Thank God You're Here brings together a group of celebrities whose improvisation skills are tested to the max when they are thrown into an unknown situation which they must ad-lib their way through.  Each star walks, clueless, through a doorway and into a scene which might be an operating theatre, a Roman dungeon or a spaceship. Greeted by the catchphrase "Thank God You're Here...", the celebrity must think on their feet and quickly figure out who they are and why they are there.

source: http://www.fremantlemedia.com/page.asp?partid=476

apparently its done by the people that did "the panel" and "D-generation" etc. Rob Stitch etc.

yeah, the term "Celebrity" is loosely thrown about today. Apparently "celebrity" means "I spent 1 week in the big brother house before being voted out."

Hmmm, sounds interesting, kind of like a cross between the old 80's(ish) ABC Show Theatre Sports, and Who's Line is It Anyway done in a pantomine way, could be good depending on who the Celebs are, stand-up Comics and Stage Actors would be good for this I would think (like the ones who did Let The Blood Run Free, especially when it was Live On Stage, and the Audience decided the way the story went, which of course they tried to replicate on TV).

And yeah Celebs is thrown around loosely these days, then again what else are they going to call them, Entertainers would not do ... as I would hardly call some of the BB and Idol People Entertainers either.

I think thats the whole point of the ad, to stick out, make ppl talk - like this!

It sounds like it could be a good show, if the right ppl are used. I absolutly loved 'Who's line is it anyway?', talk about smart comedians! But I will be totally disgusted if they end up using Big Brother,Idol and washed up sports stars. It HAS to have actual quick thinking comedians to work, by the sounds.

It would definately have to depend on the celebrity - If they used big brother celebrities i couldn't see it working as they weren't the cleverest bunch of people around

This will be the biggest bunch of s**t ever....

The americans have been doing the same sort of thing for years... Anyone ever seen Drew Carey's Green Screen????  Whose line is it anywhere???

And the fact that they're going to get australian "celebrities" and "comedians" who are so terrible they couldn't make a 5 year old laugh....

This will have to be one of the most truly pointless shows along with Friday night games... what a waste of time... We could have had more American comedy instead.

So who watched Thank God You're Here tonight?

I thought it wasn't too bad. Heck, at least its not another reality show, American drama or lifestyle show.

Shane Bourn was good, and so was Frank Woodley.
They'll have to get really funny people on though.
The novelty of people ad libbing lines will soon wear off if its not funny.
I'd like to see Dave Hughes on this show.

Yeah, it was ok, not great but not too bad. It has potential, but as noted it will really depend on who the "celebs" are....

I Didn't like it at all. I am really getting sick of "celebrities" on TV (that sounds wrong...) But I mean, even Berts Family Feud and Temptation and countless other shows are using the B and C grade celebrities to boost the ratings. i would muchrather watch ordinary people on game shows.

Back to the topic - Thank god your'e Here was pretty lame.

I only saw the first part with the girl doing the fitness thing.  I thought it was pretty good but I don't know how the other 3/4 of the show went.  It's got potential to be really good or really bad and everything in between so I reckon it's not the type of show that should be judged from one episode or even two or three.

It is getting kind of old to have celebrities on TV for this and that, I was dissapointed to see Australia's Brainiest AFL player this weekend, but with this show I think it's probably better that the people who go on it are used to audience to begin with.

Didn't like it at all. I was really disappointed with Working Dog, they're usually pretty good but this one wasn't up to scratch. At least not for me. I won't be watching it again.

it was ok... but I think it was only saved by Frank Woodley imo. he was hilarious. the rest though.. I lost interest half way through. Doubt I will watch next week unless there is someone good on. And by good I mean someone who I know is really funny and that I like. I didnt like anyone on tonights show (aside from frank), Id never even heard of two of them!  I can just see it becoming the show that ex-reality show people end up on.

and yes! dave hughes is someone I would like to see on it. -that- would be funny.

It would be better if they have a limited set of really funny people that they use regularly, instead trying to find new people all the time, and using any old nobody.

Here's some other people who could be good

Colin Lane
Carl Baron
Ross Noble
Alan Brough
Jimeoin
Shaun Micallef

It has to be comedians, not news readers and such.
I reckon there are plenty of under-used Australian comedians.

I loved this show. Everyone (expect for the last performer, the one who was doing the dolphin thing) was reaaaally funny. I couldn't stop laughing in some parts.

This show was very nearly the worst thing I have ever seen on television. The Panel guys have missed with this one in my opinion. I hated it. Unfunny in the extreme. It was embarassing to even watch it. I hope they stop at this one ep and leave it at that.

