Rachel Griffiths goes for GoldFriday 20 December 2002 By eBroadcast Staff and agencies.
Two Aussies woke up bright and early at 5 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 19) morning to hear the Golden Globe nominations and many weren't disappointed.
Rachel Griffiths and Nicole Kidman were glad they got up.
Both scored nominations for lead actress in a TV series (Griffiths in "Six Feet Under") and Motion Picture (Kidman in "The Hours").
Not surprisingly, American cable channel HBO led the TV networks, garnering over 20 nominations. In addition to its power hitting series "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under" and "Sex and the City," its original movies "Path to War," "The Gathering Storm," "Live from Baghdad" and "Hysterical Blindness" all had a strong showing as well.
While most of the honors went to the usual suspects, a couple of freshman shows were given the nod. "Life with Bonnie's" Bonnie Hunt was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, and "Monk's" Tony Shalhoub was likewise honored for Best Actor in a Drama Series.
The Sci Fi Channel original "Steven Spielberg Presents Taken," which ended its 20-hour run on Friday, was also singled out for the Best Original Movie or Miniseries category.
NBC's "Scrubs" continues to be snubbed, but "Will & Grace" and all four members of its ensemble cast were not. Meanwhile, "Sex and the City's" Kristin Davis was the only actress from the hit HBO series to not be nominated.
Finally, FOX's animated series "The Simpsons" raised a couple of eyebrows by being nominated for Best Comedy Series.
In movies, "Chicago" led with eight nominations, followed by Kidman's "The Hours" with 7 nominations
