Oh I was absolutely drooooling over the new Nano. But Apple has the nack of getting you to buy one of their products, then bringing out something even more drool-worthy! (courtesy Apple.com.au) |

shame that minis were pulled off the market the same day the nanos were released. bought myself a 2gb black nano and haven't looked back granted only having a shuffle before it's considered pretty much an upgrade for me! |

I'm sticking with my old (2nd gen?) 15g iPod...to think it is very outdated now yet only had it (from new) 13 months! Anyway, I love it...I love having ALL my music with me whenever I want AND having a swag of new podcasts every day...not gonna upgrade until this one dies on me...I'd feel that I was betraying it if I just dumped it for a newer, sexier model |

From what I've been reading in the paper - DONT. A lot of them are faulty, and people are having a very hard time getting Apple to honour the warranty. |

Apple are going to make an announcement on the 31st about a next gen. iPod, rumour has it. The video capable one's are not good as the videos have trouble with synchronisation. |

I used to have an iPod clickwheel 20GB (4th generation, mono display). It was broken and I received a replacement under AppleCare Protection Plan. Then, I sold it. After 3 months without iPod I bought an iPod shuffle. It's suits me better. I know I have less features in iPod shuffle, but using iPod shuffle as USB memory device is actually a lot easier than using an iPod when I need to transfer files between Mac and PC. And I worry less when it gets scratched. |

Apple have launched an investigation after British newspaper The Mail on Sunday claimed that some of its Chinese iPod factories force employees to work long hours in squalid conditions.
Steve Jobs' now prestigious brand has said it will not tolerate its supplier code-of-conduct being broken, and vowed to fully investigate the claims. The Mail's article accused the factories of enforcing 15-hour shifts and paying as little as £27 (around US$50) per month.
The worst factories alledgedly house and employ 100 people per dormitory and ban outsiders. Another, said to specialise in production of the iPod Shuffle pays only £54 (around US$100) per month with half of that earned spent on accomodation and food within the complex.
A brief glance at Apple's own supplier code-of-conduct reveals that the company are indeed very concerned about the rights of their labourers, but is this enough? Apple say 60 hours of work per-week is the maximum expected, yet this still adds up to 10-a-day based on the allowed 6 day working week.
Despite human rights and health and safety precautions the document does not specify a minimum wage for the workers.
Apple have reacted to the claims, and are investigating but surely it is entirely down to Apple to ensure that the measures they put in place are not breached in the first place. Until the investigation is complete, it is still unknown whether the paper's claims were true or not.
And that's why I chose Creative for my portable music! Well actually it was because I didn't want to buy an MP3 player from a failed computer company and I wanted correct video playback |

French bill could put iPod on shaky groundFrench lawmakers approved in a final vote on Friday a controversial law that threatens to break open the exclusive music format behind the Apple iPod. Both the Senate and the National Assembly, France's lower house, voted in favour of the online copyright bill, which some analysts say could cause Apple Computer to pull its iTunes music store and iPod players from France. The vote was the final legislative step before the bill becomes law - barring the success of a last-ditch constitutional challenge filed last week by the opposition Socialists. The new law seeks to force companies such as Apple and Sony Corp to make their music players and online stores compatible with the download sites and players of rivals. Currently, songs bought on iTunes can be played only on iPods, and an iPod can't play downloads from other stores that rival the extensive iTunes music catalogue from major artists and labels - such as Sony's Connect and Napster. Apple described the copyright bill as "state-sponsored piracy" earlier this year, but a company spokesman was not immediately available to comment on Friday's vote. In a statement issued after lawmakers hashed out the final compromise text last week, Apple said it hoped the market would be left to decide "which music players and online music stores are offered to consumers" - suggesting that the legislation could affect its presence in France. The final compromise asserts that companies should share the required technical data with any rival that wants to offer compatible music players and online stores, but it tones down many of the tougher measures backed by lower-house lawmakers early on. It also maintains a loophole introduced by senators, which could allow California-based Apple and others to dodge the data-sharing demands by striking new deals with record labels and artists. http://www.smh.com.au/news/tec.....1/1151174406493.html

Just a question- I have an Ipod Nano and is it just me or do they freeze A LOT?! It always freezes on me, which sucks, because then i can't bring it to school. Through all the freezes and problems I've had with it, i still couldn't live without my ipod. I take it everywhere! |

