thought some were Maoris (even though they were blue) and at the end when I watched the credits... yes they were. New Zealander's had a lot to do with the special effects in making the movie.
I'm planning a trip to Brisbane just to see it again...but this time in 3D.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
I just caught this movie last night called 'Triangle' starring Melissa George and it was pretty damn good. A refreshing change from your ordinary hollywood slasher and one that a thinking movie goer would appreciate. I'm glad I caught this little gem, imho one of the best thriller\mysteries of 2009.
I have watched the beginning of 'Derailed' and have to say I couldn't watch it past 20 minutes mainly because it was about infidelity. Since my (ex) husband was unfaithful in 1992-1993 I cannot watch movies where people are unfaithful to their loved one's. I'm sorry The Bridges of Madison County came out around that same time as the emotional upheaval I went through and I have never watched it either. It cuts too close to the bone. I am instead watching Goosebumps the 'kids' series which I have always loved!
Okeydokey, read a review of the movie 'Derailed' and decided I would give it a go. Got a little further into it and saw that an affair was not actually entered into, properly, and the story certainly took a turn in a direction I was not expecting Wow... I must say I will watch it again, at least once more
A very clever movie, Clive Owen soon shifts into a rhythm that he is most known for. That of the smart thinking hero. Loved him in 'Inside Man' and certainly loved him in this. There are a few OMG moments and a few... 'I never saw that coming' moments! Derailed..... watch it!
Glad to hear you loved it Suzi..... now give.... The Bridges of Madison County... a go. Its a great movie...I loved the romantic side of Clint Eastwood ....and really its not about being unfaithful..well maybe..but its more about ..well you will see if you watch it And come back and tell me what you thought.
I just watched a kids movie too...called BOLT. Voices by ...John Travolta ... Miley Cyrus Its an animation movie about a dog...Bolt... a fictional superhero movie star who thinks his powers are real. Some real laughs.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
A few movies I would recommend people to see would be...
Taken - Fantastic thriller The Blind Side - Fantastic true story Changeling - True story from the 1920's My Sisters Keeper - NOTHING would make you appreciate your family more! P.s I love you - Beautiful romantic comedy The Sweetest Thing - the best girls night in chick flick
If it's a true story, thriller, romantic comedy or comedy - I'm in!
quote The Lovely Bones was GREAT though, saw it twice
I don't remember a Jane Campion film with this title. Maybe it was made by another NZ director which I should get to know as well ? I've seen only three movies by Jane Campion, though: "An Angel at My Table", "The Piano" of course and "The Portrait of a Lady".
"Bright Star" is her latest film about the life and work of John Keats who was one of the "Three Musketeers" of the English Romantic movement (poetry) next to Lord Byron and Shelley. I think I really should go to see this movie. As a teen I simply adored Keats who died very early at the age of 25 !
@ Tasman
I guess that this kind of movie is not exactly your cup of tea. Nevertheless I think that as a proud Kiwi you should at least try to watch one of this awards winning NZ film director. The movie was shown at the latest Cannes Film Festival (F).
As to "Seven", yep I've also lately watched this movie again and I also think that it is a masterpiece, allthough I reckon that it is less impressing on a TV screen.
I really like movies that have a little bit of history to them.. Becoming Jane, Miss Potter, The Other Boleyn Sister, Marie Antoinette, Elizabeth - they're all good. A nice way to get an idea of the past. So, yes, I'll be watching Bright Star BUT... I’ll wait for the DVD release. I love sitting in my lounge room, tissues on one side, chocolate on the other
I'll be seeing The Lovely Bones with a mate on the weekend.. should be good.
'The Lovely Bones' was panned in reviews and by critics... but what do they know! It's the people who really vote with their Cinema attendance. As I am writing this Channel 10 morning news has just shown Stanley Tucci in a feature on this terrific actor. He played the baddie in the Lovely Bones. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001804/ He is a very busy actor and after he made the Lovely Bones (in which he did not like his character) he made 'Julie and Julia' as Julia Childs' husband which brought him back to a character close to himself. I tend to follow actor's and their movies. EG: Sam Elliot, Jason Statham, Kevin Costner.... I may just watch the Lovely Bones now, on Dara's recommendation
SEVEN.... one of the best, most shocking, twisty and turny, surprising movies EVER. IMHO. Fabulous acting all around although I must say Gwyneth Paltrow is not one of my fav. actors.
