What is your favourite movie of all time and why?
I have several favourites myself. I could not choose between them if I tried but to start the ball rolling I would have to say the first and third installments of the "Lord of the Rings" movies. The reason being apart from the whole concept, is the whole experience with the spectacular scenes and the computer generated graphics for example the War Elephants.

Only one?  Waaaagghh!

One of my favourites is Wings of Desire, it's such a beautiful, sad film, as much about Berlin as the characters in it  However, I'd be pushed to name my vary favourite.

My favourite LotR film is Fellowship, but I change my mind about this constantly anyway. It used to be Two Towers.

I'm really getting into some of the old-school classics from the 1970's lately. I've only touched the surface of the 70's genre, but already I absolutely love classics such as Chinatown, Network, and Terms Of Endearment (albeit early 80's for that one).

OK, I'm a chick and it's compulsary to love Terms.

Maybe I should of asked... "what's your favourite movie in each of these catagories"...
Sci-Fi , Fantasy , Drama , Action , Comedy , Romance , Action/Comedy , Action/Drama, Animated , Docu/Drama , Black Comedy , Horror , Thriller , Suspense , .... are there any more catagories? Lol.
I must say I am a sucker for Kevin Costner's films especially 'Dances with Wolves' and 'Field of Dreams' even the 'Postman' rates with me. Saw 'Love actually' recently with Hugh Grant in it and absolutely loved the whole movie. It made me laugh and made me cry but essentially put a big smile on my face. My favourite genres are Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Thriller, Horror and Action/Drama.
Only watched 'Pulp Fiction' for the first time last year and was blown away, absolutely loved it. There are others that are Cult Classics like 'Fight Club' and 'Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' even 'Snatch' that I also loved.  Keep it up people, give me your thoughts on your favourites.

OMG hoss001, you brought back memories. Jane never looked so good. I fell in love with the Angel and the shell thingy where she and whoever got down and dirty. Oh my, I would love to see it again. I suppose compared to what we are used to these days it would seem a little unimaginative, a bit like the original Star Trek TV show sets, or Lost In Space sets and robot! But no one could ever come close to Jane in the gear she (almost) wore except maybe Ursula Andress in a fur bikini in what ever that movie was!

Hahaha SuziH - I think Barbarella holds its own against most sci-fi movies today. There were some very original ideas, which inspired movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange right up to Austin Powers! Plus it inspired Andy Warhol and The Beatles Sgt Peppers. Great costumes and great sets!
And yeah, I remember that Ursula Andress movie with the fur bikini. Were you thinking of that dinosaur movie? Does anyone else kow the name of it? When people mention Ursula Andress and 'bikini' in the same sentence they almost always are talking about Honey Ryder in Dr. No! Sorry Halle Berry, but that scene will always be the original and the best!

Going to hit a couple of categories:

Children/Family (got three kids under 7... that's virtually all we see at the moment!): The Incredibles and Finding Nemo.

Satire: The Princess Bride.

Loved all the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

General tear-jerkers: Forrest Gump (Life is like a box of chocolates).

Feel-good: Blast From the Past.

Comedy: Meet the Parents (the first one was the best one).

Razzie Award winners: (These awards are given to the worst voted movies of the year, the day before the Academy Awards) The Jazz Singer (Neil Diamond version) Hey, what can I say. I liked the songs by Neil Diamond!

Sci-fi: Star Trek: First Contact.

Yes it was Lawnbowler. In IMDB it has in brackets after the title... 'she who must be obeyed'. Hmmm

"Repo Man" has got to be up there for me: Made in 1984 and starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton, it combines car repossession, sci-fi, car chases and bizarre humour in a cult movie with a great theme tune by Iggy Pop.

It's also one of those rare movies that has a certain "atmosphere" about it - hard to describe but you know it when you see it.

Probably of all time, Donnie Darko for me (along with the Mad World song). And ones I keep watching this year are the Butterfly Effect and Run Lola Run.

Best movie I've seen at the cinemas this year: Mysterious Skin.

I watched it Klatz, and I didn't 'get it' it was a little too far out there for me. I did however love Emilio's brother Charlie's movie that came out around the same time called 'Wraith'. In latter years I have come to understand end enjoy 'way out there' movies that I once would have shunned, like 'Donny Darko', 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Fight Club'. I loved them all.
I have to say I don't much enjoy anything Trey Parker and Matt Stone make apart from South Park. Their movies don't appeal to me. I enjoyed the American Pie Movies , much much more than I imagined I would (the Dad cracks me up) although I don't think I want to see the latest one called 'Band Camp'.

