I'm currently watching The O.C. Season Two on DVD. I bought it for only $39.95 at some small DVD shop. Their prices were so incredibly cheap, and they had unbelievably cheap prices on their Xbox games too. Too bad the location of the store is pretty bad.
Couple of days ago, I watched a film I missed seeing at the cinema earlier this year, an Australian film called Three Dollars. All I can say is this is one of the best Australian films I have seen for a while(along with Little Fish). If you haven't seen Three Dollars as yet then I would recommmend it as your next DVD hire.
I just saw Coach Carter over the weekend and it was better then I though. Samual L Jackson kinda veered off with the XXX films & and Swat but he's found his way back with this film and its pleasing to see him involved in something much more plot driven with solid writing. Cool Runnings & Remember the Titans were the films that automatically came to me after watching this even though neither films have anything to do with Basketball but anywayz, if you liked those two you'll probably enjoy this one aswell.
I've watched Solaris and Of Mice and Men over the weekend.
Solaris was good. It got mixed reviews when it came out. It really can't be classified all theat much as science fiction since all the science fiction parts in it had the unshakeble stink of things that had been done before and reminded me of an episode or 2 of the original Star Trek and just a little bit of some things done in 2001. Either that or it just reminded me of the old series and small peices of the classic movie. I can see why it got mixed reviews. I think people didn't get what they expected. This is a good movie for those who are die hard drama fans to the extent of seeing films at cinemas that show more than just what's popular and well heard of. I found the end lacking a little bit. There was a lack of closure for me, in fact I wasn't even sure what I was looking for at the time becuase I wasn't sure if it was a psychological movie or a drama until after it was over and I've decided that either way there was a lack of closure and this is why I say that it's a film for die hard drama fans that don't experience the aggravation of unanswered questions. I like that in a movie sometimes but I think Solaris could have easily gone a little bit further than it did and left it more than just open ended but unfinished. At the same time though, when I watched subtitled films on SBS I often realise that I enjoy a film that I wouldn't have usually liked if I had seen it in english and I'm sure of myself that had I seen this in a differant language and been reading subtitles, for whatever strange reason of how my brain works, I would have thought Solaris was gold. Aside from the ending, the story takes an a turn that I didn't see coming and I wasn't happy with the change which is little ironic because I think the reason for this is that despite stinking of things that had already been done, it did take those things a step further with the idea behind it, and that idea involved the a problem of some charachtors in the movie not wanting to accept change in their circumstance and I was so facinated at how well some aspects of the film were done and with what was coming next, that when I did not like what came next and where it was taken I resisted defiantly blaming the movie when perhaps I could have stayed on (more) for the ride had I let myself. The ending was also one that I didn't want to accept. I think that some of the info we get in the way of a flashback comes too late to make the ending palatable, not that it was thrown in as a bad attempt to tie things together but that it was poorly timed.
I suppose that's a strange way to review a movie... give an opinion while at the same time trying to crpytic opinion about aspects of it to others who have seen it.
Three smileys for this Solaris.
Of Mice and Men was good but it hardly lived up to the imagery I had of the book. I don't know when this movie was made, but it would have to be pretty dated for me to think that it did well. It still had an emotional effect on me but I think that's just because I let it since I was watching the movie but remembering the book. It took a little to long for me to accept the George charactor as being the one I created when reading it. Lenny's charachtor was good... John Malcovich finally finds a role that he can play. I'm not a big fan of Malcovich so that's meant to be a joke but he did do a very good job with it. An aspect of what gets Lenny into trouble isn't explained in the movie as it should have been and as a result his innocence as a person is put into question with the viewer when it should not have been. That was a lot for the film to overlook. At this point in the film George's charactor becomes less selfless in his intentions that he was in the book and a key decision he is forced to make appears to be something more conveniant for him personally when in fact I felt that it was meant to be something very difficult for him and done for more for the benefit of his companion than for personal gain and I thought the film portrayed it poorly. My guess is that other's would disagree in how they interpreted the book when they read it in comparison to the film. I suppose this one just goes to show that it's foolish to try and take a book like that and try to make a film about it. They seem to get screwed up too often... great books that is, when people try to put them on film.
3 smileys for Of Mice And Men, but only because of where it came from:
Thanks David AKA Dean, A Night at the Roxbury... haven't seen it yet but my adult son has and loved it 4 out of 5 smilies
The Neverending Story (original) This movie is timeless and so imaginative I love it 4 out of 5 smilies
Dances with Wolves (Full Version) Wonderful, sweeping movie and Kevin Costner has always been a favorite of mine, even when some of his movies have bombed 5 out of 5 smilies for me, David
Kingdom of Heaven Historically accurate, wonderful, panoramic & splendid. This movie has War, blood, guts, religion, romance, historical figures and wonderful costumes and make-up. This is one of my all time favorite movies.
I just watched the whole (one and only) season of Firefly and thought it was freakin' awesome! Great characters, great concept - shame on Fox for cancelling it after only one season. And just saw Serenity at the flix and it blew me away - highly recommended to all. Shame it's winding up here in two days. Can hardly wait until the Joss Whedon Wonder Woman movie - hope he uses Inara from Firefly..shwing! What a babe![face=Arial][/face]
The Nanny Series 1 - i have watched all 24 episodes and they were so funny can't wait for series 2 to be released fran drescher is so funny also the rest of the nanny cast i recommend this to any nanny fan
Alright!!! Margaret has shown up. I haven't seen Kingdom of heaven though.

What, what, say what huh? Serenity winding up in two days? WHAT!? WHY? Other movies stay in the cinemas for way longer.
Location: In bed with my notebook ..... no peeking!

Oh God! I love Solaris! The first time I saw it, I was enraptured and it immediately shot into my top 10. I know it could be better and at times it seems flat etc - but that in itself is part of it's appeal. And who couldn't lust over the sound of Clooney narrating Thomas' poem, Death Shall Have No Dominion. I absolutely love Sci Fi - but this was something extra special. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0307479/
Over the weekend I watched a quirky movie called "Bed & Breakfast" which critiques have proclaimed as the USA's version of Shaun Of The Dead. It's not quite funny enough for me to forgive it all of it's sins - but it did crack a laugh or two out of me. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0350774/
I also watched Angels In America - which is a HBO mini series about the mid 80's and AIDS. It's quite unusual, and I'm not sure if I can say it was good - but it's still knocking about in my noggin', so it must have had something. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318997/
I must watch Solaris. I mean if I loved Battle Field Earth I must be easy pleased! Firefly and Serenity are No No's in my home as my 21 yr old son was soooo ticked that Fox cancelled Buffy and Angel and Joss Whedon came up with Firefly and it was picked up by Fox at the expense of Angel he has never forgiven Joss and therefore his post Angel stuff is banned. I may watch Firefly when and if my son goes away for a holiday... and Serenity bombed at the box office and that is why the film is closing early. It is an acquired taste, although I love that genre of film.
I havn't got a DVD player yet. I'm hoping to get one for Christmas. But the last video watched was Sleepless in Seattle. It wasn't a hire one it was one that my sister taped several years ago from the TV
The music score is far-out. Jamie Lee Curtis has a strong, commanding presence to be believable as a hapless victim and Donald Pleasance's role is fruitless, yet he got top credit billing.