I can't believe the cast of actors... very good! But.. I'm not always one for musicals so.. we'll see.
I loved the ad recently where Missy Higgins (a tourist) is sitting a car with Ernie Dingo driving and turns to somebody... "I can't believe we have a real life elder as a guide" .. Hahaha.. Ernie's face
I love sitting in my lounge room, tissues on one side, chocolate on the other
Yes, I'm allways interested in films with a biographic, literary or historic issue allthough I must admit a bit less than in the past cause I don't have the time to watch all upcoming movies. So I rather focus on the latest movies shown at international film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Montreal & Toronto, the Sundance Film Festival, etc.
I've seen 'Becoming Jane' and 'Marie Antoinette'. Both brilliant, allthough I expeced a bit more from Sofia Coppola after 'Lost in Translation'.
If you prefer watching movies at home I can highly recommend some of the good old ones, e.g.:
Amadeus (based on a Peter Shaffer play about the issue genious vs. mediocrity shown by means of the relationship between W.A. Mozart and Salieri) - Milos Forman (Soundtrack: W.A. Mozart )
The Draughtmans Contract (a brilliant thriller set in an aristocratic surrounding of 17th century South England. Main issues: The price of arrogance, class distinction, sex, conspiracy) - by Peter Greenaway (Brilliant soundtrack by Philip Glass)
Queen Margot (based on a Alexandre Dumas novel about the riots between Catholics and Protestants/Huguenots in France of the 16th century) - Patrice Chéreau (awsome soundtrack by Goran Bregovich)
Camille Claudel (a film about the life and work of the exceptional French female sculptor Camille Claudel who was in an intimate relationship with Auguste Rodin, the biggest sculptor of the 20th century. Isabelle Adjani played the leading female role and also coproduced the film.) - by Bruno Nuytten
Artemisia ( a film about the Italian female painter Artemisia Gentilleschi who was the most important painter of the barok era, 16th/17th century) - by Agnès Merlet
Mrs. Parker and Her Vicious Circle (about the American writer and most influential and redoubtable NYC literaty critic Dorothy Parker, 1920s. speaking also about her very sensitive character and her loneliness which she expressed in her brilliant and often very melancholic poetry which was only published after her death.) - Alan Rudolph
Capote (about the American writer Trueman Capote, a biogrphic film and thriller that shows some less known features of Capote, esplcially human weekness and the dark side of this famous and mostly respected writer) - by Bennett Miller
a.m.m.
As to 'Lovely Bones', which is btw. directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) I'll try to find out whether and when it can be seen in my part of the world. As this movie is nominated for the next Golden Globe awards I guess that I will have the chance to see it sometime in near future.
I've seen Capote. It was alright. I also watched a documentary on Dominick Dunne who passed away last year at 83. In the documentary he spoke a little about Capote and the small story he told about Capote was more exciting than the movie Capote! I'd love it if somebody made a movie about Dominick Dunne.
His entire life is so interesting from his childhood, going to war, his marriage, NYC social status, work in television, movie producing, becoming a novelist, writing for the crime section in Vanity Fair and of course writing on many, many, many famous American crimes. The mans life was so interesting and honest. He worked til his death at age 83 from bladder cancer.
Good list Tesla, Amadeus is one of my favourite movies. I remember seeing Mrs. Parker and Her Vicious Circle with my mum ages ago and I thought it was good.
Dominick Dunne, a great man in his own right, IMHO. The sadness he and his family must have gone through when his actress daughter Dominique was murdered by her ex boyfriend in 1982.
@ Lurveit Thx. very much for the article about Dominick Dunn. I read it and I really think that I should watch the documentary. There are some short excerpts on the web which made me even more curious.
