Channel Nine newsreader Brian Naylor, 68, last night announced to work collegues that he will no longer present Melbourne's top-rating news in 1999.
Naylor, whose nightly catchphrase was "May your news be good news and goodnight", will be replaced by deputy news anchor Peter Hitchener.
Over the last month Channel Nine executives have been trying to secure Naylor for another year. "I tried everything in my power to convince Brian to stay, but when he said his mind was definetly up, I understood and accepted it totally," Nine Melbourne boss Ian Johnson said. "I respect his decision".
