Revealed - Globe presenters get a Golden surpriseThursday 20 January 2000 By eBroadcast Staff and agencies.
Now you'd think that Gwyneth Paltrow, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas and the like could afford whatever tchotchkes they wanted, and wouldn't be getting all worked up over a gift basket. Apparently you'd be thinking wrong. USA Today reports that Golden Globe presenters traditionally get all atwitter over their GG keepsake gift boxes, presented to them during rehearsals. "It's amazing," GG chairman Scott Orlin told USA Today. "Without naming names, they're like little kids. You would think these people who make many millions could easily go out and get this stuff. But I think people just enjoy being appreciated."
Here's how the likes of scheduled presenters Paltrow, Spielberg, Ford, Douglas, Minnie Driver, Julia Roberts, Angela Bassett, etc. will be appreciated:
The $500 red fabric boxes include "a $3,500 Christian Dior watch, a $700 Fuji digital camera, a $500 PalmPilot, $500 Motorola walkie-talkies, a $300 Bottega Veneta daybook, $200 Kenneth Cole and Banana Republic gift certificates, and such assorted goodies as an Elton John candle, Godiva chocolates, sunglasses and CDs." No wonder those presenters look so cheerful.
The Globes unfurl on Monday 24th January on the Ten Network and will feature a special tribute to superstar Barbra Streisand. A full list of nominees can be found here.
