Lisa McCune may be the most popular personality on Australian
television according to the readers of TV Week, but not so with the readers of Melbourne's Herald Sun.
In a recent phone poll, the daily newspaper asked "Should Lisa McCune have been awarded the Gold Logie?". 743 people responded to the poll, with 40.7% (303 callers) voting YES and 59.3% (440 callers) voting NO.
Judging by newspaper reviews, letters to the editor, radio talkback and internet news groups, the most common Logies gripes were about the performances of Daryl Somers and Matt LeBlanc. The length of the program also irritated many viewers. One person to stick his neck out and defend the show was Eddie McGuire (from The Footy Show - AFL) in his Herald Sun column (25/4).
Despite criticism of the event, the 40th Annual TV Week Logie
Awards gained an impressive rating of 36.
Channel 7 have jumped on the Logie bandwagon, and have been advertising their re-runs of Frontline by referring to its recent Logie wins. Never-mind that Channel 7 are currently showing the first series of Frontline (with Bruno Lawrence), which didn't win the recent Logies; and never-mind that the recently won Logies were actually won for the last series (starring Steve Bisley) which appeared on the ABC last year. A Logie is a Logie is a Logie.
A photo of Miss Benita (from Play School) in her see-through red dress has already made its way on to the internet. (No, I won't give you the URL. Find it yourself if you must).
A recent television ad for TV Week's special Logie edition featured the shot of Kerri-Anne Kennerley with another celebrity making a rude gesture behind her back. For full details on this story read Logies Mysteries Solved in the archive.
Finally, the event made the cover of another national magazine this week. Unfortunately, the article in The Bulletin suggested that behind the glossy veneer there is deep dissatisfaction with the awards.