Yeah it was truly bad television ,the panel people should get back to doing something that was funny..like ,um the panel!

It rated well first up but hopefully it'll drop off and be mercifully cancelled.

Pretty harsh, fajo and nitehork. OK, it wasn't champagne comedy, but it wasn't that bad. Its ceratinly a step in the right direction for local content.
We're still crying out for a really good sketch comedy show though.

If you compare it to other local stuff like spicks and specks and the glass house it falls way short. It's ambitious I agree but it doesn't work.
As for sketch comedy we have the ronnie johns show and nothing else,so maybe the boys from the panel should look at that area instead of a silly improv show.

The guys from Working Dog are popular and have a good reputation. It doesn't surprise me that a lot of people tuned in to see what the show was like. But I don't think it'll last...in fact I think the ratings for next weeks show will have dropped dramatically.

I agree Fajo...it is ambitious, but really doesn't work.

I'd like to see the Panel (minus Kate) come back too. I actually really missed it last year.

Cass.

Saw Tom Gleisner and Shane Bourne on Rove last night. A fairly shameless piece of cross promotion, but I was pleasantly surprised to see my prayers had been answered, and Shaun Micallef is on TGYH tonight. They showed a bit of his performance, and it looks like it will be worth watching.

Sadly I was equally dismayed to learn that one of the other guests is Bert Newton's son.

If only they stuck to proper comic performers, they'd have a good show.

Well. I'M HOOKED!!! I had tears in eyes! I love the panel...but this had me just as entertained if not even more!!

I love that the main celebrities they've so far had on aren't 'overnighters', 'reality tv contestants' or all 'signed to ten'. I love that they all seem to have a decent background in comedy. It's what makes it work...they're actually funny!!

It's also on at a good time in the week.. when it's all a bit boring these guys will set you up for a night of laughs. If I had to critique..i'd have a few things i'd change. Like 'THE AWARD' and FLOWERS?? I kinda hope they have regulars with newbie comedians thrown in every now and then. why can't they just say who they thought was the best. They don't need to give them anything for it!? .. flowers??

Also, I really hope they do something about the hosts one-liners. Shaun Micallef is a great host..but with BAD one-liners.. and Tom the judge..he's really awkward to watch and not a whole lot funny. Shaun did say though 'special judge for this evening' so hopefully they'll actually chop n change it every week.. SURPRISE US! haha.

The Neighbours guest too, I'm not keen on that. They had TWO of them on tonight? I love the 'special guest' celebrity thing.. them popping into a skit to surprise us but they had TWO kids from Neighbours.. I don't watch the show so I don't care for them. I get that they’re probably filming in the next room but what??.. should be waiting for Toadie to pop in one week and then one of the bad teen actors the next? I'm sure it was Full Frontal (and plenty others) that did that back in the 80's/90's. Think outside the box Working Dog... or possibly even channel ten.

Anyway, that’s the four things I'd change...but I LOVED IT!! tears..loud laughs.. i'm tuning in EVERY week!! n memba.. Big Idiots Not Good Ever! what a slogan!!

I only watched the first two sketches as I had a phone call but it was only SM in the kids show sketch that saved that half of the show for me.

Im trying to give it a chance, but Im just not finding it all that funny.

I turned to ABC after I got off the phone and was LMAO at spicks & specks. It was such a difference that I noticed it myself. stopped mid laugh and was like "now -this- is funny. why arent I laughing like this during TGYH?"

I'm not sure what the shelf life is for it, but I really enjoyed last night and it's really refreshing to see this sort of entertainment on the screen.

The World War II skit was especially magical - sort of suggests what Australian comedy could really do in the line of sitcoms, if we gave our comic talents free reign..

I sense a sitcom comeback soon.

really enjoyed the first 2 episodes of this show, as mentioned the things I would like to see fixed are the prepared 1 line comments by both Bourne and Tommy G which fall flat on their face.  Bourne should just be the straight man in the show with a little energy thrown in.

Shane Bournes humour is so 80's he's a washed up hack.

Now if they got Hughsy to host then it might be enjoyable.

Tom gleisners a bit of a tool as well, rob sitch would have been better..

ok... i'm keen on this show n i've said that from the start... n i'm keen to see it actually last but i'm seriously having my doubts!

lasts nights ep was ... pretty bad! The only two people that seriously saved that show... if only a little, would be Peter Rowsthorn and Angus Sampson.

It reminded me a lot of one of their other episodes... car yard = boat yard ?!? ..I’m sure there are other life situations they could manipulate ?!

