When we hit the report abuse link, does that go to you Devman?  If so do you see it when you log in as easily as a private message or is it in some sort of administrator interface that is harder to see... like what is easier to use?

When we see Administrator online, is that you?  Because he's stolen the cooler looking stars that go next to his name but never posts to use them.
Do you want one of us to hack in and switch the stars out in your profile and his?  Is he your boss?  Shouldn't you get a raise?

An email is sent to Devman for all new users who sign up. The abuse notification goes to both Devman and the system administration department.

We are currently getting hold of this users ISP details with a view to contacting them regarding abuse of their account.

A bit of stirring or mischievousness is fine and sometimes adds to the flavour of the moment but this person definitely has a problem and should seek professional help.

Thanks so much for the continuous heads up and feedback throughout the weekend and the events we've encountered with a certain user of the site.

As I have mentioned several times before, the onus is on me and my support team to provide a safe, friendly and usable environment for you to express yourself. We have procedures in place to deal with wally's like leonard (and his aliases). They include automatic reporting to our administration department, warnings and possible followup with the user's ISP if they severly overstep their mark, as was the case over the weekend.

It is a real credit to all of you who have posted in this thread that we have been able to easily control these sorts of hiccups. It says alot about the real quality of community we have already built up in such a short time. Each and everyone of you display a maturity and intelligence that I personally have not found in many forums myself - and I'm not just saying that because I run this one. Each morning is like visiting family and that's what a true community is all about.

Sorry about the rant - but I just wanted to let you all know that.

We are still monitoring this situation, so please let me know if you experience any troubles or unpleasant users of the site.

I posted in this dam post as well and asked what happened did you guys get Leonard? And it was taken off why? What’s your malfunction?

If you look a few posts previous to this then you will see where I did answer you Aldi even if your post disappeared you got your answer which is what you asked for. As for a malfunction, I'm not sure there is one.

I think this is something we could all remember. Including yourself, SuziH.

I've been quite surprised at behavour towards other members of this forum at times.
Just the other day a newish member politely asked if someone would modify a cut and paste and was answered with an outright NO!

Those obviously experienced at forums, would be well aware as to why some members find extensive posts of cut and pastes unsuitable .... perhaps one could take the time to highlight relevant points and next time you are asked, politely explain why you wont change your posting habits.

We all get heated in debates, but instead of snapping, dragging issues between several threads and then apologising the next day etc..... try some time out.
Step away from the keyboard when you get cross. No one has to be here.

The Leonards of this world are easy to deal with, it's the insidious natured posters that undermine any forum.

It would pay to remember that familiarity breeds contempt.
So treat each day as a new one for all, and lose the grudges or paranoia from old forums/places and don't ever think that quantity or longevity equates quality or superiority.

Anyway, this thread is giving too much attention the troll mentioned, and it will now be closed for now. Thanks to all those who have participated. 'Leonard' and all of his disguises are now being delt with via an external organisation, and we are deciding whether to proceed with further action.

In my experience trolls come in three varieties:

• The first just wants to stir an issue to liven up the debate and is seldom personal,

• The second is a regular member out to upset or defame someone they feel has upset them under their usual nic, and

• The third is the juvenile or immature adult who thinks it’s funny to insult people.

IMO, it is highly likely that trolls are mostly regular members.

The user was not blocked for expressing a viewpoint, but for the way he/she went about doing it, in addition to several personal attacks on individual members and staff.

We are preparing a report on this individual, which includes the collation of all conversations, discussions, ISP and connection details. We will then re-evaluate the situation at a time of our choosing.

You see the first as a troll? I would see it for what you describe - stimulation of the debate, perhaps drawing people out of their shell and getting them to participate. (As long as it is not done in a hurtful or disrespectful way!)

1:. . PM the 'T". . .and let them know that flamming members is not on . . and they should edit or remove the offending post/s .

2 : Don't reply in the offending thread. . it makes things worse. . (that is what they WANT!.) . .give him time to prove himself a Troll . *he will*.

3 : notify Admin or Devman . .and direct them to the problem. Be specific about what offended you.

4: Wait a couple of hours. . then  "Poof' . . offending stuff gone!. .

And yes.. poof! the problem is gone

I don't drink coffee except when I am 'out' and love a good Cuppachino. At home I drink 2 large... and I mean huge... mugs of tea every day. One first thing when I get up and Log on to the Net then another one between 3 and 5pm... in fact I have almost finished it now. The mug is 15cm deep. I lurv my tea (made in a pot) with filtered water!

It has actually given me inspiration to write my own '101 Things You Should Know About Trolls' webpage. Believe me, I know EVERYTHING about them - and that's just me love life!  

It is time re revisit this area. . Trolls should be ignored at all cost. . Admin can deal with them once he arrives. . replying is no good. . they are just useless members anyway.

Yeah same here Aussiemaddog. I'm a big fan of correctly quoting and backing up a post with fast facts available online. I think it's also only courtesy to place a complete link to an off-site article if you're quoting huge slabs. Some forums sites grab huge articles without even a mention of who wrote it, which I think is abit rude..

. .     if you turned into a Troll . . there would have to be another method of dealing with your posts . . and after some thought about the issue . .   . . I have come to an idea for a remedy to Trolls.

Admin or a Mod. . simply uses the Trolls existing posts and makes some 'alterations'. .  

Make a new  title for the post. . eg: 'The Truth About Me . ."insert name of Troll".
Then 'modify' the post to give an essay about how 'I the troll love to visit nice, fun boards and be a 'grunt'.  An essay of about 100-150 words would suffice. . so any visitor (or potential troll) can see how thier post will be treated.  The text could be 'cut & pasted'  in to make the changes quickly . . and all with the Trolls avatar and signature . (to add authenticity).

Everyone (well 99.9%) on this forum are not annoying really and their contributions to this forum are valued. We get the odd stanger in here who tries to test the boundaries and finds we are pretty well onto Trolls here and they will not be tolerated.

Remember that 'Trolls' are looking for you to reply to their insulting and belligerent posts . . so it is the height of irritation to them if you IGNORE their entries and simply step over their comments as if they have not posted.
Anything they do to escalate their tactics after that is Admins  responsibility.  

Plus you can go to your settings and block some members/posters who may annoy you or are acting troll-like. I have a couple on blocked

No prize for guessing cactus is one of the 'blocked/ignored' users. His posts are very spiteful and at times hurtful. Actually I only have one on blocked now, I used to have 2 but he and I worked out our differences. I will however block anyone who continually bags we Mods, as I believe that we have an excellent forum due to the fact that the Mods, Devman and Admin nip problems in the bud before they blow up into WWIII.

Among other things, you watch certain members and when they are losing an argument, suddenly up pops a new or inactive member to agree with them and then compliment them on their post.  A couple of posts later and they’re never heard of again until needed.  Also a couple of regular members will always play tag to get certain threads on top of the list.
