Pop star Britney Spears has filed for divorce from her dancer husband Kevin Federline, according to court documents published in the US today.

The 24-year-old teen idol, who married Federline in 2004, will seek custody of the couple's two children, one-year-old Sean Preston and two-month-old Jayden James, the documents lodged at the Los Angeles County Superior Court said.

Spears' lawyers cited "irreconcilable differences" for the split while the TMZ.Com celebrity website cited friends of the singer as saying there was no single reason for the divorce, rather "a string of events".

It is the second divorce for the pop queen, who has sold more than 60 million albums since she shot to worldwide fame in 1999.

In January 2004, she married a childhood friend - 22-year-old Jason Alexander - at a Las Vegas wedding chapel.

But after 55 hours of marital madness and publicity gone wild,  the couple decided to scrap "I do" for "I wish I hadn't" and called the whole thing off.

It took a judge about two hours to act on the "complaint for annulment" filed in the Family Court.

As much as I'm pleased she's ditching that no good guy and getting herself back on track, she's not the same Britney she was 5 years ago. She's now a mother. Her first priority should be those kids, not her career. And now those kids are going to grow up without a dad. Boys need their dad, not just on the weekends, but all the time. So right now, I'm feeling sorry for those kids...

She looks happier without him already, out and about (see the pics on Breatheheavy.com), maybe she is trying to steal the limelight off of him and his new album . I can't see the duet being released now. He is gonna bomb now even worse, the only reason the record company even looked at him was because of Britney. He is still gonna recieve $30 000 a month off of Britney for a year, but he can't touch the rest of her money, thank god her manager and family convinced her to get a pre-nup.

If she didn't have a pre-nup she would probably have to give him 1/2 of everything. Why worry about getting child support off of him, he dosn't and won't from now on make enough money to even make an impact on Britneys account.

Pop-star Britney Spears faces a bitter divorce battle after estranged husband Kevin Federline vowed to fight for custody of the couple's children in court documents filed Wednesday.

Lawyers for Federline responded to Spears' demand for a divorce by lodging papers indicating the pop star's husband will seek sole custody of the couple's two baby sons as well as spousal support.

Celebrity website TMZ.Com reported on Tuesday that Federline would seek custody as a tactical ploy aimed at securing a slice of Spears' fortune, estimated at around 120 million dollars by Forbes in 2004.

Reports have said that Spears, who filed divorce papers at a Los Angeles court on Monday, was protected against a costly settlement through an "iron-clad" pre-nuptial agreement.

Spears is seeking a divorce from Federline after a two-year marriage to the former back-up dancer, and just two months after the birth of the couple's second son.

No judge would dare give him sole custody! He doesn't have a chance!!
