Hi guys,

Would like to hear some contructive feedback regarding the design of the eBlah! Discussion Network.

Specifically, could you tell us your thoughts on:

1. Is the grey background too well... grey, do you prefer crisp white backgrounds on your discussion pages, or alternatively some wacky neon colour  

2. Is the regular type in the posts too small?

3. Are you a fan of Smilies? Should we have more or less?

Thanks guys - any feedback on these specific questions would be appreciated, and feel free to shout at me if you don't like something else here.

Hey devman, its pretty good as it is........main thing, it opens pretty fast.........I belong to a forum in the UK, its pretty good and I have been a member for 2 years.........but one bad point, it takes so long to unload every page.........even on broadband.....

Speed was an important issue in setting up the new eBlah!. Nothing worse than waiting around for a long discussion page to open - I know just what you go through!

The grey is OK'ish .... well ok it IS a bit dull. Personally I like Blue - I think because it highlights rather than blends in with so much of the white on the screen

& getting picky now... but the type in the Message section (here) and especially in the 'Thread Summary" is a wee bit small .... pffft maybe I need reading glasses tho!!

I actually agree with you regarding both points - I think there is a wee bit too much grey. Also, I think in some areas the type is a wee bit small for reading.

Don't worry, I'm putting all these suggestions into a priority file - expect to see them implemented soon!

The grey is easier on the eyes than stark white, but a series of very pale other colours would work just as well. The blue in the thread header, for example, is fine too.

Appreciate the simplicity of it all too. The lack of bells and whistles (including humungous graphics and other associated whizzbangery) means it's a fast load.

I don't mind the text size so much, but that's owing to my own pc settings rather than the board settings, I imagine.  

I agree with the present colour scheme.  But you could include a heaver and/or different coloured line to more easily distinguish between posts in the reply screen.

Is there a quick reply feature that, I think, was on the older version of eblah?  If there is I can't find it in my personal preference setup.

BTW, good to see the old eblah resurrected.  Once the word gets around we should see all the old faces back again ...I hope - where are ya all boils and goils.

Some fantastic suggestions there!

1. In regards to the TV forum, we actually structured our previous forum in that fashion, splitting up TV shows into specific categories and then into threads 'by program name'.

Most of the feedback we received from that style of presentation was negative - users much preferred to have everything in one place so that they could easily and quickly scan the discussions.

I personally prefer your way, where it's all neat and tidy. BUT the concensus at the moment is for the current layout. We'll see how it goes in terms of neatness and future feedback!

2. A debate forum could be a great idea. Do you mean we should setup a time and place for such a debate on eBlah!? Some might say that the current news threads are continuous debates that never end   But your suggestion has merrit. Perhaps when the readership builds up, this could be a big draw card.

3. I can see that the 'Say Hi!' forum is going to be popular We'll keep an eye on it.

4. More smilies on the way!

I don't mind the grey, and although I haven't really been on the 'old' forums much, I am a regular forum user and agree with others about loading times- the faster the better!

I would like the font slightly bigger, too... perhaps the same size as in AirPrang's sig? (But maybe I'm just getting old, too!)

Oh, and yes, a good range of Smileys are a must in a forum!

I like the layout as it is now. Readable and user-friendly. Has that distinct feel to other forums.

This site is almost impossible to negotiate. Maybe I'm just stoopid? Can't figure out how to post a thought.

Can I suggest that Guest users don't have access to the private messaging system please.  It made it easy for me to get spam just now.  I haven't seen the rest of the forum to know if it's happened there too, but just to let you know that it's happened in the private message system.  I deleted the message without thinking first that it might be the only place the IP address might be saved, sorry about that.

I'm sure the PM system was just overlooked and wasn't turned off, but also concerning guest posting can I make a suggestion that we disable it altogether and just allow them to read.  The forum wasn't requiring email verification when I signed up so I don't see a worry with people's spam filters and so forth.  I feel that it can be confusing when a guest is participating because I'm taking their word for who they are after a second post when someone else could have come along and decided to play games or another member can abuse the guest posting feature in topics that are emotionally charged.

These are probably huge asks, but I almost forgot.  The first I suggested in another thread.
The buttons that add bb code to text when it is highlighted, they do not work in Firefox.  Can you take a look on site of whoever makes the forum and see if there is a crossbrowser add on for this.  The smileys don't work perfectly in either but well enough.
The second thing is if there is something that can be added similar to what vbulletin where unread posts are marked with an additional graphic indicator.  It makes finding where I left off much easier.

I like the design.   Seems pretty simple to me and that's the best way to do it in my opinion.

My only suggestions at the moment are to make the Post and Preview buttons actual buttons or perhaps just a differant shade of the surrounding colour, if not differant colour, with bolded text saying "Post" and "Preview".  The other one would be bigger graphic links for everyting like "reply" "new thread" "mark as read" "quote" "report" and all that sort of stuff.  I almost forgot one last thing that would make it better for me is differant graphics for the forums and posts read and unread, specifically changing the unread things to something larger if possible.  Making new and uread forums distictivly differant from the unread ones has always been a plus for me.