I think Bourne has his role down pact... just introduce them to the door! but that Tom Gleisner.... I can't put up with him anymore! His beattie lil eyes...reminds me of bear in the big blue house... he's such a huge cringe factor!! ... Does anyone else find it a contradiction that these comedians/actors have to improvise everything they say... yet, Tom Gleisner needs a script to read every bloody word off.

He was the least fav on the panel... only there to shut people up when they needed to go to a break.... why have him back on tv?!? simply, he's not needed on this show... and if it fails i think his stupid judging with their weird little trophy (even though most of them are regulars) would be the main cause! The trophy and Gleisners judging... is just unnecessary.

They seriously need to ditch him from this show... just give bourne the red buzzer! ... or have a weekly celebrity push the red buzzer to end the skit. Don't over critique, we don't care!! n don't give them a stupid trophy. It's such a weird way to end the show... it's not needed!   lol, spesh cause they’re regulars!

I can just picture their houses...now, like, 20 of these perspex things, hanging around, used as book holders or something.... GAY!

Yes, last night's show was pretty flat,  Tom Gleisner's role is superfluous, and the extra bits like the boat yard and the commentating thing are frankly crap. But as far as Australian comedy goes, what else have we got?

With the Comedy Festival going on, it would have been good if they'd got some international comedians on.

Yeah Tom Gleisner is a tosser alright ,couldn't Rob Sitch do it ?

At least he's likeable and funny.

And they get 'comedians' who are reasonable on the panel(santo) but sadly unfunny on anything else ,except Glen.

Yeah, these heaps of comedians they could use. They should at least make sure they have 2 proper comedians every week.

How about Jimeoin, Magda, Wil Anderson, Rove, Peter Hellier....
Someone else who'd be really good is Ross Noble. That would be unmissable.

Tom Gleisner's alright though. The real problem with it is the guests who just aren't good at improvising comedy.

Ever thought of suggesting politicians for an episode??

They think fast on their feet. . come up with the most outrageous scenarios for serious events. . can fake it like nobody else. . look people in the eye and lie their heads off . .  and their 'improvisational' skills are proven.

Roll on John Howard as a contestant.

I agree they need far more talent eg, Woodley (one half of Lano and Woodley) and Glen Robbins. The guy that plays opposite Rove and is one of the hosts of Before the Game would be a good choice, too.

Yeah, I reckon the trophy thing is pretty tokenistic. Otherwise the same people would win all the time. Not many could compete with Frank Woodley.

I agree the trophy is pretty tokenistic and beside the point, but I think that's the way it's suppose to be - they do take the mickey out of the award at the start. It's suppose to be a fun, pub-like award.

Some people I'd love to see:

Judith Lucy
Mick Molloy
Jane Turner
Gina Riley
More Lano / Woodley
Bob Downe

Hamish and Andy, Rove, Peter Helier, Matt and Jo (Fox fm) should all go on the show. They shouldn't keep on recycling the same people.

Anyways, the show was the really quite entertaining last night. I actually found myself ready to turn the TV off after it (even though I usually watch Prison Break). Having said that, I didn't end up turning the tv off

Hamish and/or Andy- good idea.

Hopefully they'll work out who's good and who's not and build up a decent sized talent pool. Judging by last night they seem to be on the right track.

Funny how the same people can keep popping up on Wednesday nights between Thank God, Spicks &Specks and the Glass House.

OMG !!!

PLEASE! Get rid of that bloody Tom Gleisner! He's sooo crap! Annoying to watch. Bad at entertainment... real bad! I feel like I'm watching a Big Brother contestant... grrr

N does anyone remember ANY of the past winners of that bloody piece of plastic?? its such a waste of time! You know, I couldn't even recall one of the ppl that won that thing... simply, because I DON'T CARE!!!

I love this show.. everyone knows what they're there to do n its heaps of fun to watch but when tom comes on its like... so what’s on the other channels? It's a MUST to change the channel when his face shows up with nothing of interest or entertainment to waste my time with. N' his comedy is soo crap. Out of all the panel hosts why'd we have to get stuck with that mofo??

He and that award are such a waste of viewing time! Channel Ten… have a meeting about it already! PLEASE !!!

Thats exactly right! the only reason for the introduction to Tom and the explanation of the award at the start is to waste a bit of time in order for the performers to get ready. Even though the show is not live? putting in the extra segments (piano salesman, interview room, tarot cards) and the discussions with Tom are there to pad up the show and provides a bit of continuity.

I'm not saying its done well but thats the reasoning for it.

