Last week the Melbourne Herald Sun (21/10) reported on the
Australian Broadcasting Authority's annual report. The report found a 71%
increase in complaints about offensive scenes on TV and radio in the past
year. It claimed that commercial TV stations committed 38 breaches of their
own code of practice and shows like Sex/Life, Pacific Drive
and Full Frontal were targeted for criticism. The A.B.A.
noted a "trend against compliance" by the licensees (the channels).
So will TV stations take notice of the industry watchdog's report and clean
up their act? Don't bet on it!
On The Panel (21/10), Kate Langbroek wore a cheeky
scratch and sniff t-shirt and invited fellow Panel member,
Rob Sitch to "Smell my #@%%ies". He obliged, and everyone
wise-cracked about it for the rest of the show. As The Panel
is rated M for language and adult themes, viewers shouldn't have been
surprised or offended by this.
But...Channel 10 then decided to use this very footage in one of their promos for
The Panel and screened it during the Saturday morning edition
of Video Hits (24/10). A quick survey of TV guides revealed
that this music video show, aimed at young teens, doesn't appeared to be
classified. Very strange as the Sunday edition of the same show is rated G.
One would assume that the Saturday edition, sandwiched in between two C
classified children's shows would be the same.
So did Channel 10 slip up by airing a promo of an M rated show in this
timeslot?