As to Capote, I've seen it long time ago but I can still remember it For me it was a very interesting and curageous approach to get to know this 'literary untouchable' through the 'making of' story of his masterpiece 'In Cold Blood' which was adapted and picturised by legendary Richard Brooks (Key Largo, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, etc.). This movie was a cross-link to other things that I allready knew. See what I mean ? I can even remember with whom I went to see this movie and in parts also the dicussion after the movie. Of course Capote the way he is portraied in the film was a pretty digusting and opportunistic piece of s**t but I as most people find the bad guys usually more interesting than the others. Of course one could allways object a certain one-way optics but as Capote is a well known figure I see this movie as a further tessera of a portrait of an artist and a very interesting one. What is it that you disliked about this movie, as far as you can still remember?
@ complicatedsimplicity
Hi, nice to meet you !
Which movies would you recommend, not necessarily ones of the same genre ?
I can't believe the cast of actors... very good! But.. I'm not always one for musicals so.. we'll see.
I loved the ad recently where Missy Higgins (a tourist) is sitting a car with Ernie Dingo driving and turns to somebody... "I can't believe we have a real life elder as a guide" .. Hahaha.. Ernie's face
Yes I'm wanting to see this as well. The reviews I've heard are all good. Already its had a big impact as a stage show.
Could be an Aussie movie that TV channels will contantly wheel out in the future like The Castle.
You know Tesla.. maybe I should give Capote another chance - I watched it a few years ago and I can't really define what I didn't like. So, the next time I'm at the video store or catch it on Foxtel I'll give it another go.
Dominick Dunnes biography was so interesting I couldn't stop watching! As for Bran Nue Day I still can't get over Higgins and Mauboy acting debuts... should be good
Another movie I really liked too Telsa was the Duchess with Natalie Portman - another goody.
I seem to be revisiting some of the old movies in my DVD collection lately. They've sat there for years just collecting dust. Watched Donnie Darko again last night and I know many don't like it ..but imo it is such a great movie.
Hmm, don't know this film but I've seen Donnie Brasco with Al Pacino & Johnny Depp which was not bad but far from spectacular.
Meanwhile I've seen a new French film: The Prophet by Jaques Audiard who won the Prize of the Jury in Cannes last year. Pretty good prison movie with an awsome actor in the male leading role. The actor is maybe 'my' discovery of the year. Btw. my absolute favourite movie that I also discovered right at the beginning of the last year was an Italian film about the Neapolitan Mafia: Gomorrah. In my opinion the best Mafia movie of all times. Hasn't got anything to do with Mafia glorifiying movies like e.g. Godfather etc.
LoL, of course I also watch movies of a different genre.
Donnie Darko is fabulous IMHO, but definitely an acquired taste. That was the first thing I ever saw Jake Gyllenhaal in and needed to watch it a second time to understand the movie. I am going to watch it again this week because of all the fab actor's in it
Funny, this last time I watched Donnie Darko is actually the first time I realised it was Jake Gyllenhaal. Quite a bit younger than anything else I've seen him in. He really did a great job!!
The only other movies I've seen him in are Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead. Two movies that I really wasn't very keen on, but his performances in both were excellent.
Haven't seen either of those movies (by choice). I acquired Donnie Darko this week and have yet to watch it My friend Helen went to see Avatar last night but it's not really her kind of movie. She kept calling Avatoir like Abattoir, hilarious. I haven't heard her verdict.... yet!
Worst movie of all time is finally revealed From: NewsCore February 03, 2010 2:37am
Batman And Robin voted worst movie Battlefield Earth voted second worst The Love Guru voted third worst
EMPIRE magazine has just released the verdict on what's been voted as the worst movie of all time.
It's George Clooney’s comic book adventure Batman And Robin even though the actor, a former Oscar-nominee, is tipped to be in the running for a Best Actor trophy for his role in Up in the Air.
The 1997 Batman and Robin, co-starring Chris O’Donnell and Uma Thurman, cost $US140 million ($158.5 million) to make and was blamed for almost killing off the Batman film franchise, The Sun reports.
Voters in the magazine poll slammed the film for its anatomically-correct Batsuits and an "overblown" script.
An Empire Magazine spokesman said, "It has become a byword for franchise-killing and bad movie-making."
The film got almost three times as many votes as the next entry, John Travolta’s sci-fi flick Battlefield Earth.
