How is the weather today where you are/live? It is humid and very threatening here on the Sunshine Coast. Around 30 degrees Celcius. Our summer started here weeks ago, less than one month into Spring.

Wow SuzieH, you're going for a record number of new threads! I would love to live in Queenslad, for the humid, stormy weather. Its my favorite! I also love a stedy drizzle, just hard enough to make a nice pitter patter on the tin roof aaaaall day. But, living in the dryest state, I don't get to hear much of that, or experience spectacular storms.

As I write this, it is sunny, blue sky with quite a bit of white cloud around, and around 23 degrees.

Very boring weather indeed!

We've had a warm, partly overcast day. The big dark clouds are forming in the distance now so we could be in for some heavy rain tonight.

Lawnbowler takes his weather very seriously!

It is raining here at present. In my personal rain gauge I received 4 inches of rain in October! Everything is jumping out of the ground, I love it. If it is possible, today is more humid than yesterday. It is so warm, expected to reach 30c today after an overnight of 20. Clearing rain today, more rain tomorrow and storms with thunder and lightning on Monday and Tuesday.

After taking precautions, unplugging things, taking the TV antenna connection out of the wall etc etc... there were no more lightning strikes and very little rain! Murphy's Law. It must be close to 100% humidity here, no joke, at the moment. During spring and summer we frequently reach 100% humidity, you can see the water droplets in the air. It's 3 showers a day weather.

I used to live on the Florida coast in the US and I really miss that 100% humidity and pouring buckets of rain despite having no clouds on the rare occasion, and I miss the thuderstorms too but when I visit any such place I actually just want to stay indoors where there's an air conditioner.

Got to love the 2 degrees with at 98% humidity too.  I don't know how if it gets that cold up there but the water in the air packs a whallop when it comes to heat transfer.  10 degrees with humidity feels like 2 degrees without it.

It stormed here all night last night. I got up at 3:30am to pull plugs out from the wall and unplug the TV antenna. Thunder and Lightning and at times very heavy rain. This story is about a place called Gympie which is about 75-80 minutes Nth-NW of here.

Mop-up after storm damage

16nov05

The southeast Queensland town of Gympie was mopping up after wild storms damaged homes and business premises.

The State Emergency Service (SES) reported 20 houses were flooded, along with several shops in the Gympie and Mary Valley area.

Trees were brought down over powerlines and around 14,000 homes were blacked out at the height of the storms about 6pm (AEST) yesterday, said a spokeswoman for electricity distributor Energex.

"The winds were around 70km/h and there are a lot of houses with damaged roofs," the spokeswoman said.

, I love your posts Gizmo! I am fine, no rain here. When you look on the radar go north a bit more than Beenleigh, head for Caloundra-Mooloolaba-Maroochydore-Nambour-Noosa. I can however see very black clouds south of here and the humidity is high. Storms are about, no doubt.

OMG I was running rivers at 8am this morning. Revoltingly humid here today and hot.
Even friends of mine complained about the humidity today. We didn't get the storms at all yesterday but they did wreak havoc around Brisbane. Hail and strong winds. Maroochydore, thankfully rarely gets hail (maybe 4 times in the 12 years I have been here) and the storms tend to cling to the Hinterland or out to sea.

Yesterday we had a storm cell over the Sunny (hahaha) Coast that stayed in the same position for 4 hours or so. In that time it rained buckets. Noosa received 260mm. One inch being 25.4mm that equates to over 10 inches. OMG. The thunder and Lightning was phenominal. The rain, the heaviest I have seen possibly ever. Noosa Hill slipped and caused a landslide which has closed one road for at least a week.

Stinker of a week. I have been 'glistening' madly all week. 2-3 showers a day. Revolting. Humidity so high my glasses fogged up so much I couldn't wear them to read so couldn't do close up work at all.
The lightning and wind (at times) has been phenominal. Last night was the coolest we've had all week and that was over 20 still.

A hell of a storm just whipped up the coast from the south west. It ripped through here with Maroochydore just getting the edge of it. It centred between here and Noosa. Short and swift and is now headed out to sea. There were 175 lightning strikes in the region during the storm. Before it hit the heat and humidity was almost unbearable. The worth we've had since October. A southerly ripped through with it bringing some much welcome relief.

Well, the weather of late has been hot and humid and somedays almost unbearable.
yesterday evening after sunset clouds moved in, a very cool northerly sprang up, thunderstorms formed off the beaches and we had 2 inches of rain overnight. This morning the sun is out so guess how humid it is now. One thing the Sunshine Coast does not lack is water. We must have the best rainfall in this little spot. No floods just a few inches of rain every week. Our water supply dam is 85% full!

What a dissapointment, it reached all of 30 degrees, and hardly any wind! No blue sky either. I guess its good news for the CFS though...

BOM Qld have finally started to post "real temperatures", IE the actual heat you feel, rather than the temperature in the shade in a controlled white box!

http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ65214.shtml

no doubt they have it for other states as well.

