Actress Winona Ryder shoplifted in a Beverly Hills store to prepare for a movie role, according to a security official who testified in court this week.

Ken Evans surprised the defence with his claim. "She was seated and she immediately stood up and took my hand" he said.

"She said, 'I'm sorry for what I did. My director directed me to shoplift for a role which I was preparing".

Prosecuters allege the actress stole items worth over $5500. Ryder, 30, faces up to three years in prison if convicted of felony grand theft, vandalism and burglary.
