Are the cables all correct? Is it an Australian electircal plug? Is it in direct sunlight?

Maybe let it cool down for a few days a try again

@Paula: Some are inbuilt, but you usually put it next to the TV

usually doesn't mean people do though

I used to sell electrical goods and the amount of people that sat their VCRs on top of the TV, followed by a lamp, and anything else they could fit there, was huge!

My set top box has died. Well, the sound has died and I have tried everything to fix it (cables/connections etc etc) so... I have sourced one and wonder if anyone has heard of this brand.

http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/hd-digital-set-top-box-pvr/

with a 5 year extended warranty

http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/PVR-five-year-extended-warranty/  which adds up to around $200. for everything including delivery.

Any comments welcome

I don't know what to think.  It seems like very good price considering what you're getting, was my first thought, but then I recalled just recently my brother in law mentioning competitive prices on electronics.  He's furnishing from scratch over a period of time.  The important thing is to google Australian results for the company and get some other opinions if you cant find them here or from other people you know.  Also, it wouldn't hurt to go to d**k Smith, Bing Lee, and Big W to see what's available from them.  They work on commission at Bing Lee so don't get pressured and ask to see what the rock bottom negotiable price is if you buy there.  As for the brand name itself, the worst thing would be to find out that it was phoney, or to buy the warranty only to find that it doesn't cover everything when you have a problem.
Not sure who else works on commission but I know the Bing Lee that I go to does.  The Good Guys very well might.  The rule of thumb for guessing, is that if the price is negotiable, or customer service is better than what you'd expect from your run of the mill store, there might be commission happening which means selling you something that you don't need is a profit for the sales person, and it can mean asking for a lower price as well.
For $200, opposed to $90, you might also want to consider that since you're buying online, it may be relevant who's paying for shipping if the thing breaks.  I don't know... I'm fairly dangerous about warranties and have only gotten one on our TV.  I know it'll bite me one day, and it already to a certain degree.  I'm not one to really know how to give advice on the warranty aspect actually.

Yeah Suzi, mine in the bedroom seems to be on the blink as well. Saw one at Coles today for $89, just forget the make but equally unknown brand to me.

I'm pretty much the same Dean. To be honest for the sake of $89 I wouldn't double the price of this with a warranty. I'm thinking Set Top's will slowly become obsolete over the next couple of years, perhaps they could keep getting cheaper even. You've got $90 up your sleeve if it does pike it in the next couple of years, just my personal opinion of course

Dean.... Thank you for your help and ideas, I have taken them on board

LB... my DVDR/player is 6 years old and is not HD

Tasman.... there you are! Thought you had gone AWoL. Thank you for your input. Yes, I was balking at the extended  warranty cost.

Thing is I have no means to get to the shops to compare prices. We only have Retravision in Beerwah and no Bing Lee at all on the coast BUT we do have JB Hi-Fi, WOW sight and sound, Harvey Norman, D ick Smith, Tandy, BigW, Target, Myer, Kmart etc etc. All over at Kawana and Maroochydore. I suppose I can ring around. I get free local calls Thanks Guys

If you have a credit card Suzi...you can order over the net or from shop, and get it delivered.

LET YOUR FINGERS DO THE WALKING

I wouldn't worry about any extra warranty ...I never do. You pay for it any way.

Yes Candy, I was getting it through the Kogan website. I want to ask them though if it needs repairs do they have a local repairer. I always check on line for comparisons and deals. This goes for kitchen appliances as well as other household electrical items.

I got my new Set Top Box today and am about to install it. It is about 1/3 the size of my old one. I went with another brand from an Internet shopping site with no extra warranty