Since the 1st of January we have had at least 5 inches of rain in my backyard. There has been some savage Lightning and thunder. Yesterday a lightning bolt struck very close to home and caused the second blackout since moving to this address. It happened at 3:10pm (I had just looked at the clock when BANG!) and lasted over 3 hours. I had Chinese Take-away, friends and my son had 'Subway' with vouchers. When we got home at 10 to 7 the electricity was back on. I enjoyed my Asian Take-away heated a little in the micro-wave which was back in working order by then.
I have not seen rain as consistently heavy as this ever. Must be the wet season!
Guess how bad the humidity is Paula???
The Temperature is not expected to go above 30 degrees which is nice. The wind is going to go from SE/SW this morning to NE this afternoon and staying that way all week (Dammit) I love my southerlies, they keep me going.

I wish I had AC to miss! I have fans (pedestal) one in every room, two in lounge/living area and two in my bedroom. It has been that hot through Christmas/New Year that they've all been going non-stop. When the blackout hit I thought I was going to keel over!

it is a wee bit warm here lately ... I have had to resort to going for my daily walk at 5:00am in the dark - i'm worried i'm gonna walk into the river instead of around it - i need one of those little hats with the lights on

...thank the good lord for air-conditioning - apparently it is already 38 outside my house right now (9:30 in the morning) according to the thermometer on my outside wall

Temperature 24.6°C, Humidity 88%, gentle breeze from the East-SouthEast. Light cloud cover. I am not even feeling the humidity. Rarely does the Sunny Coast get up to 40, very rarely! I love the weather where I live, 99% of the time.

That's right rub it in Suzi...43.7°C here right now...and I keep thinking of the poor folks who live in Ceduna or Coober Pedy (way way way north of Adelaide - right in the middle of nowhere) as it's normally about 5-8°C hotter up there.  Then again...I find once it gets to 40 extra degrees really don't make that much difference.  To quote Robin Williams "It's Hot.  Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn Hot"

Hey Devman...where's my smilie for melting in a puddle of sweat? I guess this one'll have to do but it really doesn't capture the subtle nuances of my feelings right now

Oh I couldn't agree more Paula...I can't cope with humidity at all...I love Port Douglas in FNQ (my favourite place in Aus I reckon) but I can only go in the dead of winter and even then I reckon I have about one third the energy I do anywhere else on the planet.  Just enough to hold a beer and watch the pretty fishies

After being locked in the house all day yesterday to keep cool we decided to go to the beach at about 9:00pm...just to get outside mainly and figured a stroll on the hard sand with the water lapping at our feet would be at least semi-comfortable.

Bit hard to stroll along the beach when the entire population of the city is trying to do the same thing!  I have never seen so many people at the beach in my entire life - reminded me of those horrid European beaches which are 1 metre wide and squeeze thousands of people in so that you're sitting on top of strangers.  There were people EVERYWHERE...in the water, on the sand, on the jetties, on the foreshore.

All that teeming, sweating humanity

We tried 3 different beaches then gave up and went back to the air-conditioning.

Will be quite pleased to see the end of this particular heat wave

Cheers, BSquared

Maybe in summer but winter is constant sunshine ..summer is our rainy season

In brisbane about 28 degrees overcast

Agree about the humidity if it was not for a/c no one could sleep in brisbane during the summer.

Bridgetown looks nice about now

I think I love all but about 50 odd days of the year here on the Sunshine Coast. Although it is wet in summer, as fajo said, it's our wet season, it is warm enough to still enjoy swimming or the outdoors to a degree as long as it's not teaming with rain or hail. Some people near the Maroochy River even get to swim down their streets at high tide in the wet season!! I survive without aircon as do many others but we'd all die if we didn't have fans, for sure. School is about to go back (tomorrow) and as we all know up here, that is time for the rains to start, especially at the precise time that school is getting out in the afternoon, just to make parents lives harder and drench the students. I am glad those days are over for me.

Our "cool" change seems to have arrived, but there is a bushfire burning south of us and the smoke is visible, so it's impossible to open the windows as yet.  It is driving my cat nuts; she's yowling like a feral.  She alerted me to the smoke with her noise.

It is now blowing a gale here (east of the city)...and there's lightening all over the place...and the SES base just up the road from me must be expecting a big night as all the trucks are out and the volunteers are pouring in

but it is getting a little cooler

hope the folks on KI are ok though

About 7 years ago I went to a lovely shaded beach area with my adult daughter. I covered up when I felt myself getting too warm and we were only there for a couple of hours. When we were not in the water we were sitting on the sand under the shade of some overhanging trees. I had sunburn for 3 weeks. I could not lay down, I slept sitting up. I wore as little as possible and could not stand ANYTHING on my shoulders. I was sick. I ended up with shingles and the worst blistering of my life. Needless to say, I now dodge the sun like the plague. 10 minutes tops in the garden or hanging out washing is enough for me to actually change colour.

Now to the weather...
Hottest     32.6°C     Lee Point, NT
Coldest     4.1°C     Liawenee, TAS
Windiest     NE 32kt     Wilsons Promontory, VIC
Wettest     92.2mm     Wyndham Ap, WA

currently here: 26.2 @ 81% humidity. Very slight breeze coming from the SE at 2kt

I don't burn quite as bad, but I have had an awful sunburn experience, though, once again not quite as bad as yours..

