Olympic Torch Arrives In AustraliaMonday 5 June 2000 By eBroadcast Staff and agencies.
To celebrate the Australian arrival of the Olympic Torch, ‘Today’ will present a special three-hour edition live from Uluru on Thursday June 8 from 7.00am to 10.00am.
On its arrival at Uluru, the torch will be handed to Nova Peris-Kneebone, who will be the first person to carry the torch in Australia. Peris-Kneebone was the first Aboriginal Olympic gold medal winner with the Australian women’s hockey team in Atlanta. Since then, she has successfully swapped her hockey stick for sprinting, winning gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
This is the first time the Olympic Torch has reached Australia since 1956.
