Sad to hear about his little girl, mine ran in front of a car Friday night, luckily for me it was a switched on driver whom managed to stop in time. I could have so easily been in the big fella's shoes tonight, best wishes to Phil and his family and hope the little girl recovers..

I cannot begin to imagine what the Kearns family are going through right now.  This is so sad.

Phil Kearns has been a favorite of mine since I first saw him play Rugby. He has a huge heart and obviously he and his wife have well balanced family principles. Their work for Charities and their particular area in Sydney is admirable. To be living through the nightmare of such a tragedy is, to me, unimaginable. I have said many prayers for little Andie's full recovery and the family's healing. I cried when they announced the tragedy on the news as I am sure many many others did also. Be well, Kearns Family.

I can find no news updates on Andie's condition anywhere. Is this a case of 'no news is good news'?

Andie Kearns off critical list

November 8, 2005 - 5:33PM
Andie ... aware of her surroundings.

The injured daughter of former Wallabies captain Phil Kearns is off the critical list more than two weeks after being run over in the driveway of her family's Sydney home.

Andie is still in intensive care in Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick after she was accidentally run over by her father in their driveway on October 22.

The 19-month-old, who has has extensive abdominal injuries, had previously been listed as critical but stable.

The hospital says she has now been downscaled to serious but stable and is aware of her surroundings.

"Intensive care clinical staff confirm that, over the past few days, Andie's ventilation has been reduced to enable her progressively to take over her own breathing functions," a hospital spokeswoman said.

"She has also been aware of things going on around her and able to engage with her parents."

Doctors believe Andie has no brain damage and a CAT scan has indicated the toddler did not require surgery.

The "sell mums 4wd's" fraternity could just be in for a shock once Phil gets back on deck. I would not be suprised if he starts up a campaign against them in the suburbs after this.

Just saw Phil Kearns on the morning news speaking about Andie's accident. He credits his son with calling attention to the fact Phil had just run over his daughter and says if his son hadn't called out, he would of run over her with the other tyre. he said it didn't feel like anything substantial (what he ran over) it was like a newspaper or something that size. Someone was watching out for Andie other than her big brother!

That is good news. . she is recovering. . . Phil will probably drop his
partnership with the 4x ads. . *I hope so*. . they are flammin dangerous vehicles in the hands of novice (to 4x4) drivers.

Other road users cannot see around them . .they are slow to take off in traffic. .and they are like a 'diesel fueled battering ram' on our roads.  Some in traffic are OK. . but there are now toooo many.  If they park on roadsides anywhere near a corner. . nobody can see anything past them. . just like the Kearns family have now proved.

Andie to leave hospital in days

November 18, 2005 - 4:03PM
Andie ... "She's up and walking, she's well enough to do music lessons, she's eating ..."

The injured daughter of former Wallabies captain Phil Kearns is expected to leave hospital in the next few days and will make a full recovery, her doctor says.

We were lucky, admits father Phil

January 12, 2006 - 1:37PM

Former Australian rugby union captain Phil Kearns says he wants other parents to learn from his experience of running over his young daughter in his driveway.

Kearns' daughter Andie, now aged 22 months, was released from hospital last month after she was accidentally run over by Kearns at their home in Mosman, on Sydney's north shore, on October 22.

Andie spent three weeks on a respirator at Sydney Children's Hospital and remained in a serious condition for almost a month after the accident.

Mr Kearns today launched a driveway safety campaign at Campbelltown Hospital in Sydney's south-west.

"I didn't really realise the importance of this issue until after what happened to Andie last year," Mr Kearns said.

"We were lucky to avoid a terrible tragedy.

"I am very happy to throw my support behind this (safety) calendar, to make people more aware of the dangers young children can face, even at home."

The calendar contains information about road safety, child dangers in driveways and practical tips to avoid tragedies.