I went to the Big Day Out here in Melbourne in 1996, (the year Bjork, Offspring and Ministry played) and as usual it was a stinking hot day. We took sunscreen and there were ppl walking round the whole day with big containers of it, giving out squirts to people. We thought we were well covered.

However, that night / the next day we discovered that we'd gotten bad sunburn along the part of our hairlines on top of our heads!

Yeah it was sore and hurt, and all that.. but the worst bit was how all the skin dried up and flaked off... in huge chunks that had to be pulled through your hair.. that looked like Terminal Dandruff.

We had a small cyclone off the coast here about 10 days ago. We had around 8 inches of rain during that time. The seas were huge. Last Friday evening before sunset I went out for petrol. The sea off Mooloolaba, Alex Headland and Maroochydore was very very scary and fierce. The waves were huge, The ocean had heaps of white water and the rocks on the coastline were exposed from the pounding surf. No-one was in the Ocean, thank goodness.
Here is a news report on the conditions of the beaches after the storms.

Storms threaten coastlines
By Andrew Fraser and Brendan O'Keefe
March 11, 2006

THE seachange phenomenon is threatening the health of coastlines, prompting experts to warn that much of the new housing built near beaches will go under water in a big storm.
The properties most at risk from landslides and rising sea levels caused by a major storm were in Noosa on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay in northern NSW, Narrabeen on Sydney's northern beaches and Glenelg in South Australia.

Geoff Withycombe, chairman of the Surfrider Foundation coastal lobby group, said councils in these areas had made development decisions based on land patterns over the past 30 to 50 years, but coastal habitats were dynamic and likely to change over a longer time period.

"Some councils have looked at their land and seen that's the way it's been for as long as they can remember, but your average sand dune and the area around it changes quite dramatically over a century or so," he said.

"There are a lot of towns where the local council has allowed developments too close to the dunes, and they will eventually get washed away.

"Governments will have to spend a lot of money to get this right, otherwise a lot of the country will have rock walls instead of beaches."

The risks were exposed last weekend and this week when storms verging on cyclone intensity lashed southern Queensland and northern NSW from Fraser Island to near Coffs Harbour.

Major damage was recorded to the main beach at Noosa, while at Duranbah, a beach on the Queensland-NSW border at Tweed Heads, surfers had to negotiate a 3m drop to reach the water after 4m waves hammered the beach.

At Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, waves pounded the shore to the extent that rocks were exposed.

Sunshine Coast resident Lauren Buster said the beach had been steadily eroded in recent years and that last week's storms cut back the beach even more.

"It's sad -- there used to be a lot of sand, but now it's pretty rocky," she said.

During the storms, the average wave height off the Queensland coast was recorded by the Environment Protection Agency at 5m, although several individual waves were above the 10m mark, including one 17m monster.

Griffith University Centre for Coastal Management director Roger Tomlinson said the storms were of a size that was recorded every year or two, and he warned that the east coast was overdue for a big storm.

"We suffered some damage with these storms, but a major storm would be far worse," Dr Tomlinson said.

"The problem is not only that we've got a lot more people living on the coast now than we used to, but a lot of the development is too close to the water," he said.

"Most of these developments have been put there during the good times, when there's been plenty of sand.

"But when we do get a big storm -- and it's a case of when, not if -- then a lot of the coast will be devastated."

Local councils are examining new technology that allows the sand on beaches to be replenished from underwater sand at sea, a change from the current practice of pumping the sand from other places on the beach.

Couldn't agree more Fajo! Humidity is so draining. Lived with daylight slavings until 12 years ago upon moving to the Sunny Coast. Don't particularly like DS and don't ever want to live with it ever again. Beautiful bright shiny day here today.

Noooooo! It is a long long way north of here. I am only 70 minutes north of Brizvegas. But having said that we have had decent cloud cover for at least 2 days and some strong wind gusts. Saturday and Sunday were pretty damned hot and uncomfortable, today is cooler but humid. I really feel for those people affected by the Cyclone but we will all be affected as the devastation of Sugar Cane crops and Banana Plantations (the biggest in Australia) is felt. Get your bananas now folks, especially those of us who live in Qld. The price will skyrocket where we are ABLE to buy them. People have lost their livelihoods. Some people who had Banana crops say it will take a year or more to recover and other's will never recover. So sad.

Now this is affecting us here on the Sunny Coast.

Wati skirts Queensland coast
March 24, 2006 - 10:17AM

Big waves and heavy seas are expected to hit the central and southern Queensland coasts this weekend as Cyclone Wati continues to skirt the coastline.

At 6am (AEST), category three Wati was 630km north-east of Sandy Cape on Fraser Island and heading south-east at 14kph, parallel to the south-east coast.

Tony Wedd from the Bureau of Meteorology's Tropical Cyclone warning centre said it was unlikely that Wati, which has winds of up to 200kph near its centre, would change course and head towards land.

"The prognosis is that it won't move closer to the coast and will just move off to the south-east," Mr Wedd said.

"But as it does so, it will continue to generate fairly large waves which will impact on the central and southern Queensland coasts, particularly the Capricornia coast today and then more the southern Queensland coast over the next couple of days."

