John Howard has not done anything extraordinary for this country except playing a politics of majority appeasement & divide and rule. His politics was much similar to Peter Costello of today for last couple of years. All he did is making Australia appear good from outside by his cosmetic effect policies and served the purpose of majority community by sending troops to Iraq to kill innocent people also making the life hell for refugees who fled their countries for better life.
We can decribe him as more sophisticated Pauline Hanson a fish and chipper lady who has wider appeal in this country then any politician of ethnic origin.
Majority of young Australians and immigrants are in ruins because of his economic and social policies and the divide between rich and poor is even becoming wider. While he is becoming richer and richer along with baby boomers the average Australian belonging to generation X & Y are struggling to survive.
He deserves a doctorate in politics, specialising in 'deception'!
He's taken politics to a new low. I think the labour party is stunned at how low this man plays the game. They've pretty much sat back for the last 7 years with their mouths wide open not knowing how to respond to the dirty games lil johnny and his band of rogues are playing.
Boy was Pauline Hanson robbed. She was shamed and jailed for her dirty politics, only to find lil johnny take on her policies on the sligh and take his popularity to a record high.
I recall only one good thing he's done for this country, and that was to make automatic firearms illegal post 'port arthur'. Averything else has been a mess and a joke.
The 'liar' furphy STEPHEN Bickell (Letters, 23/2) asserts that John Howard has "misled and deceived the Australian people countless times". As is often the case when this type of assertion is made, three tired old examples are given: · The "never-ever GST". Surely Bickell must be aware that after having made this statement, Howard went ahead and campaigned and won an election on the issue. ·"Children overboard". At its highest it appears that a public servant, Michael Scrafton, rang John Howard two days out from a federal election saying he thought there may be some doubt as to whether the children were thrown overboard and Howard didn't make any further public statement as a result of what Scrafton had said.
·"The mythical WMD". It is common ground on all sides that there was credible intelligence of the existence of the WMD, but the important point which Bickell seems unable to grasp is that Howard did not go to war primarily to help the US or even Iraq. He went to war because in his view it was in Australia's interests to do so. You can argue whether it was in fact in Australia's best interests to support the US alliance in this way, but it was Howard's view that it was and is. It is part of his job to make this sort of call. These are not what can fairly be called "lies". The mantra that Howard is a liar is too often repeated without a shred of justification beyond the sort of rubbish trotted out by Bickell. Michael A. Ryan, Kew
Means well? He's a lying, cheating, dishonest and vile little rodent that doesn't deserve to be the Prime Minister of this great country!
Time and time again he's shown that he only cares about governing for the rich. He's actually quite racist and not very intelligent either. If you hear him speak or debate it's quite clear that he's not the brightest chap.
A tragic is all he is and will ever be. The last 10 years has been a blight on this country!

Unfortunately these are the minimum requirements to serve as a PM of Australia for a decade, but if you scan the attributes of sitting members of Parliament they would satisfy these requirements without much difficulty!!
By and large the majority of politicians are crooks. But not all. From what I have seen of the more prominent MP's, I think the following people have shown to have integrity and a level of respect for the Australian public: Simon Crean (ALP), Bob Brown (GR), Julia Guillard (ALP), Natasha Stott-Despoja (DEM), Kerry Nettle (GR). I don't mind Kevin Rudd but have reservations about his close ties to his Christian faith and whether this would influence his political attitudes to certain issues.
gee's i would've taken Natasha Stott-Despoja (DEM) & Bob Brown (GR) ..right off that list ! agree , that Simon Crean (ALP) does sound highly respected by quite a large number of people ( except from his own party ! )
i reckon that Bob Brown(GR) is a bit of a nutter myself ... and from what i've noticed, this is even more backed up by the constant stream of pisstakes and baggings recieved from the general public and radio host's ! & Natasha (DEM) is just far too fake i reckon.

Interesting you say that, because I think there are many people that think this way. The major parties, the coalition in particular like to brand him as a nutter for their own political purposes. Do you have any evidence of lies, hypocracy or deceit by Bob Brown? I think we're all too willing to believe what the media tells us without questioning it or finding out the truth for ourselves.
I think they ridicule Bob Brown and try to brand him a "tree hugging hippie" because he's an easy target as a green. He's a doctor. He's probably more intelligent than anyone else in Parliament (definitely in the Coalition) and speaks well, I haven't seen any of this "luny" behaviour that he gets accused of.
Haven't seen Natasha in action that much since she was toppled as (stand-in) leader of the Democrats. But I have no reason at this stage to dislike her.
As a State MP, Bob Brown introduced many private member’s initiatives. Some succeeded, others not - regrettably, his 1987 bill to ban semi-automatic guns was howled down by both Liberal and Labor members.
Other private member’s initiatives included Freedom of Information, Death with Dignity, lowering parliamentary salaries, gay law reform, banning the battery-hen industry, and nuclear free Tasmania.
In 1989 Bob led a 5-Greens parliamentary team which held the balance of power with the Labor Government. During this time The Greens: - saved 25 schools from closure, instigated Local Employment Initiatives which have created more than 1000 jobs in depressed areas - doubled the size of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area to 1.4 million hectares - created the Douglas Apsley National Park - supported tough Labor fiscal measures to recover from the debts of the previous Liberal regime.
Bob was elected to the Senate in 1996, and re-elected in 2001. He has introduced bills for constitutional reform, forest protection, to block radioactive waste dumping, to ban mandatory sentencing, and greenhouse abatement.
hey , i make my own personal decisions ( what am i 5 ? ) i said all the other opinions i've heard only backed it up even further ! ( we must all be seeing/hearing things then ) and yes, most media spin a bit of BS or blow it out of proportion - but some can also open ones eyes to even more facts/figures . i also did'nt say there was lying, hypocracy or deceit involved !
as for this doctor thing, doctors and other proffessionals can be good at what they do and with releveant knowledge/understanding of things to take them there, but they can be quite stupid in other areas as well, just look at alot of the professors out there, the Judges, etc etc . if anything, these people are the first to lose touch of reality of the outside world ! (if they were such an allrounder of being so smart - they'd never lose this fact , even if they only hang around their top end mates ) ..looks like they have to be told ,or reminded
I know many people think he's nuts but I haven't seen any behaviour for me to reach this conclusion. That's why I asked have you.
I agree that being a doctor (or any other high prestige qualification) doesn't automatically make you a well-rounded individual. Amongst politicians, judges I believe are the most out-of-touch people.
I just did a story for my local radio (ABC Canberra) on this issue... I put it to the people (vox pop) here is a piece of my transcript. I guess my conclusion would be although opinion varied, most people (other than the educated upper echelons with a personal stake in his leadership) just regurgitate what they have been fed over the past ten years.
What are your thoughts on John Howard’s performance as PM over the past ten years?// I mean, I think that most people who have any money, who have any property, who are investors are much better off now than they were ten years ago when John Howard was elected// His policy on guns and the fact that he stopped automatic weapons from being imported in to Australia, I thought that was very, very good// I think John Howard has diminished Australia in the eyes of the international community. He has rewritten some of the historic things that we have taken for granted, and I think that has lead to Australia being seen in a different light by many people in other parts of the world// I regret that we have sort of been grouped in with warmongers// leading a government that has really presided over a period of great economic success for Australia over the last decade, that’s his great achievement// I believe in helping overseas when there’s tragedies, but get Australia right first.
