BRITNEY Spear's shorn-off locks have gone on sale on eBay for $US1 million ($1.27 million).

The New York Daily News says the salon where the star chopped off all her hair is also flogging leftover drink and a lighter left behind by the singer.

Britney went wild with the clippers at Esther's Haircutting Studio, in Tarzana, California, at the weekend, sparking another media storm over her "out of control" lifestyle.

The salon claims to have the only authentic Britney locks - and says it will donate some of the proceeds of the eBay sale to charity.

But there are a number of other sellers offering Britney's hair on eBay.

"It's pretty crazy all the frauds and stuff that's out there," the salon owner's husband, JT Tognozzi, was quoted as saying.

Spears took the shears to her own head in full view of the paparazzi after a beautician reportedly refused to do it.

A LA TV station then showed footage of a newly shorn Spears at a local tattoo parlour getting two new pieces of body art and pictures from both stops were quickly beamed around the internet.

Esther Tognozzi, owner of the low-priced salon, told Us Weekly that after Spears lopped off her brunette hair extensions, she "just looked in the mirror and said with tears in her eyes, 'Oh, my God, I shaved it all off. My mom is going to be so upset with me'."

Tognozzi told the magazine she waived her normal $US20 fee for Spears.

"We have no idea how she found us," another salon worker told the magazine. "She just walked in and said she wanted to shave her head. Esther has been in the business for 30 years and said, 'I'm not doing that.' But Britney was set on having her head shaved so she started doing it herself."

Spears, 25, picked up the shears only days after US media reported she went to a rehab clinic in Antigua and abruptly checked herself out.

Her tattoo parlour visit added to concerns that her life is getting more and more out of control.

Shop employee Emily Wynne-Hughes told Us Magazine that Spears "wasn't making sense at all and you could tell she's not in a good place at all, and that she is totally freaking out".

"After she left the shop we all just looked around and said to each other, 'We just saw a huge celebrity on the verge of a nervous breakdown'."

Spears, who skyrocketed to fame as a teen in 1999 with her hit Baby One More Time, and has since sold more than 70 million albums, put her music career on hold for two years to become a mother, and only recently returned to the recording studio.

She has appeared regularly in the tabloid press over the past few months since filing for divorce in November from her husband, dancer Kevin Federline, who is the father of her two children.

Spears's post-marriage party life has been documented in pictures of her nightlife in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Las Vegas, famously without panties.

I don't find it unbelievable, I think it's completely pathetic that anybody would pay squat for that sort of thing.

It could be anyone's hair. Their is no guarentee it would be her's at any rate. I could not imagine anything stupider than buying Brit's or anyone's hair... period.

so... she ended up going back into rehab yesterday or something - app. shes battling 'bad demons' and her family has asked us to "pray for her" ... right.  US people magazine confirmed it first after her manager released a statement that she was back in.

Theres a photo of her walking about in some pink t-shirt ... its so tight and it looks as tho shes gained weight again .. shes smoking PLUS that shaved head and some tacky looking glasses shes wearing - I dunno - its all so wrong how her life has ended up BUT you make your own paths in life AND this was the one SHE chose.

Paula... I am shocked.... you know from watching all those CSI shows that DNA is only available if the root is attached (excuse the pun) to the hair. It's that part of the hair they get the DNA from.... Can you imagine the job with ALL the hair she did have?

Pray for her???!!! what the? The girl needs more than prayer and that's saying something!

Britney leaves rehab again

Britney Spears has done it again - leaving a live-in drug and alcohol rehab clinic, less than a day after checking in, according to several US reports.

It was the second time in a week that Spears had entered a rehabilitation facility and checked out within hours.

The television news magazine The Insider initially reported that Spears called a car service, walked out of the Promises rehabilitation centre and left the facility early this morning.

Later, the TV show Extra and the website TMZ.com said Spears, 25, left the centre far short of the usual 45-day stay.

TMZ said she could not handle rehab and went home.

Eddie Michaels, a spokesman for the public relations agency that handles Promises, said he had no comment and would not confirm that she had been there or that she had left.

There has been no sign of the 25-year-old singer's two young sons amid the crotch-flashing, mascara-smeared, vomit-specked nightclubbing that preceded her impulsive head-shave at a Los Angeles salon - an act psychologists have interpreted as an existential cry for help.

But Spears's meltdown is more than just her personal tragedy. Sexualised almost since her days as a Disney child star, she is the canary in the coalmine of troubled young womanhood.

Hmmmm. my hubby shaved his head on the weekend...it's almost the same colour as Brit's....*dollar signs in eyes*  Could make a killing

Don't think I've ever seen a more texbook case of a 'breakdown in motion' than Britney Spears at the moment. It must have psychologists a little wet in the pants.

I guess the reality of her actions finally dawned on her, she married K-Fed/FedEx and had two children with him and he's now a permanent stain on the white dress that was her life whether she likes it or not. Now she's divorcing him and he's fighting for custody of their children which if she keeps up this behaviour he might have a real chance of winning. Wouldn't that make you want to drink yourself stupid, throw your leg over any guy you meet, shave your head and get a tattoo or two? All this from a once good little Baptist church girl!

I would have put money that Christina Aguilera would have been the one to end up in rehab, not Britney.

There's something funny in the cordial their serving at the Mousketeers me thinks. I think they served the same stuff at Young Talent Time (our version of the Mouseketeers) because strange stuff happened there too.