Mr Wedd said the main threat will be to beach areas where there will be large waves and heavy seas this weekend.

"Along the Queensland coast, I think the most we'll see is strong winds to gales in the coastal waters and overland. I don't think the winds will get high enough to do any damage whatsoever."

The Hervey Bay City Council was holding a meeting today with emergency services and police to discuss evacuation plans if the cyclone does threaten Fraser Island, off the south-east Queensland coast.

Hervey Bay Mayor Ted Sorensen said it was important for the island to be prepared.

"We had a meeting with some of the parks and wildlife people on Fraser Island and they were just asking if they had to evacuate Fraser Island," Mr Sorenson told ABC radio today.

"So we are just making sure we are prepared for this type of thing."

No way!
The experts reckon it will stay out to sea. We have been pretty lucky here in SE Qld since we moved here 12 plus years ago. Apparently cyclones are normal for all of the Queensland Coast. We had one a few weeks ago where we received about 10 inches of rain and very blustery weather. The seas and waves were phenominal and very scary.
Lord Howe Island is in danger of Wati right now apparently.

Brutal in Spring AND Summer, Fajo? I only find a tiny bit of Summer hard to take. I love this time of year, right now it is perfect. I lived in NSW for all but the last 12 and a bit years of my 50 year life and hated summers and winters in NSW. I will only ever live on the coast. I was born and lived for 26 years in inland NSW and the weather there was, and still is, very hard to take. Too extreme for my liking. Where I live is much easier for me to take than dry 40 degree heat like NSW, Vic and SA suffers every summer. Today has been a beautiful bright, very pleasant Autumn day here in Maroochy.

SA records new rainfall lows
June has been drier than usual in South Australia with some parts of the state experiencing the lowest rainfall on record.

The Bureau of Meteorology says record lows have been recorded at Cleve, Lucindale, Williamstown and Echunga, where only three millimetres fell.

That compares to an average June rainfall of 112 millimetres.

Adelaide has had its third-driest June on record.

Cool to cold everyday.

14 degres at midday is a top day during winter.

12 degres is normal.

8 to 10 degres at midday is cold.

We actually had some decent rain here last Friday.

It was the first time it rain the whole day since I did arrive here in December. We practically had no rain worth to speak off in the last six months.

Today... same as yesterday and the day before. Beautiful clear cloudless sky and 23 degrees. Supposed to be 21 tomorrow. We had rain a couple of weeks ago for one week. We don't need any immediately, yet. The gardens are thriving and everything is lush and green. No frosts here as we are to close to sea level.

Hot winter days forecast for south Qld

With winter temperatures at record highs, a spike in daytime temperatures across most of Queensland's southern districts is expected this week.

The Weather Bureau says northerly winds have pushed daytime temperatures about four degrees above normal.

Thursday's temperature is expected to reach 30 degrees.

Forecaster Craig Mitchell says it is unusual for this time of year.

"Overnight temperatures are going to be warming up a bit as well, but the fact we've got dry air and clear skies ... means inland centres away from the coastal parts will be still reasonably cool," he said.

"Keep a blanket or two handy, but during the course of the day, t-shirts and shorts."

We have had virtually NO winter this year. This summer is shaping up to be a doozy.

Banana growers fear another cyclone
Sunday Aug 20 13:03 AEST

Banana growers fear the multi-million dollar industry in north Queensland may never recover if the region is battered by cyclones in successive seasons.

Growers in the Innisfail and Tully regions have voiced concern over the future of the industry should crops be destroyed by another vicious storm so soon after Cyclone Larry tore through the region.

Category five Larry decimated banana and sugarcane crops, destroyed houses and demolished rainforest in north Queensland when it roared across the coast on March 20 this year.

Banana grower Tony Camuglia, who runs Fresh Yellow Bananas with business partner Angelo Russo at Boogan, about 10 km south of Innisfail, said he doubted whether growers could endure any more heartbreak.

"It's the last thing we need to have," Mr Camuglia said.

"If we get one (cyclone or big storm) at the Christmas break that would be the end of the show here. But having said that, we're a resilient lot and we have a passion for what we do.

"We won't see any money from this crop until at least March. That's 12 months without an income."

A handful of banana farmers in north Queensland are believed to have left the industry in the aftermath of Larry.

Australian Banana Growers' Council president Patrick Leahy said many growers in the region continued to carry the psychological scars left by Larry.

Mr Leahy, who runs a farm at Tully, about 50 km south of Innisfail, said it had been difficult to rebound from such a forceful blow.

"One minute you've got a beautiful crop, one that you can make some money from, and 20 minutes later the entire crop is flattened and on the ground," he said.

"It was pretty devastating."

Mr Leahy said consumers, who had been paying up to $15 a kg for bananas in supermarkets, could expect to see both an increase in the availability of the fruit and a slight drop in price the middle of next month.

But Mr Leahy warned his crop's maiden production would be at around 10 per cent of its usual output.

Bags are already being placed over banana bunches but Mr Leahy and Mr Camuglia are both concerned over a possible shortage of staff.

