I have two budgies. One is almost 8 years old and the other is under a year old. I had three budgies but my other male died at aged 3 in March this year. The eldest one is called Sunshine and she is a Lutino (Yellow with red eyes and a white cheek) the other is Puddin' and he is blue (I have discovered blue one's are not too bright). I grew up with 3 large aviaries of birds in our family back yard. I owned a white rabbit (NSW is allowed to have them) as did one of my sisters before me, we had a Collie dog called Lassie, Lisa who was a dachshund, a pheasant, 2 turtles and at one time a miniature turtle named Juliette (who lived in the house in an aquarium). A bantam chicken named Henny Penny adopted me and lived in our carport on a shelf and laid an egg every few days for me. We lived on a large block of land! I now live in a Townhouse where birds and fish are the only animals we are allowed to have.

Wow SuziH- you sound like you have/have had some unusual pets!
I have 4 pugs, 2 pekingese and 2 cats!
But I have had mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, budgies and peach faced parrots. The peach faced parrots were vicious and got out of their cage all the time and would lay in wait to bite our toes when we were children- hence I now have a phobia about birds!!
The pics are the 4 pugs (Missy Tim Tam, Ellie Paddlepop, Princess Pollywaffle and Dudley Donut) and the 'fluffy' one is one of the Pekingese- Hugo Boss!

meratcha, do you show them? Or breed them? They are absolutely fabulous. I would love a pekingese. I love them all. My adult daughter has 2 Ratties called Chi and Osiris and 2 black cats named Sam and Xavier. The ratties have a large multi level aviary inside. One cat is very very curious of the rats and the other one is frightened of them! |

Used to do both, but showing interfered too much with my lifestyle of sleeping in on the weekends! Only our girl pekingese, (Nikki Bokkers), is 'whole' (as in not desexed) at the moment, and one day we will have another litter with her (hard to time it right for the school holidays- you need at least 4-5 weeks after they are born to care for them). Hugo Boss (the one pictured) is from her last litter.

I love that the one cat is frightened of them! (Good for the ratties!) I have never had rats, but I have heard that they are much better and much less smelly than mice! |

I can't think of a name for my dragon. I started out thinking that he would need a cuddly name like Muffin, but it just didnt work. His name changes every week or so. He has been Pippi, Jack, Unas, and now is Crickey monster. Quoted from another thread.

If you want a lap dog- I recommend a Pekingese or a Pug
Do Pekingese snuffle like Pugs? I hate that sound. I don't think I could buy a snuffly dog. Or a drooling dog. A neighbour dropped off a boxer pup for me to fall in love with but I know that they drool a lot. |

Awww Gorgeous Peke! I love them, but haven't been able to bring myself to having another one. Anyway, I have a couple of moggy's and just this week adopted a female Maltese. Owners didn't want her anymore. She's a sweet little thing, but has fairly bad tear staining. Any feedback on how best to handle this? I find myself wanting to clean her eyes all the time. |

How about Prickle, wasn't that a name of one of the characters in Gumby? Whatever you call it, it is way cute. I think I love all animals that can be kept as pets. I also love 99% of wild animals. |

Yes, they are snuffly and snorty! So, no, a Peke would be no good for you Jade! They don't drool, though. I love Boxers and other drooly dogs, BUT I could never have one because of the drool!- just too messy! Love the dragon names, too! |

I know that you can get products specifically for covering/removing tear staining, but have no idea how effective they are. People with white dogs show them without their tear staining, so they must use *something* that works! Perhaps google it & see what you come up with? It might be a 'trial and error' process until you find something that works. Good luck! |

most dogs get out of tear staining once they get older.........we have two Maltese terriers that had stains as puppies, put its no problem now....... i used to run a dog grooming business and my best advise to customers was keep the eyes clean on a daily basis with a weakened solution of baby oil.........it works pretty well....... |

We're down to 10 birds now...one died and we gave a couple away to friends. One of the friends was a young man who was severely injured in a nasty rock throwing incident earlier this year. It might be therapeutic for the guy, at least we hope so. |

I have two dogs: Gypsy: a Heeler/Siberian Husky Cross, who is now 13 years old, she has been through 3 operations in the last 2 years to remove tumors (all benign, one was a huge spindle cell one the size of a tennis ball), she is doing real well now though, you would hardly think she was 13. Rose: a Heeler Cross (with what I am not sure), she is 6 years old and well what can I say, both are my family really (yeah they are fur kids, I admit it). So as you look at the screen, it is Rose in the back, and Gypsy to the front: |

Love your Dogs, Aussiemaddog. My daughter had a Blue Heeler/kelpie cross (looked more like a heeler whereas his brother looked like a kelpie). Some moron left the back gate open and both dogs got out (her EX-BF owned the other dog) and Jack chased his brother across a main road and was scuttled by a courier van, dying a few days later. Almost 2 years old and so beautiful and obedient. Now she has cats and rats. |

