Producers originally envisioned Monica doing the nasty with Joey
instead of Chandler

It is probably difficult to imagine now—Monica and Joey making animal love—and we’re certainly glad it didn’t happen.
Although Joey’s lack of wit, common sense, and overall intelligence (he’s like an
Italian Forrest Gump) is often very entertaining, he is, for the most part, pretty disgusting.
Not that Chandler is much better. He’s a whiny wussy-boy trapped in Doogie
Howser’s body. But, unlike Joey, Chandler seems to be functioning on more
than a brain stem. Therefore, if we had to choose which one would get to
violate Monica’s perfect bod, we would have to go with the guy who could
count to ten without using his fingers.
David Crane, one of the creators of the show, explained why we were spared of this
Monica/Joey story in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview. "This was before we
cast the show," reflected Crane. The envisioned romance was supposed to eventually
play off Ross and Rachel. The producers then decided that Monica and Chandler would
make a more interesting pair. "We didn't do anything to lead up to it," he said. "We thought it could be one episode or three, but they have so many problems built into their
characters that it's yielded a ton of wonderful stories."
Of course, we would consider any story where Courtney Cox wears a tight shirt wonderful
but we’ll pretend it’s because of Monica and Chandler’s "chemistry."