They fear regular staff will not return for the busy season and the industry may have to rely upon backpackers and overseas workers to fill their banana quotas.

Mr Camuglia's packing shed was empty last week.

In a good season it sorts up to 6,000 boxes a week and usually has around 25 people working in it, he said.

Mr Leahy said he had 12 people currently employed but usually needed more than 30 to operate during the season.

North Queensland bananas comprise around 90 per cent of the national crop.

If this meteorologists report is correct:

Quoted Text
National heatwave warning for next week:

October 07, 2006 09:35pm

Australia's southern and eastern states should prepare for a heatwave next week, meteorologists said today.

Temperatures will soar into the 30s in Western Australia early in the week, especially along the west and south coasts, forecaster Weatherzone said today in a statement.

South Australia will bear the brunt of the scorching conditions on Wednesday, with temperatures climbing into the low 40s, it said.

The heatwave will move across to New South Wales and Victoria on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures in the low to mid 30s expected, Weatherzone said.

Meteorologist Matt Pearce said the heat had been building over the Pilbara in recent weeks, with mid-40s temperatures.

“Northwesterly winds will then drag this hot air down across the southern and eastern states next week,” he said.

“It is possible that some high temperature records will be broken, especially in South Australia on Wednesday and NSW on Thursday.”

Then we best all brace ourselves for a little taste of what is to come in Summer ... also just for the record these are the Temps in October we are looking to beat this coming week (click thumbnail):

Similar here in Melbourne:

Temperature       35.4°C
Dew Point      -3.4°C
Relative Humidity      8%
Wind Speed      14.8km/h (8.0kt)
Wind Gusts      31.5km/h (17.0kt)
Wind Direction      WSW
Pressure      1014.0hPa
Rain Since 9AM      0.0mm

1.5 celsius to go and we break our 36.9 celsius record for October set in 1914 (you guys in Adelaide are not far off your October 1987 record either of 39 celsius).

Also I am with you on the hayfever metre Paula, I ended up pulling the pin on working today, I was out in Point Cook up on the Roof of Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre and this North Wind was blowing stuff everywhere, combinded with the heat off the roof reflection, the wind and the pollen around I was gone (my breathing was shot).

It is generally windy like this just before the Melbourne Show and during it like it has been, however by this time it has usually dropped off (with the work I do I notice these things), so yeah it is lasting way longer this year.

Also let us not forget the Dust Storms of February 1983:

Quoted Text
In 1982-83, El Nińo brought exceptionally dry conditions to almost all of eastern Australia, and in Victoria’s Mallee and northern Wimmera 1982 was the driest or second driest year on record. As vegetation dried off late in 1982, the topsoil was loosened, ready to be blown away by any reasonably strong wind. By late summer there had already been numerous small dust-storms in northwestern Victoria.

Late on the morning of 8 February 1983 a strong, but dry, cold front began crossing Victoria, preceded by hot, gusty northerly winds. The loose topsoil in the Mallee and Wimmera was quickly picked up by the wind, and as the front moved east, the soil collected into a large cloud oriented along the line of a cool change. At Horsham, in western Victoria, raised dust could be seen by 11am; by noon it had obscured the sky.

In Melbourne, the temperature rose quickly as the north wind strengthened, and by 2:35pm it had reached 43.2°C, a record February maximum. A short time later, a spectacular reddish-brown cloud could be seen advancing on the city, reaching Melbourne just before 3pm. It was accompanied by a rapid temperature drop, and a squally wind change strong enough to uproot trees and unroof about 50 houses. Visibility plunged to100 metres, and according to witnesses “everything went black” as the storm struck.

It is now the driest it has ever been in the Victoria’s Mallee and Northern Wimmera, to the extent that they have virtually run out of water and if the winds keep up like this, we may even see a repeat of that scenerio within the next few months.

Not very far from me!

Moana clean-up after wind gusts

Emergency repairs have been made to 12 houses in Adelaide's southern suburbs which were hit by wind gusts of up to 120 kph early today.

Corrugated iron was blown 100 metres and tiles were torn from rooves at the properties, all in Shoalstone Court at Moana.

Ian Bonython from the State Emergency Service says the gusts hit after 5 am and left a damage bill of about $40,000 for the property owners.

"We've done some sandbagging, some rooves... replaced tiles, cut some [fallen] trees up and also protected some of the pergolas that are loose," he said.

Heheheheh

In the 13 and a half years I have lived in SE Queensland I have never experienced a cyclone.
A damned lot of rain when we first moved here though!
People were saying how this morning was 'freezing' and sooooo very cold. Here where I am it was apparently 7deg.C Freezing.... NOT!

A couple of weeks ago we had a very cold minimum here in SE Qld. Then last week that record was broken and we had 3. something then on Saturday night 2.3 but this morning was a corker... a minimum of 1.2c
These are record breaking temps for SE Qld. Days are glorious though but cooler than normal for this area.

It is now 4:16pm and we've had almost 2 inches/48.6mm since 9am and 10.6 in the last hour. The winds have sprung up again worst luck. The water is creeping towards my front and back doors, it's about 2 feet away both ways.    Enough now.... thanks The young man who lives in a similar flat over the front fence (our units run parallel) has flooding from his roof-ceiling in several places inside his unit. He is 19 and got no joy from his real estate.
Just worked out we've had a foot/12 inches of rain since last sunday morning. (mixed emotions)!