Just when I thought the australians couldn't come up with a worse show than Comedy Inc and the morons who brought you Russell Coights completely stupid blunderings around australia... they managed to shove this through the door... not to mention Friday Night Games which is the biggest pile of crap (and I do mean that literally) and big brother is disgraceful.... (Having said that - big brother in all countries is generally washed up trashy crap).

I say we surrender to the huge flow of US shows and just watch good old Proper American Shows.

mmm... i actually like friday night games. got to catch the penguin task last year.. good stuff! lol

n i like this show.. its funny. they just need to watch who they have on the show.

tom gleisner needs to be sacked already! the stupid trophy's boring n the show in my books could be a good 8 outta 10 but that d*k brings it to a slamming 4 or something. he's sooooooo boring to watch with a uninteresting cringe factor about him. He hasn’t got enough talent to be the only person on the screen... channel ten, seriously! The people needed to make this show work are the comedians, the extras, bourne, crew and the cool kids doing the props. Tom Gleisner… I think not! They say he’s there to fill time but why can’t they just have bourne host, introduce, comedians do their skits, throw in a couple more of those pre-taped things, bourne finalises the show n it’s set! No stupid trophy … No talentless Gleisner!

N like I said before, the only reason we didn’t kick up a stink about him getting on the panel was because we had plenty of other entertainment to have us forget he was even at the table! His only reason for being on that show was to shut them up and cut to an ad. Well, he isn’t needed full stop on TGYH! n he isn’t comical enough to keep audiences watching the show. The guy needs his script to be funny. Tosser!

I wish they’d just get rid of him already. I lose such interest in the program when his face is on screen!

I pretty much agree though there are quality Australian shows primarily on the ABC. all the shows you mentioned are bottom of the barrel trash tv and TGYH is just the most recent sorry example.

Why is the season finale coming so soon....?

Really? Its rating really well though, isn't it?

They probably decided it would be more profitable to send someone to wander around a hospital with a camera or something.

Bollocks.

Its one of the few watchable things on commercial TV.
I wonder why they're having trouble getting people on?

I've not seen anything in these forums about this show ... so I thought I'd start a discussion.  I LOVE IT!  This is one of the freshest comedy based programs I've seen in years.  Anyone who likes quality improve can't help but think this show is good.

They are winding down on their "ratings first few" programs ... I'd like to see people get behind this one ... its raw comedy ... and its fun

Technically, Ten will only be posting "each week's best" skit for viewing like what they did for the first batch of episodes. Nothing new. However, I wonder if TGYH will be released on DVD...
Hell, THE WEDGE is coming out on DVD next month.

I'm a little perplexed as to whether this week's new episode will be considered a part of the first or second season of the programme as technically, the first batch of episodes was only a trial to determine whether the ratings justified making new episodes.

(They did this with a number of US TV shows including 24 and The O.C.)

I remember trying to watch this in the first season, but could not get over Tom's critiques (or rather the way he spoke) of performances. Is it just me or does anyone else get the irrits watching him speak? It's like his head is loose and about to fall off his shoulders.

Other than that, the performances by the stars were quite funny. I only caught the last part of last night's show, but still enjoyed it

No it's not legal, Paula, and should not be referred to openly on here.
Cal Wilson lives in Alice Springs, with her husband and kids. In her stand up Cal always incorporates reference to the kids, hubby and Alice Springs into her routine. She is one of Australia's top female Comediens. IMHO. A Natural.

Well, Andrew G (American Idol) is the 'New Comer' for the coming Episode.

He may even be as bad, or even worse, then Anthony Field and Anh Do. I hope they have someone really good to overcome Andrew's most likely unfunny performance.

His not even a funny person right? (You can see i dont watch Idol =P)

The award doesn't really matter. I think they give it to "Best effort" more than "Who gets the most laughs" so to speak. It takes a lot of guts for someone inexperienced at adult-comedy like Anthony Field to get up there and make an entire audience laugh, more so than the more experienced players such as Angus or Akmal.

Either way, I like the current system as is. They could've set it up as a horrible text-vote thing like Big Brother/Australian Idol if they wanted, but they didn't and I respect the show for that. It's not a massive excuse for a cash-grab, but rather some solid, legitemate entertainment by some of Australia's finest talent.

Yeah Alan Brough is good, but Andrew isn't (to my mind at least) a genuine comedian.  Alan is, so you expect good things from him.  I expected Andrew to bomb badly.

Thank God You're Here is a great example of pure escapist TV. There should be alot more of it.