( did have another kitten in 2003 - not related) ..but it either got pinched or hit . it was the nicest kitten i've seen to date lol ( trying not to sound biased here ) it was grey and had white markings down middle of it's head ..like a border collie ! ( so what did we do ! .... we called it border catty ) ok , pehaps not then ..errr, why dont the image codes here do what their suppose to do , like other sites i attend ? EDIT : tried putting in image using "image icon above" ...still came up with address showing ..what the ? is this differant to other sites or what ? |

I had a fishy named "Fishy." It died last week and I was sad. Yesterday I got two new fishys and I named them "Pretty Fishy" and "Pretty Fishy". If I really need to be specific about them then one's male and one's female so the same name isn't a big deal. Their pronounced differantly though, one is "Pretty Fishy" and the other one is "Pretty Fishy". This is about the best I can do as far as pets go while renting. |

Fish and I should never live in the same home. I tend to kill them with kindness (feed them too much). I had a beautiful bug eyed gold fish once named 'Black velvet'. I have 3 budgies. Sunshine, the girl, is now over 8 years old. The other two, Puddin' and Sweetie are boys and are around 1 year old. Yes, renting a place puts limits on your hobbies and pets. |

It's quite possible I killed mine feeding it too much as well. He lived in a big glass vase on our dinner table and I used to feed him tiny, tiny pieces of meat when we ate. I went and read about his sypmtoms and there's various things that cause the same things another of which was also possible.
It was a Siamese fighting fish. Now I've bought a male and female Siamese fighting fish and the guy said they'de work out in the same tank together. That wasn't the case though. I think he's must be particularly aggressive. Now I have Pretty Fishy in a big tank and Pretty Fishy in a glass vase accross the room.
I didn't like seeing Fishy go. His last movement was pretty much twitching in my hand. Hard to tell with fish, but I think he died while we actually watching. My wife cryed. |

Just give these fish what the pet store has for them. Animals don't cook their food before they eat it and we really shouldn't feed any animal what meat we are eating. When I used to suppliment feed a family of magpies in breeding season it was only ever lean raw steak and/or the leanest mince. Even bread for wild birds is not recommended.
Talk about holding your pet while they die... I have had 3 birds die in my hands, litterally while I was holding them. One was a pee wee I raised from a cottonball sized bit of fluff to 12 weeks until she died in my hand. She just stretched to her full body length like in a spasm then died. I wept over her for an hour. The next one (a budgie) wasn't quite so dramatic but the last one, Horrie, a year ago at age 3, was too ill before I realised he was sick and so I force fed him with an eye dropper and he had a heart attack and died in my hand. I did beak to mouth resuscitation and used just one finger to massage his chest. Then I sat with him in my hand until rigor mortis set in. I then wrapped him in my best wash cloth and bubble wrap then in a plastic chinese food container, sealed it, wrote an epitaph on it, buried him in a large pot under a birds nest plant. W I just know I am going to be a mess when my 'Sunshine' dies, at age 8 she is now living on borrowed time although given good health and a good life she could live to 13 or more. |

I almost had 3 cats this morning. While mine was snoring away with me on the bed, 2 others managed to sneak into the house, eat all her food, poop in her litter box and raid the rubbish bin. We have no idea why our cat didn't alert us to them and aren't sure how they even got in. The only time they might have snuck in was when we went out in the backyard at 2 am to investigate the feral antics of some drunken hoons over our back fence. I didn't notice them until after 5 am. |

I know pet budgies can live up to and even more than 10 years of age. Sunshine, my eldest, had been sleeping more and playing less in these past 6 to 8 months. Three weeks ago Sunshine passed away overnight. When I uncovered her one tuesday morning she was laying on her tummy on the floor of the cage she shared with Puddin' and Sweetie (two young males). She looked like she was asleep, I howled for half a day. I still miss her antics and her funny little personality. I had a 'sad' day yesterday thinking about her. She was Eight and a half when she died. Every morning she would be waiting for me to open the door to the cage for the day, she couldn't wait to get out and play and scratch her head on the gum twigs that are secured to the top of the cage. If the younger birds got too boisterous for her I locked them in the cage while leaving her out. I had another 3 year old girl who picked on Sunshine and gave her a rough time, I took her to the pet store last year and swapped her for a juvenile male. No-one hurt my baby girl. I will choose another Lutino (yellow with red eyes) girl later on this year. I might call this one Tweety!