I currently have a Zen that plays music only, but I'm looking forward to my Zune, which has an FM tuner, wireless transfer, picture viewing and video and music playback. I'd never buy an iPod, they are way too overhyped. |

Apple announced updates to its iPod, iPod nano and iPod shuffle products at the "It's Showtime" media event today. new iPod, brighter, more storage spaceThe revamped fifth-generation iPod features a 60 percent brighter display and up to 20 hours battery life. Video playback time is much better now, too. Instead of two hours playback time, the new iPod lasts for up to three and a half hours. The iPod is still available in white or black, and sports a 2.5-inch display. The 30GB model is priced at US$249, and the 80GB model - which replaced the 60GB version - is $349. Both are available now. new iPod nano in 5 colours, up to 8GB Apple also introduced the all-new iPod nano with a new aluminum body, an incredible 24 hours of battery life and more than twice the music capacity for the same price as the previous generation. The new iPod nano features Apple’s innovative Click Wheel and an even smaller, thinner and lighter design available in silver, pink, green, blue and black. Like the revamped fifth-generation iPod, it also includes the new earbuds. The 2GB model is available in silver, and costs US$149. The 4GB model is available in all of the colors except black. It costs US$199. A new 8GB model is also available in black for US$249. All are available now. new iPod shuffle, new shape, with a clip The new iPod shuffle, now the world’s smallest digital music player with Apple’s pioneering shuffle feature that lets music fans serve up a continuous mix of their favorite songs anywhere they go. Nearly half the size of the original, the new iPod shuffle is just half a cubic inch in volume, weighs just half an ounce and features a stunning all-new aluminum design and a built-in clip which makes it the most wearable iPod ever. The new iPod shuffle contains one gigabyte of flash memory which holds up to 240 songs, and is more affordable than ever at just US$79. The new iPod shuffle will be available in October. |

Take a closer look at iPod pricing.
iPod shuffle will be only one model, 1GB US$79 or AU$ 119 (41.2 x 27.3 x 10.5 mm; 15 g)
iPod nano have 3 models, 2GB for US$149/AU$219(silver only), 4GB for US$199/AU$299 (choice of silver, green, blue and pink), 8GB for US$249/AU$380 (black only). (90 x 40 x 6.5 mm; 40 g)
iPod nano have 2 models, 30GB for US$249/AU$380, 80GB for US$349/AU$499. Both models available in black and white. (30GB model: 103.5 x 61.8 x 11 mm; 136 g) (80GB model: 103.5 x 61.8 x 14 mm; 157 g)
That's right, the 8GB iPod nano (black colour) costs the same as 30GB iPod. |

The iPod is seriously an inferior product when compared to Creative, Toshiba, Samsung and maybe iRiver products, it was doing a better job than the others when it was first introduced and now is just a pricy fashion accessory!
Nice to know that the brand spanking new ipod can't match the video life of my Creative Zen Vision M, the new colours of the Nano are nice though, good to have some choice although they are the same colours that the Zen Vision M was released in! The Creative Zen V / Zen V Plus is a much better alternative to the Nano, and does come with different colour accents depending on storage size and it about the size a packet of tic tak's!
Anyone wetting themselves waiting for Microsofts (built by Toshiba) Zune, don't get into to much of a dither, seriously not worth it....
PS. Can you use images as wallpaper on the iPod now, or am I still alone there? |

Yeah there are alot of mp3 players out there that are better and cheaper then the Ipod and your best bet is getting one overseas for a real bargain. I only managed to get myself a nano only because it was $140 at the time and I must admit I'm anjoying it. Thats just about the only good thing you'll get out of me about Apple.