I reckon the guys who right the sketches for TGYH could easily get into sitcom writing - we could definately do with a good aussie sitcom or two. That said, it doesn't have to be 'Aussie' as such. I think the best sketches from TGYH are the Hogan's Heros / Period Costume type sketches. I reckon Australia would be good at producing something like that - we're great at inventing charactertures and 60's sitcom TV was full of those. Instead of a typical sitcom with 3 kids and the zany Next Door Neighbour, we could easily create a sitcom about a witch or a jeannie!

Cheers,
Devman

Same with Andy G, thought he would bomb however he did a great job, have noticed though that when it goes a little past what Tommy judges "dubious"  for a 7:30pm timeslot (no matter how funny or good it is), that person generally never wins (like with Josh Lawson a couple of weeks back and his explorer one), so when Andy went down the whole Thailand Road and Ping Pong Balls, I think right then the chance of him winning was gone.

Alan Brough was good though, his WW1 bit was very reminiscent of all those old semi-bawdy English Comedies like the Carry On Movies, It Aint Half Hot Mum and etc ... was very well done for thinking on your feet ... and yeah it is escapist TV, put the brain on hold and just sit back and enjoy.

Tonights episode would have to be the best one this year, it was all really well thought out (elaborate sets, Celebrity Island etc), I hope next year is even more so like tonight (although that is a high standard to keep). Also good was that even though the show went for an extra 30mins, it didn't feel dragged out at all.

I hope it rated well, and kept the audience for Tripping Over. No doubt BS dragged some viewers though.

The ship was probably my least favourite sketch.
But overall, of all the episodes I've watched thus far, this one was certainly the best.

And I'm not surprised with the renewal. It's one of Ten's very few high rated shows.

Yes, last night's show was great, easily the best so far for me. Good to see they know who the best performers are. Hopefully they use them a bit more in the next series than they have so far.

The better stuff from TGYH is infinitely better than The Wedge, and probably the rest of the comedy the networks have done over the past 5 years. I hope it does lead to some new sit-coms with unique settings and characters, the way they're done in the UK.

Love this show! Have always loved Shane Bourne (there is a man on the sunny coast looks just like him!). Frank Woodly is so cute I want to adopt him. How funny was Hamish as the eighty year old man?! The girl in the skit is now scarred for life! The support guy (son-in-law) in the skit was laughing his head off by the end of it. I really liked them all but I think the SWAT team guy (Tony Martin is it?) was hilarious. I think they should mix it up with their guest comedians but keep bringing back one or two favourites every week. Gotta give other's a chance to show what they are made of!

I think comparing TGYH with The Wedge is a *little* much.
But I agree that this is one of Australia's finest shows. I also want to get Frontline on DVD. We had to study it for school and I never really had a chance to enjoy it much.

I know! I was looking at the girl half the time feeling sorry for her lol.

I don't really like Frank because he tries WAY too hard to be "funny". But Tony's "Renovation Rescue" line was hilarious.

I haven't had a chance to catch Frontline yet, but if you haven't seen We Can Be Heroes, do yourself a favour and get it or rent it. We had to watch it last year for English Communications and it was hilarious.

You mean because The Wedge is so crap?
It is funny though isn't it, that the people on TGYH can improvise something way funnier than the writers of the Wdge can write.

By the way, I've noticed you can get Frontline as a box set now.

I know lol. That's a little sad. But I've watched Great Comedy Classics for the first time last night (I tuned into a full episode of Are You Being Served and a bit of George and Mildred), and my god, Russell Gilbert is HORRIBLE. His sense of "humour" is like 500 years old. And BTW, he's one of the writers of The Wedge *shudders*.

Yeah, I went to HMV about two weeks ago, and I saw a complete series boxset of Frontline, but it was like $88 so I gave it a pass.

Was Tony Martin something to do with 'Frontline'? I never watched it but somehow he seems connected to it.

Hi SuziH

don't know if Tony Martin was involved with Frontline , but back in 1986 ( ugh , showing my age here ! ) he was involved with a skit comedy show called D Generation

The writers / actors included people such as Rob Sitch , Tom Gleisner , Santo Cilauro and Jane Kennedy who went on to form Working Dog Productions , producers of Frontline and currently make TGYH

They also made The Castle , The Dish  , Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures , etc

So there are past and current connections with the Frontline "team" and a shared comedy style

D Generation also included Magda Szubanski , Jane Turner ( Kath in Kath & Kim ) , Marg Downey ( Marion in K & K ) and Michael Veitch

From someone who disliked this show when it started I've come to enjoy it quite a bit. Although Tom Gleisner is still a tool! From the bits I've seen I really enjoyed Glenn Robbin's bad santa and Hamish's dirty old man. The survivor bit was quite funny as well. I may become hooked next year.