You should throw some custum made stars up by your name too.  The ones you have now are good but ordinary and used often.  Be good to yourself : )

MeanDean: Your suggestions sound good and reasonable and I will add them to the to-do list asap. I will also ask around for some new stars - perhaps I need a makeover already??

There is no limit on the frequency or time for editing (modifying) ones post.

I can change a post any time, even weeks later, and then claim that "I never said this" or "said that."

Putting a time and/or frequency limit on editing posts will save a lot of future arguments.

I agree with Cactus - and if not a time limit, at least a line indicating that the post has been edited ('modified), with a time/date stamp on the edit.

ETA: just tested to make sure, and there's no way of telling this post has now been edited twice.

I have already written this one down on my 'to-do' list, but needed to get it checked out from a technical point of view first before responding to ya's all. Apologies for my lateness, give me a good spankin.  

I kind of like the idea of having no time limit placed on editing a post. I have often found myself wanting to edit something I had said (probably in a state of drunkeness - joke!) that now sounds totally inappropriate. So I think we'll keep it open ended timewise.

However, a time stamp is absolutely something I want to put into place, so hold your hats boys and girls.

Is anyone seeing broken images lately? Specifically, any of the eBlah! logo's, buttons, icons etc??? I'm not too sure whether it's the computer I am on at the moment, but there seems to be random graphics not appearing here and there..

I did yesterday but assumed that it was a problem on my end.  Also during that time, and in addition to the board images, it happened with the pictures of the women in the Australian Princess subforum under TV Specials.  I was opening a lot of tabs at once with the Australian Princess thing but most loaded except for four, then I stopped them all and redid them one at a time but still had the problem.  They did load after a number of trys and the board images I think also loaded on a refresh or two but I don't remember specifically

Try clearing the cache and see if avatars are still loading.

Um ... I just realised I could clear my own damn cache.  Okay For the most part things are loading but the graphics are very slow and one avatar that is being hosted here didn't load at all.  

Edit: Should add that it was an avatar someone uploaded here and not one from an avatar pack.

Some great feedback/headsup coming in. Thank you so much for this, terrifically valuable for me and our developers.

I will put the following on the table:

a) I was unaware that guests have access to private messaging. As stated, this is a huge security hole to the detriment of our members, opening up everyone to spammers and the like. Will give this one top priority this week. In the meantime, if anyone experiences specific spamming, can you please reply or msg me directly, and I'll sort it out for you.
b) As far as I am aware, guests cannot post or reply to posts. Can you tell me where you have seen this happen? I know there are specific priveledges assigned to each section of eBlah!, so I will double check this one.
c) Simpson - 1. no.    2. Will do.

I haven't seen any guests post in the forums.  It was just the private message.  I thought the setting for guest posting might have been missed all the way around and mentioned the rest of the board for that reason.

Edit: Much appreciated and applauded on attempting to get a workable button and (hopefully) smiley placement system up... for non IE browsers I mean.

On multiple acconts, would it be too much to ask that people don't do it except when administration doesn't care?  and no, I don't know how that would be worded in the sign up.  I'm not meaning something so strict that it would discourage people from participating in a way that benefits the site as a whole, which is of course the whole purpose in having a forum, but just something that would prevent people, and for example, signing up and taking part in a debate about How much Tea There Is In China, having their say in a positive way and then having their alter ego insult Chinese people just to get a reaction so they log in a day later and have something to read that they think is funny but have meanwhile pissed off a lot of other people.
I think we could all care less if the forum gets big enough that people in industries involving television use this place as somewhere to leak things or bash each other while Ebroadcast gets a more ads served and I could care less if people had permission for multiple accounts.  It's those who don't take Tea seriously and think that it's fun to troll or to just plain insult the intelligence of others by doing it at all that I'm talking about.

Can we at least have, "Yeah it can be a problem but it can be sometimes almost impossible to catch these people so don't expect feedback about it when it's reported and just trust that it will be looked into (perhaps even periodically)."

I couldn't find the silver guys, I went looking but the directory is huge.  I know of these from a um.. a friend saved these and stuck them on imageshack.

Maybe they can replace the redundant MSN smileys and any of these that look unimportant   on this page.  They might make some blue guys redundant but others might like the blue guys.

I wonder if the inactive tabs of people like me who have every new thread open show up as guests.

You’ll find on Tasman’s chart that the Clicks, Threads, Replies and New Members is still un-remarkable despite the huge spike in Most Online.

The increase in "visitors" has been amazing.

I got the TV Guide guys to place the top TV posts on the front page of the TV Guide (http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/tv) and within minutes there were around 200 guests active in the TV forum (it was around 5pm, nearing peak hour for the TV Guide). The TV Guide gets thousands of users at any one minute so its good traffic. The trick is to convert these lurkers to full-time members!!