IMO iPods are more like fashion items than real MP3 players. While it does the job, there are many competitors that are faster, smarter and cheaper, and come with a wealth more features.
The Zune is looking promising. While it has all the features of the iPod, it also has an FM tuner and supports more formats, as well as the excellent wireless transfer feature. There's also a heap more that I can't remember at the moment. |

Does anyone have an mp3/mp4 player other than an iPod and is it any good? I'm particularly interested in those clone players for sale on eBay that are more than 70% cheaper than an iPod (Nano) and have more functionality (FM Tuner, Video)? Also the seller is in Hong Kong, anyone bought one of these?
I know you get what you pay for when you buy cheap but I wonder if clone mp3 players are as good as clone PCs (which are just as good as the much more expensive brand name PCs IMOH)?
Secondly, does anyone have an FM Transmitter (brand/cost?) for their mp3 player and does it work well with your car stereo? I'd be interested to know if the clone versions are as good as the brand name versions with these as well as there's a big price difference. |

Got my new Creative Vision M today
I have the same model as Norman and it's fantastic! Outclases the iPod in just about every area. I think the only thing the iPod has going for it is that accessories are a dime a dozen, but Creative just launched a series of speaker docks for their Zen products that users have been longing for. One even includes X-Fi which is able to restore the quality lost in high compression files types (ie MP3). I don't even have to burn DVD's anymore I just copy the files and smack it into the dock sitting next to my TV! The Creative Zen V / V Plus also seems like a better alternative than the iPod Nano for those looking for a smaller package. The thing this tiny!! |

I think I posted this comparison elsewhere http://dapreview.net/zune_vs_ipod_vs_zvm.htmlBottom lineZuneNot at this time. Zune targets the same demographic that would be satisfied with the iPod and does but does not offer a compelling alternative. Nice GUI, but it's not enough iPodYes, for people that want a player that "just works" and those who are willing to invest in DRM-wrapped media from iTunes Media Store ZVMYes, for people who want the same kind of functionality as the iPod Video but with more features. We like the ability to play videos from the web (Xvid/Divx) without having to transcode |

sorry norman I never use real since it's one big pack o' bloatware! I don't think the player supports any realmedia (Convert Video in the toolbox does not list the filetypes). You can try converting to another format or check out the forums @ http://www.epizenter.net . It more than likely someone has tried doing the same |

xvid is part of the GNU project. One day the GNU HURD kernel will replace all Windows machines everywhere and the world will then be a utopian society filled with bliss and love.
There's another software that's part of the GNU project and ported to windows called mplayer.
Okay, really I just wanted to crap on a bit about my OS being better than everyone elses, but if mplayer has the same functionality in Windows it's a good tool for what your asking about and is compiled from the same source code. That doesn't mean it's compiled with all the same options though. Anyhow, on my machine it spits out two binaries, Mplayer and Mencoder and with them, it doesn't matter what the source video is as long as it can play it, and mencoder can do loads of video and audio types. If there's a good GUI encoder that uses them as tools it's worth looking into. |

There you go smart a**. http://www.google.com.au/searc.....tnG=Search&meta=You can take the advice or leave it, I don't really care. Edit: Oh you mean the utopian society... sorry, I thought you were intelligent and would realise that I couldn't possibly be serious. GNU kernel isn't ready and doesn't have a release date. It is a bootable system and supported by the Debian project though. Google is your friend. |

I'm not anti-Microsoft. I like to take the piss out of them. I do dislike corporate politics, this includes Apple by nature... in case you can't make the leap of logic yourself, and in the case where there is an alternative I don't mind promoting it. I'm not pro Google. I posted a freaking link... so what?... you don't know how to google? is that your problem?
Perhaps you shouldn't come in and take something off topic in the first place Einstein. My initial post had it's tangent but certainly still kept the discussion where it was when I was done... before you jumped in. Do you need me to link again to the same google search so you can make that association between my post and the general direction of the thread before you came at me? Will that help? |

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, has discovered the first virus designed to infect iPod portable media players. The virus, which has been named Podloso, is a proof of concept program which does not pose a real threat.
The virus is a file which can be launched and run on an iPod. It should be stressed that in order for the virus to function, Linux has to be installed on the iPod. If the virus is installed on the iPod by the user, the virus then installs itself to the folder which contains program demo versions. Podloso cannot be launched automatically without user involvement.
Once launched, the virus scans the device’s hard disk and infects all executable .elf format files. Any attempt to launch these files will cause the virus to display a message on the screen which says "You are infected with Oslo the first iPodLinux Virus".
Podloso is a typical proof of concept virus, which is created in order to demonstrate that it is possible to infect a specific platform. It does not have a malicious payload and is unable to spread on its own: a user has to save the virus to the iPod for the device to become infected.
Lets just recap iPod + Linux = Virus |