As for the d-generation didn't see it but if it were repeated would love to watch it as it sounds hilarious. I remember a friend telling me about it and a skit they did called p*** weak park.

You can get the D-Generation on DVD as well.
Yes, the guy in the qantas ad is the guy who played Martie. I think his name is Tyrel Moira.

I don't think Tony Martin is actually a part of working dog, but he appeared with Mick Molloy in an episode of Frontline.

Ahhhh, now that's all cleared up! Yes... and I do remember D-Generation and everyone you mention Dalton. Oh the memories. Loved The Castle and The Dish but absolutely hated the Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures.
Great comedy and written by great comedic writers. Unlike some we can mention... in particular the Wedge.

I don't like the aussie series much, but the guests for the US one seem really good in some cases. I want to see the George Takei episode.

After Ten's Futurama/New Simpsons double bombed last night, Ten will be replacing it with Thank God You're Here repeats from this Sunday at 6.30pm instead of wasting first run episodes of The Simpsons on that timeslot.

US version (clips provided by NBC so its all legal) of TGYH. Clips are not the full sketch, but they give us a glimpse of how bad it is anyways. lol

premiere - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYIXKVR0Es8 (superheros)
Jason Alexander: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIucjQLuGOk (star trek)
Tom Arnold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9GgVTz6v48 (resteraunt)
Monique - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKnnhO3AZOo (game show)

as much as I hate to say it (because Im not a huge fan of the show to begin with) it's not as funny as the australian show. And I feel a little let down that people like Tom Arnold and Jason Alexander don't seem to have as good improv skills as I feel they should.

If a simple format like TGYH doesn't make the grade , there is NO hope for Kath & Kim or Spicks & Specks

I think one of the problems is that the guests want to "take over" instead of giving quick , sharp replies to the actors setting the scene

Sell the concept to the UK -- it will do MUCH better !!!!!

That doesn't surprise me, as more often than not when the Americans try to copy British humour, they fall flat on their bottoms (or should I say "fannies"?).  What works in one country rarely works in another.

Its kinda cool to see an Aussie concept actually make it in The US, well its been recorded anyway. The set is cool with the walkway and stuff, its looks fresh and clean compared to the Aussie version (but The US always seem to be like that, everything always looks 'perfect' ).

The premiere one was good, with Wayne Knight (Newman), Jennifer Coolridge (Stiflers mom) and Bryan Cranston (the dad from Malcolm in the middle) as superheros, very funny    But the rest were so-so... and I thought Jason Alexander was particularly bad at improv...

Thanks for linkage though!

Seems it's going further than just the US though... see below thanks to wikipedia...

The format has been sold to FremantleMedia for worldwide distribution and has subsequently been sold for creation in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Russia, Sweden and US markets.

-The Dutch version, "Gelukkig Je Bent Er" broadcast its first episode on RTL 4 in late September 2006, followed by "Gu' ske lov du kom" on Danish TV3 a few days later.

-The German version, "Gott sei Dank... dass Sie da sind!", piloted in July 2006, premiered on November 30, 2006, in primetime on German channel ProSieben, produced by local Fremantle daughter Grundy LE, but managed only to attract a small audience.

-The Russian version of the show, "Slava Bogu, Ty Prishel" was first aired on STS channel on 24th September 2006.

-The Swedish version, "Tack gode Gud" was first aired on TV4 on 21st March 2007. It follows the same format as the Australian version and reguarly uses similar scenarios.

A pilot for the US version was shot by NBC on November 9, 2006 and is hosted by comedian David Alan Grier. It featured Wayne Knight, Bryan Cranston, Joel McHale and Jennifer Coolidge as contestants and Dave Foley as the judge with producer Rob Sitch flying across to oversee the production. It has been picked up for the 2007 season. Episodes will air starting April 9, 2007.

Guess this also explains why The Panel is only an annual show now, they don't need the cash anymore!!

That would certainly explain all the random crime show repeats. And is that World's Wildest Police Videos show still on in the US? I thought that got axed YEARS ago.

The US version of "'Thank God You're Here" premieres on Monday, however there have been some negative reviews.

"Thank God" NBC has other comedies in development

Sat Apr 7, 2007
By Barry Garron

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - There are clever moments in NBC's new improv series "Thank God You're Here," but you can get awfully restless waiting for them.

Mostly, it is because of the unpredictably hit-or-miss nature of the improv form. It nearly is impossible to be consistently funny with the first thing that comes into your head. Comedy club audiences understand and give actors leeway; TV viewers probably won't.