We'll get there!  

Cool, that makes sense. Hopefully a few of them will be signing up and talking to us.

The bit I don't get is why on the main board it says they're all browsing in TV, but on the Active Users tab, it says they're all viewing News.

You're a very observant eBlah'er!  

They are indeed bots, used by various search engines (the ones you see are from Google and MSN Search) to scan webpages. For some reason, they are also coming up as 'members', meaning they are some how self-registering! Yes, it is a concern, as next they'll be taking over the world. So, I will forwarding this one to the higher beings here at eBroadcast!

Well it worked for me...I didn't know y'all exhisted a week ago..I use the TV guide page all the time...saw the discussion thingo a few days ago and registered the next day

I like the forum design...colour is fine (I accept the whole world cannot be purple)

font is fine

A few more smiles would be nice but it can go a bit mad in some places...although a sleepy one would be nice....

I think the cookie clearing might be your problem polaris.  eBlah needs those cookies to keep you logged on.  When you delete those cookies you are no longer logged on and that could be why you are being "booted off".

When you go into internet options just "Delete Files" not Cookies.

Alot of work was done on various parts of our network last night, between about 11pm and 2am, to minimise disruption. This included modification to the server time and other areas, which would have caused some buggy moments. As it was non-planned work, I could not pass on any warning before hand, so big sorries for this.

Yeah if you read the posts fully, it has actually updated.

See what's happened is, because the server clock was modified by development staff overnight, there's some screwey date stamps on some of the posts, and the 'latest posts' log has got mixed results, but it does have the latest posts stuck in there somewhere (I noticed one from Rockchick a few minutes ago..).

I think if we ride this one out during the next 24 hours, it *should* rectify itself. Gonna be a bumpy weekend me thinks   sorry guys.

WOW!. .that was one huge bump . .came over the top and landed as  Gizmo. . (magic).  . .now I am a baby member again.

I think I missled you/me. I meant 'refresh' .   . . and that problem was only an issue last night. . not had it before.  

We need a place where members can get help with board problems. . or at least mention them.
We may be able to help each other with problems. . but at least a Mod could find all the issues in one area. . not in several different posts.

I am seeing the clock/date showing 1/11/05 7.01 . . not sure if it is am/pm. but the real time is SA 9.05pm.  . .and I set it on Adelaide/Darwin time in tools.

When it's set Darwin/SA time in tools with the daylight saving checked it shows it as November 1st, 2005, 08:20, and it's 9.20 pm Oct. 31.  The closest I get is if I leave it at GMT, but it's still 30 minutes off !

I too have changed my clock just now to darwin/adelaide time and now its 2 hours off! Whats going on?!

The clock on this system seems kookier than my internal clock at the moment (I'm going to bed FAR to late this week, and waking up dazed!).

Will look into this one for you. It's a tricky one. Might have to setup a new clock system and get everyone to adjust manually - hopefully not.

Is anyone else having trouble with eBlah being very slow and even "hanging" over the last week or so?  Half the time I just give up and go do something else.

A message forum about TV advertisements is certainly a good discussion topic, but I think it would be more suitable to simply create a new post about it, and let other users contribute to it. Simply go to the TV discussion area and post a new thread there.

Yes, that is a great idea. Sometimes I'll notice i've missed a bracket or have it the wrongway round and end up with a [b[dumb message like this[/b]. 60 seconds is plenty of time to realise my mistake and go back and fix it

I don't like it but how often do I see it? Not often enough to worry about it. It's trick photography I know and the tongue is yucky but it doesn't affect my life.

When I first saw it the webpage was “minimised” and the image partly obscured and for an instant I thought it was a certain male appendage.  After “maximising” the page it became clear but for a moment there I was taken aback.

No you're right, there isn't any such thing.

My first experience wasn't bad but my second experience when I was on a veranda of a high set house where I thought I was at ground level really frightened me.  That was the last time I took acid.  Even then, I still had "flash backs" for a couple of years - mostly as pedestrians crossing the road while I was driving.  On several occasions I stopped to allow the “shadow” to cross the road.

Looks like you can create a list of people that you can select to private message more easily if they are a buddy.  There's also a block user setting in there and they share the window I found the settings in.  The settings are really obscure so I can't help you with how to use it.

Deoderant is not natural.  Body odor is natural and will attract members of the opposite sex (from France anyway) and flies.  My suggestion is to avoid the flies and use flirting for the other part.

Hi sushi. . .  that was funny to see the mistake. . but most messageboards don't encourage such obscure titles to threads. .  . 'umm' . .and such like is not a good way
to title your topic . . if it becomes popular . . it looks like you did not care enough to post a sucinct name for it.
Huge photos spoil the way the board moves . . . control buttons disappear to the far right . . and members don't bother to post if they have to search for the 'reply' button.

That is why moderators do what they do.  Keeps the board running smoothly.  . .keep your eye out for more funny mistakes though .. they are always fun to see.