I could actually see bits of blue sky when I got up at 7:30am but now it is raining once more. At least the yard looks more like a swamp now and not a lake! The wind has dropped right off and it is very humid. The river is only 2 streets away from me and to say I was nervous yesterday is an understatement.

I'm rather glad I don't live up there.

We have four seasons and rarely have extreme weather.  Apart from needing a whole lotta rain, SA weather is awesome!

The last 14 years in Queensland has the the calmest and least extreme in my life. Have lived on the Central Coast NSW, Tamworth NSW and Central West NSW. Tamworth and Central West NSW were extreme imho. Summers of up to 42deg C and as low as minus 6 in winter, in central west NSW and Tamworth. Dust storms that could last for days, frosts that lasted until midday and fogs that would lift for an hour them descend again. I love where I live. First real cyclonic weather in 14 years here this past week, not too bad I reckon.

4.72 inches since Monday.

Just 2 weeks ago we were inundated and the ground was still moist from that week. This time the rain caused our unit block to become surrounded by water in one day. It has eased off now and where I live we have virtually no wind.

Weather details:

temperature
13.6°C

dew point
13.3°C

relative humidity
98%

feels like
11.5°C

wind
S 25km/h

wind gusts

pressure
1021.4hPa

fire danger
1.2 Low

rainfall since 9am/last hr
52.4mm / 2.8mm

(that's 9am wednesday to now)

My Mum in Central West NSW, says they are crying out for rain.

I will answer for LB... he is in Mandurah Perth WA, and yes LB I read where you had an earthquake of around 4.6 wasn't it?

We have had a week of wild wild weather which has slipped south or north of Maroochydore 99% of the time. I did disconnect all my electrical things each night for 3 nights running except the 'fridge. The lightning was phenominal. Some small communities were decimated. Hardly any rain to speak of though. I have an airconditioner now, which will be installed tomorrow, could of done with it today or thursday the 4th October which was 33.1c

I think we won't be as lucky in Sydney.  It seems to be a bit ominous.  While some might be at the beach others in Sydney might be shivering indoors.

Man oh man, the rain is astronomical today.  I was awoken by the loudest clap of thunder ever this morning.  It was like a bomb going off.  The house shook so much I thought we were getting aftershock from the NZ quake.

It is supposed to get to 31 here tomorrow, that's about as high as it gets here on the Sunny Coast. I came from Central West NSW originally and when it gets to 42 with a dust storm in summer and -4 with frost in winter, that's just wayyyyyy too extreme for me.

The forecast over the christmas week has changed by a degree or two here and there but basically the same.

One morning last week it was 98% humidity (before 8am) but humidity burns off as the day progresses usually. If it is 25C and above 75% humidity at 9am I switch the aircon on as I know the day will be unbearable for me. Thank goodness for my new aircon.
Today my friend Eva took us up the Sunshine Hinterland to a winery and a cheese factory at Maleny. It teamed down. I have just found that Maleny received 24mm today. Driving over/along the Blackall Range was hair raising to say the least. Bought a bottle of luscious white wine, 2 jars of jam and 3 packets of spices

I totally agree with you Paula, if there's one thing that's worse than hot weather, it's hot weather with high humidity! In high humidity sweat cannot evaporate (now that takes me back to yr 12 Human Biology) and I dont think there's anything more uncomfortable than that.

30 today little windy though

If there is no wind, even a slight breeze, there is humidity. I perspire like crazy, have all my life BUT if I have one or two of my 5 fans on I am able to cope very well. Since installing my aircon I have not felt the heat at home. The other day it was so humid outside I went outside and my glasses fogged up immediately. Now that's humid. Right now we have 95% humidity and 21C. 35KM southerly winds with 45km gusts. We have had 22mm rain since Friday morning. We had a high of 27C today. Because of the humidity I have had my aircon on all day.

Wow where are you to get so much rain?  I dont think Brisbane is as hot as Melbourne at times and I rarely notice the humidity. So far this "summer" I have only had my aircon on about three times.

You're right Bluezphere.  Brisbane doesn't get a lot of heat at all.  It just feels hotter due to the humidity.

Now in Adelaide, we get far too much heat, but because it's dry I don't notice it as much.  It's 38.7 (12% humidity) already at 10 am and I have to go visit my mother shortly.

After living in QLD for the past 14 years plus without aircon, I think at the age of 52 I deserve some comfort. My aircon is small and cools the kitchen-living room only. I keep the rest of the unit closed off. It was 99% humidity here at 8:30am today. Right now.... 89% humidity and 24.1C with a high of 26C. We've had 186.2mm Rain this month. Everything is soooo lush and green, everywhere.