My mum won't let us keep birds she says it's cruel :S I have 2 cats they are my babies and 2 fish which are my sisters. They are several months old which shocked us as our last fish lasted all of a few days. Fish don't do well with us either We also have 2 sea snails with the fish. I used to have a dog called Jessie and A dog called norman and a dog called sparky. Norman got put down Best german shepard, I was a baby, he let me ride on him, took care of me, so good! Jessie we gave away when we moved to USA She used to visit me at school Sparky was too naughty so he went. |

The Maltese Terrier in my piccy is Jesse, the love of our life. We got her in 1996 when she was 5 weeks old, too young to leave her mother, really. In 1998 she was diagnosed with Colonitus and the vet said she would not have a long life. Happily we are proving him wrong. Sadly she is starting to go downhill now, she is losing so much hair she has a coat on all the time now, or she would freeze. Her back legs are stiffening up and she cannot jump anymore. But, she enjoys life and is not in pain, so the vet says, so we are just enjoying so much her twilight years. Gee, I have tears in my eyes just typing this..............just gotta go and give her a cuddle.... |

My mum won't let us keep birds she says it's cruel :S
it's no more cruel than keeping a fish in a bowl 24/7. Our galah was born in captivity and it'd be cruel to release her. She was "chatting" to our 2 resident magpies this morning. Paula had them singing (the magpies) too. |

By the way, for those of you who don't like drool... don't you know that its good for ya skin?! I'm thinking of bottling it and selling it on ebay ROTFPML |

I have a 7 year old cat named Bobcat.
I kept telling my friend as a joke that I wanted a bobcat for my birthday so that I could do some earthmoving on the farm.
On the evening of my birthday, he turns up on my door step with a six weeks old cat. He tells me...
Here is a cat named Bob.
So I called him Bobcat.
I had fishes for 20 years. I used to have two 4 foot tanks sitting side by side in the living room. One tank had tropical fishes. The other had African cichlids.
Some of my fishes lived five to six years. Keeping fishes is a serious business and not for everyone. Their water need to be clean with the correct PH level. Temperature of the water need to be right and constant.
Once you have done all that If you buy different fishes, some are more territorial than some others. They will fight and kill each other. The solution is to know what sort of fish to buy.
Gold Fishes are the easiest to keep and they thrive in an outside pond. But watch out for the birds who will try to get them.
I don't believe in fish's bowls. They should be ban. There is no way that a fish can be happy in a bowl. And unless you change its water every 2 or 3 days, the fish will die. And if you fill it with tap water, it will probably die from the chlorine in the water.

I am staying at my daughter's until I find a suitable rental (done) and to mind her animals and house while she is interstate. She has two adult desexed male black cats and two adult very much male charcoal rats. Sam the eldest cat at 11 is my shadow. He knows my routine now and knows when it's my shower time just before bed. He follows me to bed and lays next to me as content as could be. His problem is he has Burmese in him and they are VERY vocal. He talks to me. He rubs up against the book I may be reading in bed and makes certain noises. If I don't 'answer' him he gets cross and has a few more things to say. If he is roused on he goes away and sulks, ignoring your calls for an hour or more. He believes he is my daughters husband/mate/protector/boss. He misses her but loves his 'Ganma' or should that be Mother-in-law. She will be back in 8 days or so and that can't come quickly enough because OMG rats are so much work. They have a huge 3 level aviary to live in. Made by a carpenter to my daughter's specifications. Every day you clean the cage out (all levels) sweeping all the lucerne pellets and rattie poo into a garbage bag, renewing the 'rattie rags' they lay on and play with, their food and drink containers cleaned and refilled and have a little play/cuddle with the ratties in the early evening. One cat is intrigued by them and the other is afraid of them! I got them out to have a play on the armchair with me the other night and Chi the more adventurous on disappeared down inside the recliner. I gathered up Osiris, put him back in the cage very confused and tried to get Chi out of the chair without squishing him. He did the same thing when he was young and slim but now they are quite big. I upended the chair, turned it on it's side and had to grab him and litterally pull him out a very tight sqeeze Needless to say when I checked him for injuries and made sure he was okay, back in the cage he went too. A very short play time. Minding my 4 grandsons has been a real adventure, and yet another 8 days to go! |

I have a boston terrier called buffy. I saw this breed on foxtel and knew that was the kind of dog I wanted. She is very loyal and friendly. She got into the chook cage the other day and started chasing the chooks. This is what they look like http://au.search.yahoo.com/sea.....lv1-mdp&ei=UTF-8 |

