David E. Kelley, producer of Ally McBeal, The Practice, Chicago Hope, and the new Snoops, has signed an uprecedented deal with the Fox network in the States to develop four series in the next five years.
What's unprecedented is the cash Kelley's getting: US$50 million up front, plus numerous rewards and incentives for things like ratings performance, ad revenue, and syndication sales.
Not only that, but the deal is retroactive to Kelly's Emmy winners Ally McBeal and The Practice, so he will get a piece of those shows' sure-to-be-huge syndication revenues.
This deal will give Fox exclusive rights to all of Kelley's creations, and will hopefully allow Fox to put aging warhorses Beverly Hills, 90210, The X-Files, and Party of Five out of their misery.
