Network Ten, currently in the middle of a Big Brother ratings frenzy, will continue it’s Event-TV love affair with the launch of Australian Idol in mid-2003.
Australian Idol will be based on the hugely successful American Idol in the US and Pop Idol in the UK.
“Australian Idol will be every bit as effective and all-encompassing (as Big Brother), as Ten will drive consumer interaction with the program on multiple levels.” Says Ten’s John McAlpine.
To be produced by Grundy Television, Australian Idol will feature contestants of all shapes and sizes battling it out for the ultimate prize of a recording contract with BMG. Each week, the viewing public will be able to vote for their favourite singer.
But the essential ingredient of the US and UK versions has been the acid tongue of the judges, particularly that of BMG Record executive Simon Cowell who judged both versions. No word yet if Ten plan to import Cowell, or alternatively use a local version.
