The Nine Network has announced production of a sixth series of Water Rats, the police action drama.

Water Rats, which stars Steve Bisley and Dee Smart, has been a top fixture in the ratings since its premiere in February 1996.

The series will continue with its celebrity guest roles including former Neighbour Brooke Satchwell, rising star Matthew Newton and Olympic swimmer Grant Hackett.

Production is due to commence shortly.