Adapted from a hit Australian show by "American Idol" producer FremantleMedia North America, "Thank God" has a host, a judge and four guests each week. The host, producer David Alan Grier, introduces the guest, who then goes backstage to be put in costume. The guest returns and is thrust through a door and into a scene without knowing the situation. The surprised performer always is greeted with the same line: "Thank God you're here."

The show has a two-hour premiere Monday and then a subsequent two-hour episode the following Monday before shifting to its regular 8 p.m. Wednesday slot April 18, Wayne Knight dons a white lab coat for an interview about his line of food supplements, Jennifer Coolidge becomes a beauty pageant contestant, Joel McHale is an archeologist on the brink of a great discovery and Bryan Cranston turns into an aging rock star. Other anonymous (though often convincing) actors in the scene pepper the guests with open-ended questions. After all of the guest skits, there's a scene in which all four participate.

Dave Foley, as sole judge, gives brief and unfailingly complimentary feedback after each sketch. At the end of the show, he picks one performer to get a plastic award. That's it. No donations to charity. No playing for a member of the audience. Just the plastic award.

In between skits, there are taped pieces, which Grier said were made to help guests warm up to the process. These were much funnier than the performances before the remarkably appreciative studio audience. That's not ironic. The taped pieces were edited to include only the best ad libs; the studio show has lots of lines that go thud on the stage floor.

There's a reason improv-based shows like ABC's "Sons & Daughters" and Bravo's "Significant Others" shot take after take to come up with 20 minutes or so of funny material. And even with all that, these shows failed to click with a wide audience.

There's a way to make "Thank God" better. Stop dressing the stars in costumes. Let them figure out their characters even as they ad lib their initial responses. That would add some excitement, though probably not enough to prolong the life of the series.

NBC is under a mandate to cut production costs for some of its primetime shows. "Thank God" will certainly help do that. Whether it does anything else for the peacock network is unlikely.

Cast: Host: David Alan Grier; Judge: Dave Foley.

Executive producers: Cecile Frot-Coutaz, Fax Bahr, Adam Small; Producer: David Alan Grier; Line producer: Steven Markowitz; Director: Ron de Moraes; Production designer: John Calkins; Art director: David Edwards.

I can understand where Garron is coming from. I guess we will just have to wait and see if Nielsen agrees.

I can understand why TGYH won't work in the USA.  Most of their "comedy" (and I use that term loosely, because apart from one or two shows, most are very unfunny) is scripted.  They aren't used to ad-libbing and therefore their "comedians" aren't as adept at it as they need to be for this type of show.

"Just the plastic award" ??????

Why can't the show be enjoyed for it's content  ?
( Oh , just answered my own question , at least regarding the US version )

Does it NEED donations / audience participation ?????
Would that make it any better ???

If the comedians are good enough the show will carry itself !

Well next week is Merrick Watts, Kate Langbroek, Nish and Hamish Blake. The new website is a bit better than last year, Ten are doing well with the websites this year.

http://www.tgyh.com.au

I didn't think Wednesdays show was to bad, at least I finally have something to watch at 7.30 on a Wednesday. Ten obviously needed it, it dramatically increased thier share for the night (and gives them one less slot filled with a Simpsons repeat or BB special).

I thought Kate was funny too. Didn't like Merrick's part at all. He wasn't as creative as I expected him to be. Hamish made me laugh too, but I think Kate deserved to win.

Sean won, thankfully. He is always fantastic. I just love him...he's a bloody genius, or possibly completely mad I'm not sure. lol
Eddie Ifft wasn't so bad. He did make me laugh, but they should have put him in a "non-american" situation...if that makes sense? Oh well, maybe they just wanted to ease him into it.

I hope Sean pops up in a lot more episodes too. So far Josh Lawson and Sean Micallef have been my favourites, with Sean winning by far.

Looks like Joshie boy is back on next week.

They seem to be getting the better performers more often this time.

Ross Noble was recently up here and I don't have a car anymore and only found out he was on the sunny coast a day before his show.
I watched and recorded this weeks show, have watched it twice so far, loved both Frank Woodly and Ross Noble's performances. Ross deserved to win though. Frank as a Pet Store employee/owner, was hilarious

OMGOSH OMGOSH!! my friends and i went to a TGYH recording last night... it was AWESOME!!! i laughed so much me cheeks still hurt. my friend got the tickets after registering her details online (?) a year ago.. the studios are at nunawading, took us more than an hour to get there..but it was worth it + much much more!! the tv world is so exciting!!

the performers were HAMISH, this girl from the wedge, anh do and hughsey. like always hamish's performance was the best. i won't spoil it by saying what they did, but it was a good ep!!! i'm not sure when they're going to air it on TV, but most probably within a few weeks time.

ps: if you look closely, maybe squint a little and tilt your head a bit.. you might be able to see my head on the corner of your screen (i think top right) when the camera goes to Tom. hehe. my friend was wearing a white scarf next to me. i'm the chinese kid with glasses .

if you are happy, i am happy too

Oh gods, please don't let "this girl from the wedge" be Rebel Wilson again. I think I might pluck my eyeballs out, instead of watching, if it is.