Quoted from Just John
I have two dogs: Gypsy: a Heeler/Siberian Husky Cross, who is now 13 years old, she has been through 3 operations in the last 2 years to remove tumors (all benign, one was a huge spindle cell one the size of a tennis ball), she is doing real well now though, you would hardly think she was 13. Rose: a Heeler Cross (with what I am not sure), she is 6 years old and well what can I say, both are my family really (yeah they are fur kids, I admit it). So as you look at the screen, it is Rose in the back, and Gypsy to the front:
Sadly I report that I now have only one dog ... Rose my youngest developed an immune disease called SLE Lupus and I had to put her peacefully to sleep just over a month ago (on Feb 01st), it was a really quick onset and then end (took a month from start of treatment to try and save her until the end). This was her about 2 weeks before it happened (on her 7th birthday): |

So sorry to hear of your loss also, John. I recently spent 6 weeks with my daughter and her pets. I realised how much I would miss her beautiful cats once I left to live in my own place, which I have now done. I was laying with her eldest cat, Sam who is over 10 years of age, one night readying myself for sleep when told him he was never to 'leave' us. Her other cat, Xavier is around 7. It is akin to losing a family member, even a child, which is exactly what it is. I love the pics of the Boston Terriers TPO. How cute, especially as puppies.

At the moment we have a turtle, a rat, 2 cats, a maltese terrier, a small corgi/cattle dog and fish. But in the last 2 years I can add ducks, chickens, 3 other dogs, 2 other cats, a blue cattle dog, a cow, a pig and a snake! Would give ANYTHING to own a ferret tho! |

Your rats, cats and even maltese terrier would not get along very well with a ferret if you had one MaraTa. We love ferrets in my family also but in Queensland you cannot own them, or rabbits. My uncle in Melbourne used to breed Ferrets, Pigeons and English Bull Terriers. Not sure if that was all at the same time though |

Hi all!
i have 2 cats, both different breeds. One is a White run of the mill tabby cat, eats normally, looks a healthy size.
The other is an Orange Selkirk Rex and its seems to have ballooned out into a monster ever since it was fully grown, now 4 1/2 years old. It just keeps piling on the weight. They both eat roughly the same amounts although sometimes it seems the Orange one has more of an appetite. Always seems to be on the look out for food, the other one is more content after a feed.
I know as the owner i play a big role in the heatlh of the cats, lately i have been aware of this and been more mindfull of the amount of food given out. I love both of them and want them to have as long a life as they possibly can.
Can anyone give me any tips/suggestions to reduce the weight problem in the Orange cat?
types of food ? amount ? frequency?
any help would be great thanks Jimmy |

I know several people who have a similar problem to you. Two cats, same amount of food, exercise etc but one is at least 2-3 kilos heavier than the other. One is food driven and will eat as much as you will give it and lick the bowl clean, not ever walking away leaving food in their bowl. One trick is if the slimmer cat leaves any food in their bowl, cover it and put it away so the 'fat cat' can't steal it. There is an excellent product you can buy from Vets and some pet stores that is a health science diet which will do both cats good. Give the fat cat a spoonful/handful less food than the tabby when you feed them. Only feed them twice a day. Never give them 'piles' of food, everytime you serve their dinner be mindful of how small their stomach really is (especially compared to our's). Your fat cat is four and a half so you must be doing something very right. Put it down to middle aged spread |

It wouldn't hurt to see a Vet re the orange Rex; just to make sure there's no medical reason for the weight gain. |

hi you might have solved the problem by now but try to feed the cats seperately and add more veggies and bran rice to the orange cats bowl. but as suggested get orange checked by vet. please keep us updated. |

We have a new galah (bred in captivity) that is apparently only 1 month old. The naming procedure is underway. Gertie, the previous encumbent, flew the coop some time ago, so we need a new exciting name for this one. Rob suggested 'Fang' |

That is young Paula. Is it on solids? 'Fang' is out I would hope. Is it able to be sexed yet? Next door's galah who is 6 and has a huge vocabulary and repertoire is named 'Cheech'. How about a name off Star Trek? Take a pic for us Paula. |

I have a lovely 9 month old kitten and she's currently preggers. I want to keep at least one of the babies. My kitten's really introverted, and she doesn't like being petted TOO much (she walks away when she's had enough), although she really likes having her chin/neck stroked. She also likes sleeping on my shoes (even though we bought her a cat bed). |

we have the best pets in the world guinea pigs! though am so ticked off that there are no guinea pig savvy vets here in south australia! have lost so many to bad vets, when training to be a vet they only learn about guinea pigs as lab animals. and most people feel guinea pigs are only the kids pet why waste money one vets? or guinea pigs are cheap to buy so why waste money on vets? luckily i have found a guinea pig forum site from the UK and these people are amazing. they even have a vet who is willing to email vets all over the world. so i love our guinea piggies just wish vets knew more! |

CAts are so awesome. We have 17 lovebirds, possibly another 2 in the nesting box; it's a bit hard to tell unless you disturb the mother and then you feel her ire. |
