1954 April 12 - Bill Haley and His Comets record "Rock Around the Clock" in New York City for Decca Records. May 10 - "Rock Around the Clock" released as the b-side to "Thirteen Women (and Only One Man in Town)". The song is only a moderate success until it is featured in the film Blackboard Jungle the next year. July 5 - Elvis Presley has his first commercial recording session at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. He sang That's All Right (Mama) and Blue Moon of Kentucky.

- Stalin died...a little too late for the thousands of deaths he was allegedly responsible for
- Watson and Crick identify the molecular structure of DNA thereby paving the way for hundreds of cop shows
- Tenzing Norgay & Edmund Hillary climb that bloody great mountain only to have to turn around and climb down again

- Princess Liz is crowned Queen (she must be bored witless with it all by now)
- Korean war ends...paving the way for a TV series that ran 3 times longer than the actual war

1949 My grandfather finally is allowed home after the war, and discharged from the army. He had signed up in 1938 when it looked like we were going to war. He had five kids, fought in Africa, New Guinea and Borneo. |
