Welcome to John Howard's Australia. Incidents like this reaffirm to me that no-one gves a crap about anyone else anymore. People are only worried about themselves.

After all it's what the federal government (and the Hillsong Church) tell us we should be doing, we should ONLY worry about ourselves and our families. If you ask me that's "un-Australian".

The whole Tasmanian miners saga was a very nice and timely display of community spirit, a reminder of the community that we ALL as Australians belong to, it was good to see the nation getting behind them like we used to. And not one Liberal politician in site.

We need to go back to our old values of actually giving a damn about our neighbour, this Govt. has done so much damage to our culture and who we are that it's going to take years to recover from.

I have seen this kind of issue from both perspectives. .

As a victim of crime I know how hard it is to get witnesses to come forward due to their fears of 'the sysetm'. They are right to be fearful of the police and court system too . . it is horrible and mostly ineffective.  When many come forward to help . . the crim is more likely to walk free as there are more chances of mistakes during trial. (seen that first hand).

Also . .it is very easy to get involved to help in an apparent 'domestic' and end up in a fight yourself!. . I once called out to a man to stop punching a woman he was fighting with in a shopping center car park  . . and SHE told me to 'F" off!. .

People are confused by many things these days and if they are confident they can help . . they will . . but not everyone is sure of what is happening when they see stuff in public places .  . . and some have even become victims themselves by helping a so called 'victim'.

Further to the story on the disappearance of Juan Zhang from her workplace after closing up for the night with a substancial amount of money from the days takings. No-one responded to her blood curdling screams or rang the police. It was 12 hours or more later that the Police officially began looking for her after her fiance and friends reported her missing. Her broken glasses, blood and hair were found in the doorway of her place of work. The saddest thing is that Juan Zhang was most likely already dead when reported missing the next day. She was found dead in the boot of her own car Five days after she went missing. A 24yr old man has been charged with her  murder and with car theft. Harking back to the fact that no-one responded to this woman's 'blood curdling screams' in any way, shape or form it has been named as an effect.
Wikepedia says:
The bystander effect (also known as bystander apathy) is a psychological phenomenon where persons are less likely to intervene in an emergency situation when others are present than when they are alone. The antonym of the term is civil courage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

If you are interested in the effect/apathy then read the full article at the address above. The case of Kitty Genovese is both disturbing and horrific.

And so there should not have been.  It had nothing to do with politics and I for one am glad that none were there trying to score brownie points.

Toddler 'was put in clothes dryer'
30-05-2006
From: AAP

A 13-month-old Perth girl suffered serious burns when she was put in a clothes dryer, police said today.

The baby was left with the boyfriend of her mother at suburban Warwick when the woman went to the gym for about an hour last Thursday, police said.
The baby spilt liquid on herself and the man put her in the clothes dryer and turned it on.

The girl suffered serious burns to her feet and hands and bruising to the face, arms and back.

"We received information from Princess Margaret Hospital's child protection unit, which said the injuries were suspicious and highly unusual," a police spokesman said.

A 21-year-old man from suburban Beldon was expected to appear in Perth Magistrates' Court later today, charged with causing bodily harm or danger.

I have just seen on the TV News. The Mother looks like she is under 20 years old. I am not saying this to imply she is not a good Mother but because of her lack of experience she may have trusted someone who was so immature and reckless that her baby is lucky to be alive. I really hope that the baby's welfare is put first in this case and she (the baby) is placed in safe hands until the Mother realises the priorities she has to have and the choices she has to make.

Not to bag all young mums out there, but you gotta wonder, if they wern't responsible enough to keep their legs together or use some sort of protection, they couldn't be responsible enough to care for a completly helpless, tiny, fragile human being that requires attention 24/7...

I covered a horrific story a couple of years ago about a young woman who was brutally raped on a bus. The bus had a total of 12 passengers on board. No one did a thing. They were too afraid. It was actually a ground breaking case as the bus had CCTV and all 12 witnesses were charged as 'accessories' to the assualt.

So if your moral instinct won't encourage you to stand up to your fear and help another human being in trouble, just remember that the courts recognise ignorance as a crime.

Body of 8yo girl in toilet

AN eight-year-old girl found dead in a shopping centre toilet in suburban Perth is believed to have been murdered, police say.

The girl's body was found by a family member in a toilet at Livingston Marketplace in Canning Vale, in Perth's south-east, about 4.10pm (WST), apparently after she had been missing.
Police spokesman Sergeant Graham Clifford said the major crime squad was investigating the girl's death.

They were treating it as a murder investigation.

Sgt Clifford said the toilet was in a well-used area of the shopping centre, near the entrance to the Big W store.

He had no information on injuries suffered by the girl, on apparent cause of death, or on how long the girl had been missing before her body was found in the toilet.

imagine the pain and shock that the family member must of had

Princes lash out over Diana death photos
Saturday Jul 15 05:48 AEST

Britain's princes William and Harry have lashed out at an Italian magazine that published taboo photographs of their mother, Princess Diana, dying in the wreckage of a Paris car crash.
"We feel deeply saddened that such a low has been reached," the two princes said in a rare statement.
"Despite the support shown to us and our mother's memory by so many people over the last eight years, we feel that, as her sons, we would be failing in our duty to her now if we did not protect her, as she once did us.
"Therefore, we appeal to all forms of media throughout the world to appreciate fully that publishing such material causes great hurt to us, our father, our mother's family and all those who so loved and respected her."
Milan-based magazine Chi defended its decision to run the photo, which showed Diana slumped and dying in the mangled Mercedes moments after it slammed into a tunnel at high speed, killing her, her lover and their driver.
A spokesman for the magazine said: "There is nothing voyeuristic or disrespectful in all this. It is just an attempt to get closer to the truth of a drama that is still wrapped in too much mystery and too many lies."
British tabloids, which once revelled in covering every twist in Diana's tortured lovelife, had refrained from publishing pictures of her death, maintaining that taboo throughout the nearly nine years since the crash.
They united in condemning Chi.
"Shame On You" thundered The Sun, Britain's best-selling daily newspaper, which reprinted the photo in Chi but blanked out the image of Diana. "Outrage at Picture of Dying Diana in Magazine," declared the Daily Express.
The fury of the tabloids was ironic to some.

Whether it is Princess Diana or Joe Blow who lived in the Park. It is indecent and irresponsible to take photos of the dead/dying let alone publish them. Disgusting! Shame, shame, shame!

Investigation launched into boy's death
Friday Aug 4 08:32 AEST

An investigation has been launched into the death of a one-year-old boy who was brought to the attention of DOCS three months before he died.

Police are examining the death of Robbie Dean Gillett whose body was discovered in his family home in the western Sydney suburb of Claymore on Monday.

The Daily Telegraph reports DOCS had been alerted to the boy's troubled family environment three months ago but failed to assign him a case worker.

This was despite Robbie's circumstances being classified in the top-priority "level one category" and with his family already being known to DOCS staff.

The cause of the boy's death has not been revealed.

"Macquarie Fields police are preparing a report for the coroner concerning the death of a 12-month-old boy at Claymore on July 31," a police spokeswoman said.

"Police are now awaiting the results of a post mortem examination."

A DOCS spokeswoman said the case was being investigation but would not comment, fearing it could "jeopardise the investigation".
