| 'We just work here'
|
Okay, is it just us or has the quality of our favorite show slipped? Please, before we get into this, we'd like to make it known that South Park and The Simpsons have and always will have a special place in our hearts so if you've just started the email to us beginning "Hey Dumb-Asses," drop it.
In its third season opener (April 7th), South Park pulled 3.4 million viewers which is exactly half the viewers the show drew on last year's season premiere. Weird. Where did they go? What are they watching? If you are a recovering South Park fanatic, please enlighten us, tell us your story. Tell us what happened. We're here for you.
"Keeping a franchise alive over a long period of time is always a challenge," said Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox. "I think it's premature to say that the show has peaked and I don't agree with that," Fox said. "We have a South Park movie coming out in June and that should help to energize the show."
Theory One
The show got too hip too fast. Remember when the Simpsons first came out 11 years ago? It was far from an overnight success. It took several seasons to garner a solid fan base that would warrant the production of Bart Simpson t-shirts. South Park t-shirts were floating around Hollywood before the show was even picked up. It's possible that the old maxim 'Bright stars burn but briefly' is accurate in this case.
Theory Two
Rest much? It's also possible that the Matt and Trey are just getting lazy. They bill themselves as the quintessential slackers so their laziness shouldn't come as a surprise.
Theory Three
Nothing's Shocking. With show's like Upright Citizen's Brigade, The Tom Green Show and The Norm Show, South Park's shock value isn't shocking anymore. In Park's latest installment, the kids are looking for "an erection" for Kyle's mom because his dad "can't get one" himself. Fair enough, that's pretty funny stuff but not as funny as it was last year at this time.
We're not giving up on the show however. Kenny, Kyle, Stan and Eric are like twisted little brothers to us now and it would be a crime to turn our backs on them.
If you have any theories on the show, whether they're on its potential demise, on its recent rating's dip or why we can't seem to keep our pants on during the show, send 'em our way.
