Taking Chance

Starring: Kevin Bacon, Tom Aldredge, Nicholas Art, Blanche Baker, Tom Bloom
Genre :  Drama, True Story, War, Western
Quality : DVD9
Discs : 1
Original Year  : 4
Release Date  : 2009-04-16
Language : English
Subtitle : Chinese, English

Descriptions : Based on the true story of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a marine who volunteers to escort the body of a 19-year-old soldier, who was killed in Iraq, back to his family in Wyoming. The film's score is composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Good Shepherd, Hollywoodland). Gripping, earthy string arrangements ebb and flow as the story unfolds.

Working as a strategic analyst at Marine Corps Base Quantico in VA, Lt. Col. Strobl (Kevin Bacon) learns that Phelps had once lived in his hometown, and volunteers to escort the body to its final resting place in Wyoming. As Strobl journeys across America, he discovers the great diligence and dignity in how the military, and all those involved with preparing and transporting the body, handle their duties. Equally important, he encounters hundreds of people affected by Chance's death, a vast majority of whom never knew him. This collective grieving eventually causes Lt. Col. Strobl, a veteran of Desert Storm now assigned to office duty, to probe his own guilt about not re-deploying to Iraq for the current conflict. Arriving in Wyoming, Lt. Col. Strobl completes his catharsis when he encounters Chance's gracious family and friends, and discovers an extraordinary outpouring of community support.

Samson and Delilah

A tragic 'love story' set against the harsh Australian desert.
Surprisingly there is little dialogue in the story, the audience just watch as the teenagers plight unfolds. The scenery is brutal , yet beautiful, their lives seemly meaningless as they interact and seek out each other. Samson never speaks, but loves music and is beaten by his brother when he tries to play his music. Delilah cares for her aging Nana and is accused and beaten by her Aunts for not caring enough, when her Nana dies. Samson steals a car and takes the comatose Delilah  away with him. When the car runs out of petrol they become 'street kids' and live under a bridge in the town where they stop....and worse things happen to them.
It is not a happy story and does not have a happy ending, but there is some hope for them.

The movie theatre was unusually quite as the film progressed. The story is about the plight of homeless teenagers and addiction (petrol sniffing). The director takes you to another world were you view what is happening but he makes no judgement and he says he didn't feel obligated to make us comfortable there. It is  tender film, a honest story but tough in the telling and I left the theatre feeling depressed but glad that I had seen it.

My son has. He said it starts out great and about 70% of the way in they stuff up the entire story line and ruin it. He said it was an excellent sci-fi in his opinion (his fav genre) but at 25 he is very discerning He is going to send it to me and see what I think

I'm not sure I'd even classify it as science fiction

From IMDB:
Quoted Text
Action | Drama | Sci-Fi | Thriller
so with Aliens in it I am inclined to call it a Sci-fi.
Full details about District 9 at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1136608/

I would put it more in the fantasy column. My feeling is that regardless of the setting the storyline needs some realism in it to be considered science fiction. With todays dumbed down audiences and the types that lurk around the IMDB I wouldn't worry about the tags they apply to movies!