Sorry Bluezphere, didn't see your question until after I posted... Maroochydore on the Sunshine (?) Coast, Queensland is where I live and absolutely love it. Best place I have every lived and I have lived in a few. Always love the coast but never go to the beach. My ex husband now lives in an eastern suburb of Melbourne and my son lives in Perth. No probs, I understand. I did the emigrate thing 7 years ago, moved up from Melbourne, I have lived in Sydney, Melboure and Adelaide, also visted Perth, Hobart and Alice Springs. I have also lived in small country towns in Victoria and NSW and I have to say, Brisbane is the best place I have ever lived. Except now with the influx of even more emigrants, the place is starting to get more and more like Sydney, Melbourne which is a great pity.

I love the way Brisbane is laid out, I love the wide open spaces that still exist between the suburbs. I live in the northern suburbs , I prefer the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast. I hope my next move will be even further North. Maroochydore is nice I do prefer inland. I spend Christmas day at Lake Baroon, I could quite happily live in Maleny or Montville.

Just as long as I can have enough space for me, my life partner and our 5 cats. 10 - 15 acres sounds about right.

Lovely area where you stayed Bluezphere! I spent a wet few hours in Maleny on Friday then over the mountain range. Although the weather was foul there were still many people out in the area and Montville looked like it does any other day, lack of parking spaces! I love where I live. Lived in Tamworth for 5 years in the 90's and hated it. 5 years was like a lifetime in pugatory, 14 years here is like..... just arrived!

There isn't wide open spaces where I live. South East. I find Brisbane quite ugly actually, it's depressing. Good place to live though.

No, I mean when I came here in 2001, Brisbane still had that laid back "she'll be right" attitude, the life pace was slower and restful. Since then with the influx of more and more people from the Eastern states, the life pace has speeded up, people are in more of a hurry. People want Brisbane to be more like Melbourne and Sydney, like pushing for longer shop trading hours, daylight saving time and I dont know the pace has speeded up.

I lived in Melbourne for most of my life and what I hate about Melbourne is when you drive from one side of the city to the other, you drive through suburbs, you can drive for 80 kilometres and only see houses, shop fronts and factories with the occational park, usually full of derros and drug addicts. Now thats depressing. Brisbane is a beautiful city.

Maybe you could organize a few mothers with young infants and a few elderly people to go and park themselves in thier Western Power offices for the day.

Oh ok
I actually think daylight saving is good though. Like I spent Christmas in Sydney, and we'd have dinner then walk out to the park or something until it got dark at 9, like the whole family/s.  In Brisbane it gets dark around 6:30, so after dinner all you really do as a family is watch tv, because you don't take little kids out in the dark. In NZ I used to get together with my friend who lived round the corner after dinner, we'd train for athletics (lol) or go and play @ the near by primary school or something. If there was no daylight savings we wouldn't have been able to go out in the evenings, and that was fun, good memories. ^^

I understand the desire to have longer days, but it just depends which way you want to go.

What I really love about Brisbane is the early morning lifestyle. I get up@5.30 am. Go for my morning walk, come home, have breakfast, wash dishes, throw in a load of washing or do some gardening, have a shower and get ready to go to work. I find it easier to do in the morning, because at the end of the day, I have no energy for such things, especially if it has been a hot humid day, all I want to do is sit in my air con and watch tv. On a hot day, you just want the early evening breezes as soon as possible so you can cool off.

When my son was a small child, it was impossible to get him to bed at 7 pm when it was still daylight outside. I have heard a lot of parents of young children complain about the same thing with DST.

Daylight saving may be ok for the Eastern states, but I hope it NEVER gets introduced in Queensland.

When I was young.....ahem..... we didn't have daylight saving in NSW then and we managed to have dinner as soon as my daddy got home (5:15 to 5:30pm) and raced outside to play afterwards. Street cricket, in our back yards or in the bare old park across the road. I hated trying to get my kids off to bed at 7-7:30 in DST because it was still damned hot and the sun was still up. Only thing I really dislike in summer in SEQ is it is daylight at 5am ish and a few of my neighbours (in particular the elderly) love to get up at 5:30am and make a racket. One old lady speaks very loudly, even to herself, and with her back door 40 feet away from my bedroom window I hear every word. Another neighbour (husband and wife) argue at 5:30-6am and their windows are about 40 feet from my bedroom one! Before I moved the oldies from the retirement village around the corner would go walking at 5am and converse loudly with each other outside my bedroom window there!

Weather here today, not much rain now but earlier on.... heaps and heaps. Buderim Mountain was shrouded in fog, mist and rain.

Where my son lives in Perth, the bush fires yesterday were very close by. He could see them from his place in Ballajura. He watched the Water dumping Helicopters. He is safe though.

Raining here in Brisbane again, raining so hard at the moment, the Story Bridge has disappeared.

Well at least my view of the story bridge from my office window has disappeared.

42.3 yesterday then about 26 today, pretty big difference over two days. Funny how I could handle 42 better than 26 though. We had 60% humidity today which is abnormally much higher than the average of around 15% or lower.

The daily maximums have been constantly 29 ish for 7 days and minimums have been 22 for 7 nights. I got my first electricity account since my airconditioner was installed last October! It has added $150 odd onto my quarterly bill. I am happy with that because I have it on sometimes for 24/7. This summer has been great for me being comfortable away from the humidity. Sleeping so well and no heat rashes

Sun's out, storm's all out to sea BTW we have had over 5 inches of rain in my back yard in the past 7 days! 3 on Saturday.