Can't pick just one either...depends on the mood a bit

The movies I watch again and again are a pretty eclectic collection... Fargo, Love and Other Catastrophes, Jumpin Jack Flash, LadyHawke

For pure escapism I LOVE disaster movies...old school ones like Towering Inferno and Poseiden adventure (original) or adventure movies like the Indiana Jones movies (all of them really) or the first Mummy

I also have a thing for Cary Grant movies

Cheers, BSquared

I know I am cheating a bit but the closest SINGLE number one movie is the ENTIRE Lord of the Rings Trilogy(O.K.) I am cheating BIG TIME,but it is too hard to separate them.Sometimes just one scene will make me cry or give me goosebumps.Any body out there remember a movie called The Boy Who Could Fly,terrible special effects, but what a story if you have seen it and understand what it is saying it has to be in the top of all time

Number One would be:

The Fisher King by Terry Gilliam with Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl,
Amanda Plummer, amongst others, the first film that took me for an emotional ride on a rollercoaster ... even had me screaming at the screen (in the cinema mind you), No ... No ... it's not fair you cannot do that to him ... and the scene in Grand Central Station is one of the best scenes in a movie I have ever seen.

Then rounding out a Top Twenty it would be:

Brazil.

12 Monkeys.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.

The Fifth Element.

Donnie Darko.

Pi-The Movie.

Requiem For A Dream.

Run Lola Run.

Old Boy.

Le Prix du danger.

Le Samouraď.

Dead Man.

Buena Vista Social Club.

Wings Of Desire.

Night On Earth.

A Bittersweet Life.

Ichi The Killer.

Battle Royale.

Man Bites Dog.

Really they are in  no order apart from the first fim, though a pattern is there as the first three are all Gilliam films as well, just love the way he tells a story ... and as this is long I will not go into details on them, there is always IMDb for anyone interested in any I guess.

Oh my god I'd forgotten about that one. I saw that so many times when I was young. I was always so pissed that he 'escaped' in the end. Well, not in the sense that he escaped the authorities, but he buggered off and left poor Milly all alone!

Hehehe, it's all coming back to me now. I love the scenes at the end. when Milly and Eric, finally go flying off around the neighbourhood, and Milly's little brother runs into Eric's uncle's yard and yells to him about how Milly & Eric are flying around the neighbourhood, and he goes "Yeah right kid, that's nice..", then they both fly past his window and he just has this look on his face like "Wha?" and his ciggie drops out of  his mouth. We laughed so much at that scene, we played it over and over..

Oh, what a blast from the past!!

Yeah,Somebody remembered, old but a real laugh and a little cry when they kiss just before Eric Flies off and she has one  tear that falls onto their lips.Back then,I just loved the flying(I used to pretend I could often) now I think it goes down as one of the most intimate and loving kisses ever  on the screen. Eric had to leave, they would have put him in a military zoo.Glad it brought back a few choice memories ,wonder if any body else will remember. LETS BRING BACK LOVE,LIKE ERIC and MILLY and BUFFY and ANGEL.

'The Boy who could Fly' was one of my daughter's (now Twenty eight) favourite movies. Myself and my two offspring have always loved 'The Lost Boys' and own the DVD. I could no more pick a 'favourite' movie than eat a cactus.

Drunken Master 2. Arguably the best action movie ever made.

EEEK hard question! !  I'm an avid movie fan and have soooooo many favourites.  I probably am an avid old Hollywood Classics fan.   Just love the old black and whites one of my favourites being "Madame X" with Lana Turner.  It was so sad.  OK I can give my Top 10 which again is going to be hugely difficult.  My problem will be if I ever have a fire in my home is trying to grab as many of my vast collection of DVD's as I can!

10.  The Cowboys - John Wayne
9.    Gone With the Wind
8.    Harvey - Jimmy Stewart
7.    The Breakfast Club
6.    Anything with Orson Wells
5.    Dirty Dancing
4.    Ghost
3.    Arsenic & Old Lace - Carey Grant
2.    To Kill a Mocking Bird - Gregory Peck
1.    Madame X - Lana Turner

There are thousands more but these are all ones I have watched again only recently because they are my favourites.

Yesterday while on the stairs, I saw a Man who wasn't there.  He wasn't there again today...I wish that He would go away!!

I like the Scary Movie Series, I don't care what anybody says... Those movies are hillarious!

But I do like Resident Evil (Not as much as the games, but their good), and even Silent Hill was good.

Welcome nisha lee! I too love Ice Age 2 which I recently watched. I like my scares to be really scary though and the Grudge didn't do it for me.

Monty Python's 'The life of Brian.'

It's one movie I watch repeatedly and enjoy it every time. It took me about ten viewings to realise it is Spike Milligan who holds up the shoe after the crowd has run away. I see something new each time i watch it.

Banana - I love Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory too.  I actually don't like chocolate but love the movie.  I love your signature too.

The Prestige, Equilibrium and Hero are favourites too.

We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.

I really love Lunar Girl. It's a sweet little gem.   If anyone's seen Jeopardy (The ABC teen show with a group of scotland kids getting lost in the outback due to aliens!) they'll recognize Charli Wilson. She's so sweet and adorable in this movie.

Fran: I love the outfit, Miss Babcock.
C.C.: Of course, it's an Aldolfo.
Niles: Hitler?

My favourite movies are Pulp Fiction and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I loved the Dark Knight too (because of Heath's performance, he was superb)

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (for Comedy).  Best John Candy movie and Steve martin is actually Funny tied with Princess Bride (almost dead).

Blade Runner for serious moment (just need to save up now for the Blu-Ray extra special never to be repeated until next year version).