Good to see you online juugoolart! Have you been too busy to come online, no doubt working hard at Uni?!?
Nunawading is a little far for Suzi to travel from the Sunshine Coast!
Would love to see a live show

I thought she was the weakest of all the performers on the night that she performed, but she wasn't *TOO* bad. I just think she didn't have much to work with.

I thought she did REALLY well in her last appearance. She seemed a bit... bogany, but she still managed to entertain. Cal Wilson's appearance on The Wedge ads only further proves that she has a s****y sense of humour. My GOD, those ads are awful.

Yeah Fifi was awful, but she's not great at the best of times. But Bob Franklin was fantastic! Baboons! ROFLMAO!!! He's one of my favourites too and did I hear Shane mention that he has a show coming up on ABC? I hope I heard right.

Bob Franklin is in the new show The Librarians. There are some other good people in it too- Kim Gyngell, Wayne Hope. Sounds pretty good. I think its on soon-ish.

Cal Wilson was so quick last night, she deffinetely deserved to win, its a shame her lol humour dosn't come through on The Wedge (and won't from now on either unless TEN screen it in another slot later). TGYH last night was one of the best episodes ever I think and deserved its great ratings.

Seven thanks god it got show Thank God You're Here

CHANNEL 7 has snatched the rights to the Channel 10 ratings gem Thank God You're Here, with the price tag believed to be the princely sum of $1 million per episode.

The deal is a massive blow to Ten as it was one of their most popular programs, pulling an average audience of one million viewers on repeats alone earlier this year.

Seven will air a new season of the improvised comedy show next year.

The critically-acclaimed and Logie Award-winning show, masterminded by Rob Sitch, Santo Cilauro and Tom Gleisner of Working Dog Productions, wanted to switch networks to freshen up the format.

While co-creator and program judge Gleisner wouldn't be drawn on negotiations, he did admit lots of money was being thrown around by Seven and Ten.

"We could have stayed with Ten and both Seven and Ten made generous offers ... I don't think we would have gone broke staying with either,'' he said.

"It came down to a sense that this was an opportunity to refresh the show beyond merely repainting the set.''

Gleisner said one of Working Dog Productions' main concerns with returning to Ten was studio availability.

Global Studios in Melbourne, the same venue Neighbours is filmed at, was no longer available.

"It's a big production (money wise). You are building five sets a week, unlike a sitcom where you build and shoot in the same living room every week,'' he said.

"We push the envelope as far as we can with authenticity and love the costumes and props to be the real deal. We don't scrimp and we will continue going in that direction.''

City Homicide's Shane Bourne will continue to host the series, which premiered on Ten in 2006 and quickly became the most successful new show of the year with an average national audience of 1.7 million viewers.

The Working Dog Productions team rested the format this year to focus on a new venture, political satire program The Hollowmen.

With two series of the ABC1 production completed and broadcast earlier this year, Gleisner said it's time to revisit the unscripted mayhem of Thank God You're Here, whose guests included Jimeoin, Fifi Box, Merrick Watts and Shaun Micallef.

"It's great to get the show up again,'' he said.

"We have taken a year off and it's a project we are fond off ... we have a spring in our step.''

The show has been sold in countries including French Canada, Denmark, Germany and the US.

MASSIVE blow to 10. One of their highest rating shows (when not in repeats) gone. Hopefully they have flogged out the repeats so much people don't care much for it. And I thought Working Dog weren't going to do any more seasons.

I find this absolutely hilarious. Ten are absolutely f***ed, whilst 7 are bursting with hits. I hear they paid a hefty price though, outbidding the $1.0mill (an episode) from 9, and $1.1mill from ten. Rumoured new episodes could be ready to air in March 09.

I don't think she's funny, but I don't hate her either.  Also, I am positive that her physical appearance has nothing to do with it.  If she were anorexic, she'd still be unfunny.

They should have an ep where the ensemble cast are walking through the door. Ed Kavalee looks like he's all over the scene no matter who the guest is.