Saturday Morning's bucketing pics

I took these pics for the perusal of the landlord/Real Estate because the gutters and downpipes need attention.

I stood at my back door and took the pics of one neighbour's back yard #1 and #2 and another neighbours back yard in #3. The hanging pot closest to the camera in #2 is mine
Our bins were empty and when the water got so high my neighbour's bins flipped over

Hope you were dry inside the house, SuziH.
You would think it was in the house owners interest to fix the gutters...that much water can cause big problems.

We had fine day today and the forecast for weekend looks good too. I'm planning to spend some time at the beach

Sunny, cloudy, humid, wet, dry, hot, repeat over and over and that has been our day today. The two consistent things… hot and humid!   Queensland is no longer drought stricken

I'm loving today down here in Victoria! It's cold and rainy and windy and just lovely! Honestly, after years of this dry drought, even watching UKTV makes me cry out for green lush scenery.

Bring on the rain, please.

25C in my loungeroom. 23.3C outside. 100% humidity outside apparently. Pouring rain.   Heaps more rain coming down the coast from North-North west.  The back and front yards are like swimming pools. In 29 days we've had 381.4mm

Yes..I've been off the air, because of the storms. Had nice weekend, then all hell broke lose...everywhere is flooded, people not turning up to work, power cuts etc. Had to ring my husband (who is away in WA) last night, to ask how to open garage door without remote, as power was off, several hours, and I wasn't sure it would be on by morning....he said, "why not take his x4WD to work"...now how stupid of me not to think of that, especially as it would be better for going over the flooded roads.

Fine and warm today, with warm, strong winds and occasional light showers.
Was walking along the beach yesterday and saw my first baby turtle hatchling making it to the sea. The sea is rough and dirty, so the poor liile thing has a mammoth journey ahead.

Candy I had to look up where the Coral Isles are, because the name sounds really cool!

Qld sizzles?  Waa, waa, waa.  Try living in SA, then you'll know what hot is.

In reference to the above type of news item, this was a comment made by some friends who live in the north of Adelaide and in Renmark.  I tend to concur.

In Brisbane it was the hottest it's been in years, honestly. You walked outside, in the shade, and it was like, a heater was blasting on you, or you were wrapped in a hot blanket. It wasn't like our usual sticky humid hot, it was like, hot, I can't describe it, in the sun it was like WOAH. I liked it better than the humidity
That article is wrong it reached 42.2 degrees
How hot did it get in SA then?

It reached 39.2 on the Sunshine Coast. Now... I come originally from Central West NSW and yes it got to 42+ degree but there was no humidity. I find dry heat easier to handle. We get a day like Saturday and we still have 35-40% humidity, which is very low for us! When we have that kind of humidity we say 'it's only 40% humidity today, isn't that good!'
Today is only 26.4deg but is 71% humidity which is very draining. We in Qld can complain if we want to because it 'IS' hot for us. I would never live in Perth or Darwin, OMG it would kill me.

I can handle hot weather quite easily, we had more 40+ days than average last year and more than any other capital, with our hottest day being 45.2. It is the humidity that really kills me, 40% is considered really high here with the norm usually 20% or much lower. For me a 25 deg day with 60% humidity or higher is far worse than a 40 deg Perth day which is generally dry, almost heater like.

Well it's 35 today, sunny and 3m waves, yet another day at the beach I think.

As of today I hereby rename SA The Sunshine State...

Adelaide bakes in 75-year heatwave

It has been 75 years since Adelaide has seen such an extraordinary heat wave in Autumn and the weather bureau says there is no relief in sight.

Adelaide is bracing itself for another week of searing heat in the mid to high thirties Celsius.

If Tuesday's temperature reaches one degree more than the expected top of 34 degrees Celsius it will make nine consecutive days of more than 35C.

Duty forecaster Belinda Gibson says such temperatures have not been recorded in Adelaide since an eight-day heat wave in 1934.

"It isn't unprecedented but it's certainly been a long time since we last saw it," she said.

Ms Gibson says there is no end in sight yet to the extreme weather.

The mercury did not dip below 26C overnight and peaked at 32C at 2:00am ACDT.

Temperatures are expected to reach 40C today.

Eh?

Beaches?  We have the best; far better than Surfers (though anything is better than that hole) and better or as good as any beach anywhere in Au.  As for holiday spots, I'd rather holiday here than any other state.

Watching the 'other' show on Lifesavers.... I have to say Surfer's looks like a great beach for swimmers, as is Mooloolaba and Noosa, sometimes Maroochydore, definitely Coolum and for surfers Coollangatta, Duranbar (on the NSW-Qld border), Noosa, Alexander Headland and a few other spots on the sunny coast depending on the wind. I must say everytime I have been to Bondi in Sydney it has been revolting so I've always gone around the corner to Tamarama, even if the ocean is not great the scenery usually is.
The weather here....

Have to agree Dara, Manly is a hole as is IMHO, Bondi. Coogee and Cronulla are better beaches, IMO. Byron Bay has a huge reputation (surf wise) but not for any great reason!
