Jim Carrey And Irene Under AttackTuesday 20 June 2000 By eBroadcast Staff and agencies.
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) has launched a national protest on Jim Carrey’s new film, Me, Myself & Irene, calling it an “ignorant” and “insensitive” portrayal of people with mental illness.
NAMI’s deputy executive director, Bill Emmet believes the movie “reinforces existing stereotypes and perpetuates the myth that schizophrenia is the same as split-personality disorder”.
The movie, which also stars Carrey’s real-life partner Renee Zellweger, comes from the twisted minds of the Farrelly Brothers, the directing duo behind There’s Something About Mary and Dumb & Dumber.