And Austin Powers funnyman Mike Myers’ comedy The Love Guru came in third place.
I have just seen "Bran Nue Dae" I just loved it, would highly recommend, worth a look, Filmed in Broome, (a place I love) and Perth (Freo), and Magda is very funny
BRAN NUE DAE (PG) 87 mins Directed By : Rachel Perkins Starring : Geoffrey Rush, Magda Szubanski Austarlia's first Aboriginal musical is set in 1969 with young Willie living in Broome Western Australia, an idyllic old pearl fishing port. He spends his days fishing with his mates until sent to Perth for school. He then runs away from school and embarks on a 2500km adventure on his way back to Broome while pursued by by Geoffrey Rush, a Catholic Priest.
Television Doesn't Rule My Life .... But .....
Wouldn't the World be a far better place if everyone just thought like I do
My entry in evsc is a great talent. Aussie singer, songwriter, plays guitar and piano (since age of 6yrs) and she debuts as actress in that first Australian Aboriginal Musical.... Bran Nue Day.
GOODBYE fellow eBlah's .....it sure has been nice meeting yo'all here and I will miss everyone of you
I initially planed to add some information about the entered artists but finally decided not to do it because some of you might have complained about the content or might have recognised the players there where some info was provided by the participants themselves. However retrospectively I must say that it was a pitty that I didn't do it.
I took my nephews out to see Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. We were actually quite disappointed with the film and thought it could have been a lot better. None of us have read any of the books and I hadn't even heard of the series before this film came out. With the amount of money this one is making I think it's safe to say we can expect a few more films in the series.
I entire film just seemed rushed and the characters almost one dimensional even for a kids flick. The actual plot I thought was a bit simplistic and having not read the book it left me wondering exactly what was being left out in the film because you can really see the potential this film/series has. Coming out of the cicema my nephews were asking me questions about some of the scenes which I couldn't explain except to tell them that maybe it was explained a bit more in the book. The special effects were great and the kid that plays Percy Jackson was really good. It'll be interesting to hear what Chris Columbus, having done a few of the harry potter films, has to say about his work here because the director usually takes the main grunt of criticism in bad reviews but I have a sneaky feeling a lot this was out of his control and he probably did good with what he was given.
I can see why so many people are comparing this to the Harry Potter series but after watching this movie you truly do appreciate the complex universe J.K.Rowling created for Harry Potter.
I've heard these days of a documentary about a very interesting issue: The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the church where Jesus Christ was buried.
It's a church which is shared by 6 religious denominations which often causes difficult and sometimes even absurd situations. E.g. on important holidays such as Easter there happen to occur not only verbal arguments but also physical arguments. The caretaker of this church is and has ever since been a Muslim family. Interesting, isn't it? I don't know whether you will ever have the opportunity to see this film but here you've got at least the trailer.
I whish everyone a peaceful and happy Easter !
(the trailer is in German and English but it's widely self-explanatory.)
My BFF Helen took me to see 'Inception' recently. Absolutely fabulous. The 2 hour and 28 minutes of movie went far quicker than 'real time' . Full of action and not kind to people who weren't 100% attentive to the 'story-line'. My best friend and I only got confused a few times The action scenes were spectacular. Everything from snowy blizzards, imagined landscapes, the most interesting Motel I have ever seen, lots of gunfire and mayhem. Loved it and the actors were fabulous in their characters. I would see it again in an instant. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/
Then just last Tuesday Helen and I saw "Matching Jack" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1447499/ Jacinda Barrett was wonderful as Jack's Mum and a joy to watch. James Nesbitt was the breath of fresh air (as usual) this man is one of the best actor's I have had the pleasure of watching. I don't normally watch/like Aussie movies but this was such a heart wrenching pleasure to watch! The son of Conner/James Nesbitt gave such an excellent performance. Never seen one so young act so very well and believably. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2240346/ to read about this wonderful young actor. I cried, I even sobbed. This movie made me laugh and cry but most importantly made me glad I watched it.
I saw Inception and enjoyed it too ,very very confusing at first, and thought provoking. Lots of arguments as to the ending I enjoyed Tomorrow when the War Began a lot more however
