What’s up with female celebrities posing nude while they’re pregnant? Is it their way of saying, "In your face - look how skinny I am when every other pregnant woman
is bloated, has gained 200 pounds, and is carrying their breasts around in duffel bags." Or, is it more of a way to show that pregnancy can be beautiful?
Some of Crawford’s comments during an interview in the upcoming June issue of W magazine seem to support the first theory. "I don't feel disgusting or unsexy," Crawford said of her pregnancy. "I don't want this to sound bad, but for some women who may not
be comfortable with their bodies, pregnancy can be an excuse to be Earth Mother. For the most part, I am comfortable with my body, and I work hard at keeping it."
Which brings us to the second possibility. Discovering beauty.
Back in 1991, Demi Moore sparked controversy when she appeared nude on the cover of Vanity Fair while pregnant. According to Dr. Shari Thurer, author of Myths of Motherhood, because of that groundbreaking cover we now see pregnancy is a different light. "I think the idea of a maternal woman being erotic was very threatening and disturbing, especially to men," she said. "These days, women are freer to be themselves, to experience and display a fuller range of feelings."
(Obviously Dr. Thurer doesn't surf the porn sites where there exist many sections devoted to pregnant woman, or so we're told.)
Of course, one could even go so far as to argue that Crawford had very little to do with the idea, at least initially (explaining why one of the world’s top models would strike such a tired pose). W editor Patrick McCarthy said the magazine originally planned for the supermodel to pose in evening gowns to show off "the utter chicness of being pregnant." But, apparently
at the time of the photo shoot, the just didn't look pregnant enough in the outfits.
That’s when photographer Michael Thompson and a fashion editor asked her to pose clothes-free. Crawford agreed.

And the rest is saucy fashion mag history, baby.
Our guess is showing off her hot pregnant bod in an evening gown wasn’t enough for
Crawford, and she refused to be outdone by some cheesy movie actress. That, or she just wanted to get naked.
Either way, mission accomplished. Bravo Cindy.
