Logies organisers gambled on the appeal of four overseas names this
year, and scored a major coup when Matt LeBlanc accepted the
invitation to attend. But were these American stars worth all the hype?
Kathy Najimy from Veronica's Closet was chatty and
funny and didn't need to be spoon-fed lines by Daryl Somers. She was
actually one of the most entertaining guest presenters in a long time, and
the Logies crowd appreciated her efforts.
Kenny Rogers and Reba McEntire also seemed to get into the
spirit of things, and added a touch of class to the evening when they sang
Don't Fall in Love With A Dreamer. It was a professional, smooth
performance and they certainly earned their airfares.
On the other hand, there was Matt LeBlanc, the much-hyped
heart-throb, and star of Friends and the new Lost in
Space movie. As one of the hottest stars in the business, his
appearance should have been a highlight, but he seemed disinterested and
Daryl struggled to elicit anecdotes from the surly star. LeBlanc's answers were brief and bordered on rudeness.
Dazza started to babble (not a good sign) and the conversation hit rock bottom when he asked LeBlanc about his pet dogs. It was Cringe TV, and even LeBlanc's attempt to salvage the situation by telling the Logies crowd "You guys rock", brought a sour look to the face of at least one starlet.
When Catherine McClements, from Water Rats, went
onstage to collect her award for Most Outstanding Actress, the first words
she blurted into the microphone were "Well I won't talk about my dogs
that's for sure. Let's keep the evening short."
Celebs were miffed because the banal banter between Somers and
LeBlanc had been allowed to drag on, when recipients had been told
to keep their acceptance speeches short.
Believe it or not, it could have been worse. On The Midday
Show, the following day, Somers told Kerri-Anne
Kennerley that one of the topics he considered chatting to the sex
symbol about was LeBlanc's interest in......carpentry.
