For all of you who have been hibernating and have missed the rampaging
publicity train of the Seven Network, one of the major mini-series from the
recently ended US season will air on Sunday and Monday night on Seven. Of
course I’m talking about “Asteroid.” The special effects are worth viewing
- you make up your mind about the rest.
The Nine Network has captured (this equates to paid big bucks) two of the
highest rated mini-series from the recent US season. The first of their
booty to hit our airwaves is “The Odyssey” which will air at 8:30pm on
Sunday the 6th of July (the second part continues on Wednesday, July 9th).
This was one of the major rating winners in the US and stars Armand
Assante, Greta Scacchi, Irene Papas, Vanessa Williams, Geraldine Chapman,
Bernadette Peters, Eric Roberts and Isabella Rossellini.
Do I have to tell you it’s based on Homer’s Odyssey? That’s the Greek
Homer not the Simpson’s Homer.
“The Last Don”, the other major mini-series will be seen on the Nine
Network, too. No time has been announced for its screening.
“Suddenly Susan”
Move over Caroline and make room for Susan. On Monday, July 7th at 8pm
“Suddenly Susan” the hit new comedy starring Brooke Shields premiers on
Channel Nine. This has been a huge ratings success in the US, finishing
the 1996-1997 television season with an overall ranking of the 4th top
prime time program, with an average 24.6 million viewers each week.
The show focuses on Susan (Shields), a beautiful but somewhat sheltered
magazine writer, who leaves her rich fiancee when she realises when wants
more from life. Unlike her parents, who thinks she’s crazy for giving up
the life of wealth and luxury that would have accompanied her marriage, her
Nana (Barbara Barrie) totally supports her decision and helps ease the
adjustment to her new lifestyle.
At the hip San Francisco magazine “The Gate”, Susan struggles with her new
promotion from copy editor to writer of her own column on being single.
Her boss Jack (Judd Nelson), the brother of her ex-fiancee, decided earned
the promotion after realising that now she was alone, confused, struggling
to make ends meet and facing a world full of potential pain and failure,
she was suddenly interesting to readers.
Also working at the magazine are Vicky (Kathy Griffin), Susan witty
co-worker who introduces her to the single world, Luis (Nestor Carbonell),
the suave photographer who has his eye on Susan, and Todd (David
Strickland), the magazine’s music critic whose fixation with MTV has won
him an extremely limited attention span.
Brooke Shields had the role of Susan developed for her after a critically
acclaimed appearance on “Friends” where she played a beautiful soap opera
fan obsessed with Joey’s “Days of Our Lives” character. This is Brooke’s
first television series, after appearing in a number of movies.
